Yeah finland did well but in the end they still lost. Which was rather unsurprising, given the Soviet Union had enough military assets to conquer the entirety of mainland europe including spain had the d-day invasion not taken place. Thankfully d-day happened
Based on the recent performance of Russia's soldiers and the state of their equipment and logistics, Russia would basically be throwing thousands of soldiers to their death if they try Finland in conventional warfare. Finland has a lot of well-trained and highly motivated soldiers backed by modern equipment and other western European countries. Russia cannot afford to open a new war front. They're incredibly bad in contact warfare. If Putin didn't have that nuclear weapon option, this war would have been over a lot sooner.
Russia has a good historical record of sending thousand of young men to their deaths anyway. If you think that they won't do it cus it sounds insane by 2022 standards, you're mistaken. They will keep sending men to die... but eventually they will win. Not being afraid to lose millions of young people, is something that CAN allow someone big with so much manpower like russia, just win. Doesn't mean that it will be a pretty win, it won't.. it will be a humiliation struggle. But they will get the land they want.
@@musicilya6674 This is the only thing left for Russia... trying to scare people of nuclear war so maybe someone will respect them again. Sorry, but it's not working.

I think this video misses the main reason why Russia hasn't invaded Finland and the main philosophy behind Finnish defense. Finland has made the thought of invading it incredibly costly. Finland can mobilize more than half a million trained soldiers from a population of 5,5 million. Every building above a certain size has a bomb shelter. Every bridge is designed with slots that make destroying them with explosives easy. Finland has prepared for an invasion since the second world war and has enough guns to hand every willing person a East-German AK and tell them to camp in the forest. And what would Russia gain from invading Finland? Finland has little natural resources, there are only a few million people and Finland's location is not that strategically useful all things considered. The main philosophy behind Finnish deference is a cost benefit analysis. What would a potential invader gain and what would it cost? The reason behind the move towards NATO is partly fear yes, but also the benefit of remaining neutral is not that great to Finland anymore. During the cold war Finland benefited from being able to trade with both east and west but now that Finland is in the EU Finland has to follow the EU sanctions. It is impossible to sit on the fence anymore.
900k reservists (with guns for everyone as well). If war breaks out, the Army can just take anything and everything (like transport vehicles, buildings, anything you can imagine) under its control if it deems it necessary and the terrain is perfect for guerrilla warfare too. And other (infra etc) benefits which I am not gonna discuss here :)
My sister-in-law is Finnish and she says that her brothers have been getting training the last several weeks. There would be a lot of the population ready to fight.
Russia do not want to invade Finland because Putin wants to dominate Europe, Russia will invade Finland or Sweden if they want take a side, Putin will not let any other Russia's neighbor to be a NATO member anymore (and MAYBE, the most concerning way, they might use nuclear weapons against its neighbors)
As a Finn, I honestly think that the situation is clearer now than ever before. We would no longer need to consider whether our military is capable and large enough to repel a Russian invasion, when we can instead avoid an invasion by joining NATO. It is becoming even more obvious that Russia sees neutrality as weakness and indecisiveness, and has no respect for it.
@@Frozenpizzareviewer Invading Finland would be insane. Russia can't fight a two front war. Also, Finnish entry into NATO would be automatic, because they meet all the requirements and have been conducting joint operations with NATO for years. It's not the same situation as Ukraine at all.

Finland should join a third faction, well if russia and nato dish out finland is on the loosing side, no matter what. unlike Ukraine who are considered brother to russians, finnish are not in the same spot. its easier to kill a stranger than a brother so the backlash on striking finland is much milder than ukraine.
So true. I never felt like NATO was needed, but as I see this attack on Ukraine, now I completely changed my view about Russia and now I feel NATO is the best option.

But Sweden has betrayed its neighbours on multiple occasions which is why Scandinavia (+Finland) 'Nordica' is still an umbrella term rather than a political reality. NATO should make demands of both Sweden & Finland. Membership isn't automatic. I'm a Finnish person myself, and I have from the very moment Russia started rattling its saber against Finland that now would be the time to join the NATO. The only real consequences they could impose right now are economic ones, as they are preoccupied with killing Ukrainian civvies and could not realistically attack Finland. And so, between being threatened by Kremlin on a semi-weekly basis and seeing what happened to other countries attempting to remain neutral (although not a part of the EU), I believe that NATO membership's gotta be now or never. Ukraine pretends to be a democracy. Zelensky closed opposition channels and jailed his political rival, all before war. He passed the law that forbade speaking Russian at work, and that's in Russian speaking regions. Ukrainian culture has involved nationalist agenda for years. I mean, no one seems to care now
One of the former billionaires in Russia that was exiled basically stated in an interview, or practically every interview that he's on now, that Putin is nothing more than a bully and cannot really understand any sort of diplomatic intentions. He only responds to force and strength. So technically speaking if Finland and Sweden want to avoid conflicts with Russia militarily all they have to do is actually join NATO and Russia will never dare touch them. Same thing for every other country in the world that wants to avoid a Russian aggression with a military invasion
Exactly. Russia and through putin is projecting what will stop them. Dont join nato means join nato. Like thing one and two from cat in the hat, opposite is true.
But how do countries avoid constant invasions and mass murders from the US/UK and NATO? Ofcourse, saying anything against the west must make me a russian bot, or supporter, but I am curious how do we prevent US and UK from killing 1.1 million Iraqis, over 1 million Vietnamese, destroying Lybia, Syria, Laos, Cambodia, Afghanistan and dozens of other nations they ruined in the past 8 decades?
Russia attacking Finland - even without NATO backing - would result in its army being sent home in small pieces. Simo Haya was the most exceptional sniper, but he wasn't exceptional as a Finn. They look, sound, and act like very nice people - and they are - until you invade their country.
They have the largest artillery in Europe with an armed force just as technologically sound as the UK or Germany. The Finnish landscape would be hellish for the Russians as they'd have to move through deep valleys and forests, perfect for artillery ranging and full-scale ambushes. Not to mention every bridge and road could be easily and quickly blown up, making it that much harder to move across. All aircraft the Russians have would easily be taken out by advanced air-to-air systems, of which they have a huge amount. The only way they could realistically defeat the Finns would be via nukes.
A russian attack on Finland would be very costly. There would be a huge Scandinavian solidarity. Sweden with its strong military industry and Norway with its oil and money would build up a massive support system.
As a Swede I can say this. I will lay down my life protecting any and all Nordic country from military aggression. We are brothers and sisters now and always.
"The Finns think that if Putin can slaughter his sisters, brothers and cousins in Ukraine, as he is doing now, then there is nothing stopping him from doing it in Finland." Alexander Stubb
There are a few differences between Ukraine and Finland which means Russia will never succeed with a land attack. First of all they are pretty bad at it as it has shown over and over again, the regions that they have attacked in Ukraine are basically flatlands, any uneven terrain and they get their teeth kicked in. Terrain in eastern finnish border is a whole other story, the few roads that lead into the country are carved out of tundra, mud and extremely thick forest. Second is that just like in the Winter War, this is what Finland has been training for for since WWII, it's the only thing they been training for while Russians have been training for defense only. Also EU Mutual Defense clause means any and all EU-members can freely come into Finland and defend it whenever they want, one thing we know is that there are a lot of fingers on the trigger in EU right now waiting to squeeze. Basically the threats have lost their effect after a decade of throwing them around and people are getting sick of them.

Finland was in a very desperate situation barely 80 years ago, learning from both history books and personal stories of veterans, it would seem an alien thing, like a thing of the past to think about it nowadays. But now we're currently(and have been for a long time) living in a world where dictatorships thrive once more at the cost of its denizens, held under tight control. We're living through another terrible chapter that should never have rhymed or repeated in modern times. I dearly hope Finland and all other nations will never see the light of day when their country is in a state of war, even if our army has always been prepared for the worst. It feels hopeless knowing that there's nothing you can concretely do as an individual to change the course of history, but hopefully as a collective, we can change for the better. Whether you're Russian or Ukrainian, I hope you can make a difference. As small, as big as it may be, a change for better. May all Ukrainians hold out and survive against absolute tyranny. If Russia were to try an invasion of Finland from that base up north, they'd be going into a very sparsely populated region. The capital city, Helsinki, is nearly 500 miles away. Their logistics would be extremely hard--pressed to supply the invasion force while it was still in Russia and not under attack. As they've learned in Ukraine, they'd never be able to maintain it on a 500 mile march through hostile territory, and there's simply nothing worth grabbing in the vicinity of that border crossing point. There are virtually no other bases in that part of Russia to augment a buildup and further logistic support either. Russia has far more densely-clustered bases to the south, very near Helsinki. If they decided to attack, they'd do it there.
There are lots of military bases and assets scattered all across the country. Some are big bases, others are small secret caches. Russia would need to invade the whole country if they want to have any effect and stop insurgencies, not just encircle Helsinki.
@@gordonski9310 I think he mean road or train network. Anyway their supplies wouldn't last because of Finland not being flatland and their convoy would be attacked by hidden soldiers.
@@Boomkokogamez Actually the worst mistake Russia could do is to assemble a convoy similar to what they did north of Kiev. That convoy would be decimated in it's entirety. Finland has very capable air force and accurate long range artillery, complimented with MLRS systems. Russia wouldn't have anything even resembling an air superiority over Finland either, so yea. There's just no point in Russia invading Finland. It would be a horrible blood bath for Russian conscripts.
@@gordonski9310 Yes. And do u guess what kind of artillery they have targeted there few places where u come in. U can not leave roads. Thats a main problem. Forest are too thick, Lakes are making it impossible in winter or summer. And terrain is not flat. And yes there are several big bridges to go on. I said Russian troops could come in like 5km and no more. Its important to let them come atleast somepoint in our area. Easier to destroy in certain places.

After what has happend in Ukraine, it is not a question IF Sweden and Finland should join, it’s a question of WHEN. Together we stand strong against the big bully Russia, which will continue to suffer huge losses and soon must be forced to return beaten and empty handed
I think it will be all signed by the autumn at the latest to be honest, which can only be a good thing for both countries. I wouldn't be surprised if Moldova starts seriously thinking about signing up to NATO soon too
@@stevedimmock930 Moldova and Georgia have low chances of joining NATO. Likewise, Moldova is more protected since the sinking of the MOSKVA. Without the Moskva it would be difficult for Odessa to fall. If Odessa does not fall, they do not reach Moldova. Pro-Russian militiamen from Transnitia are dying in Ukraine, they were recruited by Putin.
I honestly thought Putin wouldn’t invade Ukraine originally cause he had figured by doing so, this would push the Finns and Swedes into NATO. So Putin had more to lose then gain from a security point of view. Now that Putin went through with Ukraine, all bets are off. He gambled and the house won, to bad so sad. Finns and Swedes joining NATO is the best course of action now. It’s clear if you are not part of NATO, you’re free gain.
Putin is desperate to secure his legacy. By killing any Ukrainians and destroying their lives if they resist. The russian civilians in many cases already lost the courage they had in 1991 stopping a military coup. He was trying to intimidate ukraine the same way. Now they are allegedly arresting opposition ukrainians. Dispicable, russians need to stop this war if they dont want to sink with putin. Please grow a backbone russians, come back out on the streets. Passive resistance doesnt work against putin...and fsb...shame on supporting putin, your screwing your country. World ignored it when russia destroyed chechnyas cities and killed 10s of thousands of civilians there, but not anymore.
I personally think this is more about consolidating power against the West. If they happen to win Ukrainian neutrality, all the better. But solidifying all of Europe as an American 4th reich colony isn't a big threat when they've solidified the 70% of the rest of the world's population.
I am from Ukraine and someone told me that Finland's history is similar to us, so I'm here (maybe because all our troubles are from our common neighbour). I wish I knew about you earlier. Hope I could visit Finland one day❤️
I think we need to realize that Russia's greatest military prowess were mainly defensive in nature. When Russians are on the attack, they often struggle due to poor logistics and a lack of coordination.
@@UhYeahWhateverDude Nukes they cannot use, because it would cause Russia to fight about 50countries at once. Not only NATO, also countries like India would take huge offence at the use of nukes. The moment they use a single nuke is the moment Russia will be destroyed and never recover again. China wouldn't save them, because China wants to keep existing along with potential trade partners.
It wasn't Russia at the time of WW2 but Soviet Union. Millions soldiers fight for Red Army were from other Socialist Republics not modern russian territory. It's annoying that people keep saying that Russia 'won'....without support of other Republics, Nazi would have burn St Petersburg and Moscow to the ground. Russia alone isn't that strong. It took them years and two wars to submit Chechnya, just a small region. I'm praying that Ukraine will win this war and Russians will redimensionate their ego once for all.
I would like to add a quote by our president when asked about the current situation and wether or he is scared of Russia: "I'm not scared, and Finns are not scared but surely we are fully awake."
As a American. I just wanted to say that I support whatever decision Finland and Sweden makes. I have no doubt the governments will do what they feel is best for their people. /cheers.
In recent polls around 65-70% of people supoort NATO membership and most of the parliament supports it so it's only a matter of time when Finland will actually join

I like how(not) Russia just decides what other sovereign nations should and shouldn't do. Can you imagine if Finland started telling Russia what alliances it could and couldn't make with other countries. Nothing but bullies, Thats why NATO exists.
Well, hate to break your bubble but that's pretty much what NATO and USA, UK too, does; dictate what sovereign nations can or cannot do. The difference is that's your side hence you see your side's actions as justified.

I don't think, that the other nuclear states would want to end the world in case of use of tacticals, but I hope, that the response would be devastating for Russia. Well they already have one with the EU and France, provided Marine Le Pen doesn't become the next French president cause she will definitely not care, she even wants to be friends with Putin...
Hi, I'm from the future. This war is well known today, and the world is grateful to Putin, who is recognized as a genius and a visionary. He managed to unite the EU and pushed more Nations to join Nato, he allowed many other countries to develop turning into commercial partners for those EU nations looking for new sources for oil and gas. Also, once the war finished, the Ukraine have been rebuilt and finally became part of the EU, going from a nation most people didn't know where it was on a map to a developed European country everyone loves to visit. We, as European, achieved so much thanks to Putin and his dumb choices. He did this for us. And for Russia, which is now an open, modern country led by young leaders, after the revolution where Putin has been killed.
I am not sure they will be *a* Russia afterwards. There might very well be many broken pieces, some civilized, some run by warlords. It will be interesting times…
One thing that has definitely changed is the EU’s foreign policy coordination. We know that the member states don’t entirely agree, but they stick to their common decisions. Whether you hear it from Charles Michel, Ursula von der Leyen, Josep Borrell… or Macron or Scholz, the message is the same. That was unthinkable two months ago. One more conflict like this, and the EU will have turned into a real super power instead of just being a trading cartel. We *will* have a common foreign policy and we *will* have a common military and we *will* have EU nukes and not just French nukes.
It sounds funny, because once Russia gave independence to Finland and its territory. The invasion of the USSR in Finland was because of the complicity of Finland Nazi Germany in 1941, Finland had invaded Russia. You can't build a picture of the world without seeing the big picture. The United States and the Soviet Union are almost identically named. There were also NATO alliances and the Warsaw Pact. Imagine that the United States is falling apart in 1991, and Texas, California, Alabama, Alabama (it's like Estonia or Lithuania) joins the Warsaw Pact, places armed forces and builds bases, America is indignant, but does nothing. Texas is applying to join the Warsaw Pact, and there is already a problem, it's already scary, isn't it, because Texas for the United States is like Ukraine for Russia. You don't understand enough history to understand the processes. And who is the aggressor here can be seen on the world map by the NATO alliance, and not from the screens of CNN and BBC
Well, to comment the video's content. What russia actually might think if they would decide to invade finland what ever the reason. 1. Terrain. Finland is mostly forest. Finnish military is trained operating in guerilla type operation in forests. 2. Finland has the one of the biggest (if not the biggest) trained army reserve in europe 3. Finnish military equipment is quite modern. It doesn't rely anymore to russian era equipment like for example ukraina. 4. Finlands military training is concidered very good in international standars. Professional soldiers in finnish military are highly regarded. 5. I served my conscription in artillery many many years ago, but with few hour retraining I could still operate/aim both artillery cannons I used and probably others too. And I've seen some of the depos middle of nowhere with hundreds cannons fully maintained and operational back in the day. I bet there are literally hundreds if not thousands of these depos well hidden. I can only imagine what it is nowadays. I bet there are spare cannons to each crew and there are many generation of artillery crews in reserves.
Finland is also very heavily armed and well equipped, for example its artillery is the largest in the Western Europe and total reserve is almost 1M. Russia would need to deal with long range stealth cruise missiles, F-35 fighter jets (currently replacing F/A-18) and all kinds of other nasty things, i.e. attack would be way too costly for them and I doubt the Russian soldiers and citizens would be very motivated to wage war.
@@7yslater We are not afraid. But we consider joining NATO, because Russia is apparently so bad at making decisions that it's no longer a guarantee that they would stay away from Finland. Being in NATO would more than likely prevent the conflict, since Finland definitely isn't worth starting a war with NATO. Simply put, we aren't worried about surviving war with Russia, we are trying to avoid it. And if you seriously fucking think about asking "why would we want to avoid a war with Russia then", then I would very kindly ask you to take your ignorant head out of your asshole. While Finland would be a good ally in NATO, as well as they are in EU, it's a decision that is entirely up to the Finnish people. And that is the most important part.
While Finland has to set their own security as first priority, as a free and democratic country it has a moral obligation to send a clear signal against fascist aggression and crimes against humanity. Joining NATO, would be such a signal.
