@oneviwatara this report felt like the reporter was doing a book report and the teacher said you need 1000 words. So he just went around and around trying to fill it up. I understand what they are saying about multiple changes at the same time but there wasn't really any specific items like wad it quality control that failed? Was it worker training? Was it a broken design? Was it a part failure?

oneviwatara that’s exactly my point, the video doesn’t even go into any of these things at all. It just said they botched it, changed a lot too fast but what is the cause? Too many words when they could have just said what were the issues and possible culprit of the chicago plant having low quality control. That simple.

Or they were wise for seeing the writing on the wall with ever increasing fuel economy standards that can't be met without reliability issues too. Clearly ford is just focusing on its forte which has always been the Explorers, Escapes, and Pickups. That's not all bad if it allows more engineering time to be put into them. I'd be more upset if Toyota stopped making Corolla or Camry, a wise buyer would pick those if they just want a long term ownership sedan.

Not really, Ford was making tons of money from their SUVs but was losing money from their cars. So they did what any intelligent company would do an cut their losses before the situation became dire. This is why GM had to be bailed out in 2008, because they had lost cause syndrome and tried to preserve their failing brands. This is why Ford is the only of the Big Three who didn’t need to be bailed out by the USA, because they are smart and willing to make sacrifices where it matters.

Terrible feature. 8 minutes in to a report about a "botched launch" before the first word about any launch issues. And then we just get a list of two recalls. What for? How did that alter customer demand? We don't know. How is this connected to sales at all? Was production delayed such that no vehicles were available for sale? Are they sitting unsold on the lot because of quality issues? We don't know. We just know that there was a botched launch. We know, because CNBC tells us. Over and over. "Botched launch". But no explanation. I'm kind of amazed that so much research and work went into a report about this and the one core issue of the entire thing never gets explained. The title is "how Ford Botched Its Explorer Relaunch". If you are going to headline a report like that, you at least have to explain that one thing - how Ford botched its explorer launch. Simply stating that the launch was botched over and over doesn't actually tell me *how* ford botched the launch, which is ostensibly the entire reason for the report. I know they had two recalls. I know they had to redo the entire production line. I know they changed the entire platform all at once. So at least those are things that contribute to botching launches. But what the heck happened? Did they intend to produce 500k cars last quarter and only made 300k? Or did they make their target number of cars and scare off their customers by having a poor product? Because those are two very different things. One just means your return is delayed. The other might mean you've screwed your entire brand and the company is in trouble.

It was always the case that lower income people couldn't afford large vehicles with lots of features. Nothing new there. I do agree that some of the premium lines are way up there in price, but once the initial rush to get those models has passed, you'll be able to get a plain vanilla Explorer for a price point reflective of the insanity that the entire industry is facing with ever increasing competition for safety and fuel economy, and of course the dimwit reviewers and consumers that think they need an LCD dash and infotainment center. Your dollars speak louder than anything else. Buy what suits your needs. It just a shame when certain "safety" features get forced onto consumers then everyone has to pay more for the lowest common denomination (Most crappy drivers out there), like idiots who can't bother to see if there's anything behind their vehicle before they put it in to reverse then back over children, or can't refrain from driving if they're so sleepy they can't even stay in their own lane so they need lane assist, or refuse to drive at a responsible speed for the conditions so they need traction control. We all pay more so idiots can have their handicaps coddled, when what we should be doing instead is just a more extensive drivers' license criteria where we don't let these irresponsible people have a drivers license at all.

I don’t understand why folks are so anxious to jump on the first model year of anything. History shows the same pattern with a lot of automakers, even Toyota with their transmissions and Honda with their oil dilution problems, Kia and Hyundai with their metal shavings seizing engines and Chrysler with their Ecodiesels. Every single time something all new is announced folks line at dealerships with checkbooks ready to preorder before it even goes on sale. Ford made a huge mistake getting rid of Mark Fields. He wanted to delay the Explorer launch. Now we know why. When a man with a 20+ years of expertise, and a proven track record, tells you to do something, you do it. Instead they throw out the expert and bring in a chair salesman. And this is the result. Mark also never mentioned getting rid of sedans or small cars. Now that they are leaving those segments they are handing several hundred thousand sales to their competitors each year. I hope the company does well in the future, since I have been a loyal customer for a long time.

Failed rear main oil seal, failed valve cover gaskets, failed brake master cylinder, water pump hose burst about every 10K miles. Needed a complete tune up every 10K miles, too. Gulped premium leaded gas at the rate of 12 miles per gallon. Undercarriage of the car was covered in rust, even though it was driven in the Southwest. Carried a towel in the car to wipe off the condensation on the interior glass. That was my defroster. Carried one quart of oil and one quart of transmission fluid to top off if I was going to drive it more than 100 miles on the highway.

Seems ignorant to put this focus on Ford. All automakers had their teething problems with new tech. Ford just kept everything the same for a long time to mature that tech, now with a new cycle it is just a lot of new tech at once. Point being, it's always best to let a new design get a couple years under its belt, but then you're better off with it than some other automaker making more chances with every model year.

American automakers have lost their purpose in this country, they don't really have a niche anymore other than with law enforcement and legacy buyers. If you want luxury, choose one of the German brands or Lexus. If you want great standard features and shocking design, choose one of the South Korean automakers. Finally, if you want reliability, safety, or value, choose one of the Japanese automakers. There's no category for American automakers, exclusively, anymore. That's why Cadillac is struggling, Ford in is the middle of a 20-year "turnaround," and GM is but a shadow of its former self. American automakers don't have an identity anymore. Sooner or later, they won't know who they are and they will end up just like Infiniti.

I am a team leader on the engine line where we build most of the HEV models of Explorers and Avaiators called the SHO Center which is located about a half a mile from the CAP plant. I EXTREMELY enjoy the new product and much of the launch was challenging. But with this new plant built specifically for Lincoln and Explorer HEV models it is all coming together smoothly now and the result is going to be fantastic for our future. If you ever have a chance please test drive a Hybrid PHEV Aviator. It is amazing! I believe this is the future of all our SUVs in the industry. It is a totally different experience than our older 2018 Explorer builds. It is taking a little longer for it to catch on but I believe this will be an ultra success and benchmark for the industry going forward. Once the market gets more of our product it will be a non decision on what is the best luxury SUV out on the market. Lincoln Aviator is going to be a HIT! Mark my words. The Explorer FHEV(no plug needed) models we build for the police are also impressive with how much acceleration they produce with the added power of the FHEV battery with addition of the traditional 3.3L Gas Engine. Acceleration is much more important to our police than top speed and our product has the best in the business also with more room and better off road capabilities. This is just a small summary from an UAW worker on why I think this product is going to do much better in the future.

12:26 “Ford has some of the best suspension tuning.” What is this guy smoking? Ford doesn’t know how to tune a suspension. THAT is exactly why the Firestone tires exploded on Explorers. Ford recommended a cold inflation tire pressure BELOW what Firestone recommended since they (Ford) wanted their truck frame based Explorer to have a car like ride. They were incorrectly trying to get the tires to perform the job of the suspension. The tires overheated at low pressure and high speed, which lead to the blowouts. Ford STILL doesn’t know how to tune a suspension. They shop this out to companies like Rancho, Bilstein, or Foxx for their “high performance” vehicles.

@douglasgroff7648
@douglasgroff7648 4 года назад
DannyDangers WHEN the tire blowouts happened is not relevant. WHY the tire blowouts occurred is. Thanks to the Ford/Firestone investigation and Congressional hearings, the laws were changed. Tire registration is a Federal mandate on tire shops in case of recalls, TPMS became Federally mandated equipment, and proper tire inflation was thrust into the American consciousness. But, you missed my point. The reason why “Ford has some of the best suspension tuning” is ONLY attributable to Ford because they smartened up and shopped this part of the design to (or at least heavily partnered with) outside entities. It’s not as though Ford does it all in a vacuum without outside assistance from the OE suppliers. True, most other auto manufacturers also shop out suspension tuning to outside companies such as Bilstein, Rancho and Foxx. The only reason why I didn’t mention this fact was to keep the discussion centered around the subject of the video... the Ford Explorer.

Trust me, Toyota brand name is overvalued. You never see a 10 year old prius in UK because they're designed for 10 years and then the battery replacement and messing with the hybrid system costs more than a car, so a prius after 10 years always gets scrapped. Most Toyotas rot away and I believe many of the pickups sold in the US even have the frames rusting, which is ridiculous. BMWs at least have a weak spot with the arches, which isn't critical. Toyotas also have nothing innovative in most cars and they're bare bones, so there isn't much that can go wrong. Modern well equipped Toyotas are nowhere near as reliable as old trucks and if you don't maintain them properly and thrash them around, they will fail.
@cocotaveras8975
@cocotaveras8975 4 года назад
Artur Turkevych I vehemently disagree on all counts. Their are countless, and I mean legitimately countless, cases of Toyota vehicles from sedans to SUVs to pickup trucks and beyond that well outlast expectations for their lifespan. They are most certainly built to last and to elicit joyful consumer satisfaction which they succeed in doing superbly. The Japanese automotive machine is highly successful in bringing to fruition long lasting and reliable vehicles within their lineup. Examples of such intuitiveness, can be found by looking no further than the Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Camry and Toyota Highlander all of which are highly valued and well esteemed by both consumers and the automotive world alike.
@cocotaveras8975
@cocotaveras8975 4 года назад
Artur Turkevych And when you say lack of innovation what on earth are you even talking about? Do you even here what you are saying? Toyota has been rolling out hybrid synergy drives technology for years and has had immense influence in setting the standard for hybrid vehicles with the Prius. This automotive company has also been experimenting with many new concepts vehicles from a hydrogen vehicle, self driving vehicle, handicapped specific products, and etc. So when you say lack of innovation, I vehemently disagree and the evidence is plainly in front of you... Also, if I didn't get it across before the Prius basically revolutionized the industry of hybrid cars...it's literally the great grandfather of all the hybrid vehicles today. Toyota paved the way for a mass movement of hybrid cars, no doubt, so this company is definitely not to be considered as lacking in innovation if it spurred the creation of a whole new class of vehicle. So the only thing I have to say left is...GO TOYOTA! www.google.com/amp/s/www.forbes.com/sites/simonmainwaring/2018/11/13/purpose-in-action-how-toyota-is-driving-growth-innovation-and-impact/amp/

The interior trim pieces felt loose and weren't lined up properly, buttons were cheap and moved around too much in the housing, the centre Ipad like infotainment screen gets super distorted when you look at it from an angle, not to mention the terrible UI, and the leather seats had already lost their structure despite only having 6,000 miles on the odometer.

@3:25 Really!? Who researched this? Here is a list of SUV's that beat Ford to the unibody platform approach with SUV's in the Explorer Segment: Honda Pilot: First debuted an SUV based on a platform that was shared from their Accord sedan in 2003. Toyota Highlander: Came out in 2001 with the same K platform from the Camry. Nissan Pathfinder: For its second generation in 1995, Nissan opted to try a unibody SUV. By its third generation, Nissan had reverted to a body on frame construction. Nissan reversed corse again in 2012. Chevy Traverse: Built in 2008 to compete with the growing amount of unibody 3 row SUV's. If an owner wanted unibody, they went Traverse. If body on frame, they went Suburban, Tahoe etc. How about this one? Mazda CX-9: The Mazda CX-9 came out as a unibody SUV in 2006. It used the Ford CD3 platform which was used to create other Ford Products including two Lincolns. There are others and I think you understand the point. Ford was late to the game in changing to unibody SUV's. So the report is just wrong in that sense. Ford makes good products, but this company seems to be mismanaged in a large way that will create large problems going forward with future projects.

2:58 This video tries to spin Ford as leading the charge towards unibody, FWD crossovers, in 2011, saying "It was a very unusual design at the time." But it was clearly a follower in this development, not a leader. Vehicles like the Toyota Rav4, in 1996, Lexus RX300, in 1999, and the Toyota Highlander, in 2001 lead the evolution to more car-like crossovers, as they are today. Today, the Toyota Highlander is the market sales leader the Explorer used to be

Ford could have made the Explorer unibody and still have off-road capability. Jeep has been doing it since the 1980s beginning with the Cherokee XJ and then with the Grand Cherokee after its 1992 launch
@stinkycheese804
@stinkycheese804 4 года назад
They did make the Explorer unibody with off-road capability. They just made it more tuned for road use than Jeep did. It is good to have both choices for whichever matters more. However, SCREW THAT! If you live where roads are salted in winter, or you get mud up under it much, you'll wish you had a frame to reinforce the chassis. Unibody sucks on trucks and SUVs unless you really just wanted a high-riding station wagon. Most unibody SUVs are retired due to chassis rust through if not some accident totaling them first or horrific maintenance making them implode.
@JonathanMoosey

I sincerely hope they get it together. These kinds of product roll outs simply cannot happen in today's marketplace. I have applauded FoMoCo for not taking a bailout and doing things by pulling up their own bootstraps. If you really look, they have had some of the most impressive new car releases over the past 20 years alone: Focus, Fusion, Expedition, Excursion, Escape, and Edge. At least one release of each of the models listed here changed the game. They have to research the archives at what made them great and take that as the building block to the next iteration.

In addition to the remarkable looks and stance of the 2020 Explorer, all trims come with exterior and interior LED lighting; Ford Co-Pilot 360 (including Blind Spot Monitoring and lane centering); as well as the drive modes (Eco, Sport, Mud, Wet/Slippery, etc.); the 4WD has the terrain management system; the RWD gives it better towing (5300-5600 lbs) and handling. Every part of the 6th Gen. Explorer is worthy of the nameplate that created the 3rd row SUV segment.
