How George Carlin’s '7 Words' Caused a Landmark Supreme Court Decision

For decades, George Carlin was one of the most original and popular comedians to take the stage. His “Seven Words You Can Never Say on TV” routine is often hailed as a masterpiece of standup comedy and helped him get the title of one of the best standup comedians; it took society’s taboos and hangups to task while being flat-out hilarious. Carlin’s seven words are so notoriously profane they got tangled up in a court case, which took on the FCC’s power of censorship and landed in front of the Supreme Court.

I've listened to George Carlin's 7 Words routine since he first performed it. However, I just found it funnier hearing Jon Meecham using profanity. Bravo. He should do it more often. His diction adds a certain class to them.

Man I glad you made this video. Thanks you so much. Your my hero. Okay the reason I am so grateful was because I already know this history, but I learned a lot of new facts and details. Before seeing your video I only knew a short version of this. Now I know the full story. So anyway back in 2013, when I explain what I knew back then to my family at dinner. My twin brother did not believe me and he (my twin brother is very arrogant and so meanly sarcastic) responded with such arrogance, like he was saying their was no way something like this would happened because of the first amendment. We can say what ever we wanted on the airwaves and he sarcastically said to me: “You know what, your exactly right James, your the smartest people in the whole world”. Those insults really affect me emotionally, man I was crying like a baby because I spend a lot of time learning, studying and reading this very interesting and shocking history only just end up being insulted by his arrogant asshole. So seeing your video today proves what I learned back in 2013 was not false, it was true. Thank you so much

The fact of the matter is that as the country has drifted further and further into the right wing, becoming more and more economically anarchistic, more and more moral authoritarians have realized that the deeper you descend into the unregulated, undemocratic private market, the less state law applies to you. Including the constitution and supreme court. Libertarians and most other right wing ideologues cry for smaller government because the industries that manufacture their consent are part of a _big club_ that wants more power, less restrictions on how they can use it, and less responsibility for their actions. That _big club,_ is the one you ain't in. They're not stupid, but the people they brainwash are. "They call it the American Dream because you have to be asleep to believe it." -George Carlin

Ironically, still a standard law practice or not, we're living in a world where the kind of content and social interaction people consume on a daily basis makes the supreme court's decision on this matter completely irrelevant. Almost everyone in first world countries consume their media almost entirely on the internet, from the younger generation that consumes independently produced social media content almost every minute of every day, to the older generation now replacing Television in large part by subscription based services like Netflix that are not bound by the regulations of the FCC. When Carlin wrote and performed this bit there was not a single avenue of media in American that people could consume without the FCC or similar censorship board looking at it first, now you are living in a world where easily 95% of the media you consume the FCC has absolutely no control over whatsoever. Lenny Bruce and George Carlin would be proud.

We quoted George's material to each other verbatim on bus rides, in study hall, whenever. You bet - and I love watching the comedy change from his youth where it ragged on the old people for their stupid behavior to him becoming an old grand-dad who was pissed at the youth and their disrespectful and "stupid" attitudes. Watching the sets in rapid succession shows how we change psychologically over the years, and why the young and the old will always clash.

I think Carlin would understand why the words are censored on RU-vid. Just because it shouldn't be illegal to say certain words doesn't mean that you should say anything you want. There are consequences to verbalizations that free speakers may want to avoid. Freedom of speech is a trade-off. In society, we trade our freedoms for survival--to work, to make money, to take that money to a grocery store, and trade it for food. The alternative is to live outside of society and shout obscenities at the trees while convincing yourself you live in total freedom. The reality is that you must be quiet so the animals you need to hunt for food aren't scared away. Self-censorship is a necessary human reality. Thinking about why we make these trade-offs of our freedom for our survival is the key to a rational life. Carlin had a way of waking people up to rational thought. It was never really about saying bad words in public.

Oh man, I’ve waited for this one! I’m a huge George Carlin fan! I remember when I was a kid I’d watch his hbo specials late at night and I got in trouble one time because I was laughing too loudly, my dad storms into my room and “What the hell are you doing in here?!” Then he saw my tv and goes “I don’t want you watching that dirty old man, turn that sh*t off right now!” Lol Needless to say I continued to watch over the years and it just got funnier, even my dad eventually came around and enjoyed Carlin’s comedy. I still watch his stuff on RU-vid when I need a good laugh. He was and still is my favorite comic of all time, just knowing he got under the skin of the federal government as well as the FCC is hilarious in itself and even my own dad hated him for a time. That only fueled my own rebellious faze. Guys like him, Robin Williams, Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, and Cheech & Chong are they guys I listened to and watched the most when I was growing up.
