We were able to take a trip across the country to Manchester, Vermont to visit some of our favorite companies in the fly fishing industry. We were able to take a look Behind the Brand of Orvis and see how their fly reels are made. You will not look at fly reels the same ever again!

My dogs came running and barking into the room because I was laughing so hard at "I'm buying a Moonshine because they come with two tips". Dang that made my side hurt. NUMBER1!!!

Still fishing my Zero gravity Helios1 10’ 7wt ! One of my fav Stillwater rods. Have a couple of CFO’s from the 80’s that I use on small stream rods, no issues!

Great insight into how the Orvis reels are made. I have a Clearwater 5# rod and reel and enjoying as a new fly fisher and confirming I made the right choice from my research. Will be investing in a Orvis 7# weight set up in the near future. Thanks Gary from Australia.

I own, used and abused Orvis reels for 40 years. Fresh and salt. Never had a problem with any of them. Now that I know where the are made I’m an even bigger fan!

Mirage is made in the USA, but Hydros is made overseas along with Clearwater rods. Helios are made in the US.

Quite interesting. Advice to Curtis. It would be smart to never let Cheech get alone with a 3-D printer. You would suddenly see your shop selling guaranteed fish whistles. ;-)

this is nifty. as a machinist, myself, I've thought about the possibility of making myself a reel. Its entirely too much work for a one or two off. Also as a machinist, though, i can't help but wonder where the hell all your safety glasses are?! Get ready for an OSHA visit...

I was at an Orvis store two days ago here in the PNW...every in-stock reel had a "Made in China" sticker on the reel seat...very disappointing. I have a Battenkill 8/9 I bought about 30 yrs ago which still works fine, but I'll never stoop so low as to by an Orvis product that's made in China. Made in the USA should be the default, not the exception.
@FlyFishFood
@FlyFishFood Год назад
They have a line of products for every budget. All of their high end stuff is made in the USA. The more budget stuff is made overseas. That’s kind of the industry standard.

@@FlyFishFood Was the Orivs rod that Cheech "taco'd" made in the USA?
@FlyFishFood
@FlyFishFood Год назад
@@brianhall137 yessir. No US made rod will stand up to improper usage. That said, I have 6 Helios rods that I have used for years. Only broke one because I sat on it. It’s OK that you don’t like Orvis… but it’s not because they don’t have some of the very best gear in the whole industry!
@brianhall137
@brianhall137 Год назад
@@FlyFishFood Maybe the Moonshine supplied with two tips would be more appropriate for your fishing style...LOL! It's not that I dislike Orvis...one of my favorite rods is an Orvis 9ft 9wt that my wife bought me for a wedding gift...it's an IM6 graphite rod from the mid-90's I used it when I lived back east for stripers and schoolie bluefish, and now I occasionally use it as a single-handed steelhead rod now that I'm on the west coast. I'm just frustrated by all the Chinese gear that's invaded what was a US (and UK) dominated industry. Here in the western US, we have some phenomenal rod makers...Sage, Winston, Loomis, Echo, etc..they all have affordable (IMO) rods made in the USA, although some of them have Asian manufactured gear as well. Warranty service on overseas rods is dismal in my experience and I've decided not to subject myself to it in the future. To each his own I suppose.
@FlyFishFood
@FlyFishFood Год назад
@@brianhall137 Echo not made in the USA. The entry USA rod is about $600. Not sure what you do for flies, tippet, hooks, etc. lot of non-USA stuff there.

very strange, only 1 individual on the entire tour did not wear a trash cap, why? i thought was the 17754c%432995B amendment that all Americans had to wear one? or is it that all the trash caps were free?

@@FlyFishFood it is not a bad reel. I try to spend my hard earned money on products made in the United States. Orvis gives the impression that their products are all made in the United States. But to my knowledge the only reels made here are the Mirage series.
@FlyFishFood
@FlyFishFood Год назад
Nowhere do they give the impression that everything they make is made in the United States. I’m not sure where you gathered that. The same can be said for almost any manufacturer out there. If I were to swear off every company that I’ve had a small issue with or even a large issue with. I wouldn’t have any gear to fish with anymore.

I hope they're better quality than the overpriced trash they used to turn out. I wouldn't even take a chance of getting stung again. Spools seizing on the spindle, ratchet/click pin literally wearing out after 2 days fishing, brand logo wiping off with a slight rub. Fool me once.

@syphogenic1743
@syphogenic1743 Год назад
@@FlyFishFood I partially watched it. I just remembered the centre cap screw from the drag fell off too. I suspect you're going to say they've upped the quality and if I watched the entire video I'd see that. Too late they've lost a customer for life by knowingly selling inferior products. Lost credibility. Don't get me started on their wading boots!
