*Its all great fun seeing Supercars and Hypercars on your channel but I really do appreciate these videos of more realistically attainable cars. Thanks Tim!*
It's fun, it's cheap, it has great equipment, it's based on a Japanese car so it's extremely reliable and easy to fix, it looks fantastic, it sounds great, it's a convertible, it's Italian and it's fuel efficient. Name one reason not to like it.
I had a 1974 124 Spider Sport which I wish I would still have now. It was a wonderful thing that I even drove to college in the winter. It truly was a classic that I would recommend anyone to drive and appreciate. Thanks Shmee!
Pretty neat car - love the look and sound. I enjoyed his reaction to the bypass valve releasing the turbo pressure. The roof process is simply brilliant and it reflects that attention to detail Mazda took with the car.
This was my first car, I haven't bought one since. I love it. It's really quite cheap compared to other sports cars and it's very practical for a young driver. I couldn't recommend one enough
I had a 124 sport spyder long ago. Glad to see its return. My brother turbocharged it. It was beyond awesome. I'd like to see something like that with the new one.!either way it's a great car. Thanks for the video.
shmee150 damn you aha I've just canceled my order on this and now have just told them to keep my order.... thankyou for answering all the hesitations I had.
+Fred Don i meant the 124 spider if you choose the abarth or not... I like the style, i like fiats and i like that they found a successor of the barchetta ;)
Hi Fred, the highlights are optional, just click a box on the order form to remove. A later owner can always apply vinyl if they want to recreate the look (it's a nod to the scheme on a mid-70s 124 rally car).
You can't go wrong with either. I prefer my 16 Arctic White MX-5 Club with the BBS and Brembo brake package. Mine comes with the Bilstein shocks he mentioned. The styling is actually more contemporary Italian with it's curves as opposed to the 124's older flat deck Italian look. The alcantara suede trim are available on the MX-5 as well but in any trim level. Mine has the Flyin Miata exhaust which sounds great. The gearbox in the 124 is the previous MX-5 like my previous 14 Club had which is heavier but necessary for the gear range needed with Fiat engine. They both are great cars. I work for Ferrari but don't have the means to afford one. The 124 and MX-5 provide the best bang for the buck when it comes to sheer driving fun.
14:30 Tim, this is one of the best camera angles, we can see you, we can see the car's interior and the road ahead, it's like being a passenger. Use it more often when it's possible to put the camera like that :)
oooooooohhhhh thats such a nice sound. 6 years ago i bought a renault twingo gordini 133, after i'd paid it off i said i'd never buy a new car again, i owned 2 fiats before then and tbh i'm dying to go back to the brand. this maybe the car i return to fiat for. she's beautiful.
I had a 1982 Fiat 2000, a 2000 Mazda Miata, a 2003 Porsche Boxster and now a 2016 Mazda Miata. I did test drive a very nice 2006 Honda S2000. This car looks more exciting than my current ride, but I'll stick with the 2.0L engine for linear power output,, cost and reliability.
Hi Shmee, just a little corretion from the description: the engine of the Abarth's a 1.4 Multiair, not Multijet as you say. Multijet is the diesel one.
Check out those seat's, would look amazing in my 959. You would never say, this was an Italian take on the Mazda MX5. Even the gorgeous 1.4 Multiair Abarth engine is different to that of the non turbo Mazda. Italian styling and flair, looks so much more for your money than the almost identical Mazda.
Exhaust on the standard mx5 is better as the car sound much more rushed at the top end, I agree the abrath has a great rasp to it, but reaching the top end seemed quite boring compared to the mx5 with an exhaust.
I know this car is very much similar to the MX-5, but Fiat just makes it so much more exciting with the exhaust, the alcantara, the color scheme, and such, for not much more money. Gotta hand it to the Italians for this one.
You don't need to close the latch when putting the roof down. Also, it's very easy to operate the roof one-handed from inside the car, so it can be put up and down while driving.
I'm a huge MX-5 fan. But in my opinion the Abarth version of the 124 looks better than the MX-5. And since it's essentially an MX-5 [an awesome base car to start with] with a very stylish Italian suit, but engineered and built by Mazda in Japan, it should be a reliable and well built car. As you've said Tim, "A fantastic winning combination".
Pretty easy to see the appeal in this car or an MX-5 to be honest. I'm not quite sure I'd have the black bonnet but overall looks very good, plenty of power for a car like this, lovely manual gearbox and it sounds surprisingly good. I suppose 30k is quite a lot of money but then again, you're in that ballpark with most hot hatches these days as well.
On the inside it's very much a Mazda. Not just the new MX-5, but I recognize a lot of stuff from my 2009 Mazda 3. Even the key is the same, lol. If I was in the market for one of these right now it would be a really hard choice for me between the MX-5 RF and the Abarth... Probably would take a lot of test drives.
its actually in the middle of the if the skyactiv-g 131hp and the 160hp engines of the mazda mx5 in terms of price, fuel consumption and co2 emissions. quite an interesting car..
***** im not sure about that either ive never payed attention with those but these affordable sports cars need usability for the average person. Supercars not so much but usability helps
This seems like it might be a viable option, in place of a Lotus. I am so unsure about what I really want. I have a 350Z Nismo that I have grown to really love. My first love was a Lotus Elise and I really would love to get one of them, but to find one and trust that it was unmolested is going to be a slim to none. I could go the option of an Evora, but kind of unsure about that. So seeing this little 124 seems to be great, the downfall is I think that the lack of power might be a concern going from a Z.
I used to have a MX5, then an STi. I've had my eye on the new MX5 and 124. thinking just maybe. I have been riding a lot more in recent years but this looks like Fun! Then 6:10 Oh well. No car will make me feel like that again.
