the pay needs to improve for tennis players for sure! the perks of traveling everywhere is awesome but when all money spent on traveling and eating that really bumps people out.

Hi Simon, That explained a lot about what HAPPENED, but it didn't really explain about the $$$ side of things. Club play I think you said helps out with flights, but do you actually get paid anything? Could you give any information about what income / expenses you had representing the club? Do you make any money, or is it a case of losing money but losing LESS money because the club subsidizes things? If it's a case of losing money, then how does someone pursue this kind of career?

@@Simon.Freund Thanks Simon. I don't really want / need to see anything thats really personal, but am very interested in the tennis specific stuff, to try and understand just what the grind looks like in the beginning. I have a daughter thats following in your footsteps, and I'm just trying to understand what I'm getting myself into. Do I have to sell one kidney, or two?

In my day, we called them Money tournaments! For your viewers there are Tournaments all over Europe With Prize money Organised by Clubs. In France as an aspiring Pro you get a FFT Rating of say First National Series or Whatever your Country Ranking is, or even more if you have an ATP ranking. These tournaments provide you with Food & Accommodation and different amount of prize money! An average week might be 1-2,000 Euro profit Then there is Bundesliga Club Tennis in Germany & that can pay well, generally as a Foreigner you’ll need ATP points to be signed. In Ireland & UK they also have money tournaments & as a Challenger & Futures player this is a way to subsidise your Competitive Career.

@TenisAmador Год назад
Simon probably will answer too, but in Europe there are club championships in every country. Basically you play in a "College" style matchup against another club (3 singles and 2 doubles). I'm not sure about how the prize money for the winning club works, but a lot of clubs hire pro's to play for them in the tournaments. What is a "Club"? No, not like Real Madrid. Basically your tennis club, where you are a member, playing against another clubs from the country.

@ Brian Money: Take for example Germany: In the Summerleagues 1. Bundesliga, 2. Bundesliga, Bayernliga (Bavaria), Regionalliga Süd (Bavaria) ect. the clubs pay tennis pro's to play for the club at the weekends. On the highest league Bundesliga the teams pay atp pro's like Tiago Monteiro, Marco Ceccinato.......

Thanks Simon and great to see you with hard confidence on these brutal courts. Can you tell us how these club matches are arranged and how does one make money from them being at the futures level player? I know being in North America, at least for me this is not something common, or many have heard of. Regardless best of luck (not that you need it :) )! Cheers! M

Basically players travel to a different country ,most of the time its Germany,France,Austria,BENELUX,Italy... The owner of the club will cover all the travel expanses + you get a certain ammount of money for a match. Sometimes it makes a difference if you win or lose,depends on the agreement with the club. Usually you will play like 4-6 matches in the entire season,depends on how good the player is and how you perform in the matches. The more west of Europe the club you're playing for is located,the more money you will probably get. It basically goes from 200-1000€ per weekend from my experience. But professional or semi professional players get paid probably a little more. Lets say you are semi pro(around 1000-1500 on ATP),you play 5 matches per season and you get 1000€ for a match = 4000 - 5000€ in 1 season. Which is a cost for like 5 ITF tournaments = You gotta have rich parents and be really good,or parents with a decent salary,but be extremely talented to have a chance at making it to the top 100 on the ATP rankings,which is where you start making enough money to play a tournament every week or 2. If I remember correctly Basilashvili was one of the players without rich parents,who used to sleep in a car with his father on tournaments and made it,but there are definitely more. Having sponsors and being succesful on social media can also make a difference for semi-pro players. Tennis is a very expensive sport.

Wouldn't it be enough to get to around top 250 to start living from tennis. You are started to get invited to qualies of Grand slam where there are very decent prize many already + prizes on challengers are supposed to cover expenses at least, no?

Mmm, basically being paid to be a ringer. Tbh it's really annoying when you turn up for a match and get thrashed because they've pulled someone in who's a much higher level. What you want is to play competitive tennis, and that is taken away from you. At my tennis level at say 3rd team level the other team pulls in a 1st teamer or coach to guarantee a win, but I'm guessing at this much higher club level pulling in a pro for money is the same. It just turns it into a game of who can afford the most expensive ringers :( Still I understand that it's the only way to fund the dream so you do what you gotta do, but it still doesn't feel right.
