How GM Dominated the Modern HD Truck Market

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s the heavy-duty truck market exploded as Dodge began implementing the use of Cummins engines and Ford continued to develop their IDI engines. By 1994, Dodge was seeing redesigned their trucks and saw massive success and by 1999, Ford had released their all new Super Duty F-series trucks.
While Ford was enjoying also enjoying massive new success with their new platform and impressive 7.3L Powerstroke engine they introduced earlier in the 90s, GM was hard at work developing a new platform, an entirely new truck with a new drivetrain and engine with the hopes of blowing the doors off of both Dodge and Ford.
And that's exactly what they did in the coming years.

I haven't researched it, but anecdotally, I see a lot more F-350 and 450s doing heavy towing, and also Cummins Dodges, than the GM HDs.

Ya i dnt see any gm/chevy towing heavy. All i see hauling big loads 17K + is dodge and ford. I drive a 18 3500 cummins high output with a few things done and a built tranny and i tow between 17k and about 30k regularly hauling equipment for work and my dodge does it beautifuly. I drove my bosses 2022 ford 3500 because he wanted me to "see how awsome it was". I will say it makes great powe. I'd still put a tuner, exhaust, & air intake on it. But the real problem is there damb exhaust brake. It does pretty much nothing compared to my cummins. I live in northern California in the mountains and with out the exhaust brake towing that kinda weight youll smoke your brake pretty damb quick.

Everybody I know who runs a hotshot rid run Dodge right now. I was looking to get into hot shotting, so I called this one company and talked to them, I told them that I was planning on running a Superduty and they told me they don't hire on anyone running anything but Dodge or a Ford with a cat swap. Now this was 5 or 6 years ago at the least, so all of that may have changed, I don't know. I ended up buying a box truck and later a couple of single axle Freightliners with sleepers before my business went bust.

We have always had GM trucks, have a 94 1500, 04 2500HD and 07 suburban. All have been very reliable. I love the looks of the GMT900 HDs. Might be my favorite. Im a mechanic in the rust belt, i see all types of trucks come in. In my experience, ive seen more GM frames, half ton or fully boxed HD, rotted out than any other trucks. GMs nox-rust wax coating is not adequate for protection in salty states. I had a beautiful 2014 2500HD Duramax in the other week, 107,000 miles, frame is scaley, rusty, and rear leaf spring brackets rusted out. Not even 10 years old. If you have a 1500, youll probably eventually have to do a cam and lifters when the DOD craps out. Overall these are good trucks but have their faults. In my opinion, buy a 2500 without DOD and keep up on the wax frame coating (they sell touch up cans) and it will last forever

I wouldn't really say GM dominates the HD truck market. Look at the truck's actually working, which are the hotshotters. They are almost always Dodge with a few Fords. It is a rarity to see a GMHD with a US DOT number pulling anything. The most I see a GM HD pulling is a camper owned by a private individual. GM and Ford really should've chosen i6 engines for their Duramax and PowerStroke engines. Pretty much all semi trucks these days are I6s, the V8s have died off.

If you're talking about domination look at Ford new high output Power Stroke 500 horses with 1,200 lb of torque that's domination buddy not this little GMC with only 975 pound feet of torque

My son is a diesel truck mechanic, he said Ram are the most comfortable and the Cummins is the easiest to work on. The GM trucks are the best driving and most reliable. The Fords have put his daughter through college for becoming a nurse, and they pay all his bills and give him spending money.

Yeah, but 975ft lbs is a lot still! But don’t worry gm will go over 500hp with the next update, can’t wait! But gm has been building good trucks since 2001, always improving the next generations! But yeah can’t beat the IFS if you wanna jump your truck! 😉 also whistlin diesel runs gm trucks to beat for a reason! They last!
