GLP-1 agonist medications have been a popular topic of discussion recently. While this weight loss drug was designed for obesity, GLP-1 agonists like Ozempic have made their way into Hollywood. Dr. Nadolsky explains how GLP-1 medications cause weight loss, answers questions about safety concerns, and discusses interesting patient stories about how people react to this medication. Yes. Have a competent doctor explain the risks and benefits of the medication(s) available to you. Then, make a decision together.

Dr. Nadolsky, I wish that one of you online doctors would address the issue of the GLP1 agonist shortage and how Diabetics who depend on these drugs to control their A1c and to help them lose weight, CANT GET these drugs because everyone is taking them to look better in swimwear at the beach this summer. I can't fill my Trulicity prescription this month because NOBODY has it. Insurance needs to hold to their guns and not pay for these unless you are Diabetic and/or morbidly obese. Id like to hear your view on this issue.

People trying to slim down this summer are causing the Ozempic shortage, not doctors who are just stating the facts. Remember how, at the start of the pandemic, the WHO advised against using masks? They later found masks highly effective in controlling virus spread, but initially advised against them due to potential shortages. Thinking back, if they had been upfront from the start, it might have saved many lives. By the way, considering you have type 2 diabetes, why do you think you deserve the drug more than someone who is morbidly obese, struggles every day, and suffers from sleep apnea at night? In my view, the person at greater risk deserves the priority.

I started Mounjaro after this 2 diagnoses last July and have had no problems getting my pens all year. It’s really not impossible to get

One big downside of GLP-1 is the fat/lean mass loss, studies are showing as much as 2/3 lean mass loss to 1/3 fat. As you mentioned, muscles are a huge sink for excess glucose, having less muscle is not a good thing. Also I think it's a little disingenuous to say you haven't received any money from pharma, when the main reason that WW acquired your company for 132Mil was to get access to GLP-1 agonists. WW saw the writing on the wall and knew they needed to have a way to get these drugs to it's members.

No studies are showing a ratio of fat/lean mass loss. They only report weight loss. Unless you can provide a link to a study that also measured lean body mass pre and post?

I have been on tirzepatide for 8 months and did dexa scans before and after losing over 30 lbs. My lean body mass and muscle mass are essentially unchanged. However I made an effort to eat a high protein diet and incorporate heavy resistance training.

@@jinxigrl thats very surprising considering fat mass has a lean component to it. Everything I've seen on weightloss says losing lean mass is expected but you can maintain muscle mass or even gain some depending on training status.

Claiming that this drug causes muscle loss is just a dishonest scare tactic. Haven't people who've experienced rapid weight loss from other treatments, like bariatric surgery, lost the same amount of muscle? The data is right there showing it's the same.
