I've got a 2016 Model S and yes the inside trim could be a bit more premium. But at 259,000 miles, the build quality that really matters is how the car copes with age and mileage and I'm very happy with how the car is holding up. Towards the end of 2023 I spent 6 weeks in southern Italy covering just over 5,500 miles and the car behaved faultlessly. Zero creaks or rattles and is still great to drive, whether on the 130kph toll roads or up in the mountain lanes.
How many things have that 2016 model S had changed over the years? What I see is that alot model S owners have had almost all the can be changed, changed😂
Great to see that your vehicle is not a lemon. Tesla has definitely improved the build quality of their car but they need to control their cars better when delivering them. I took delivery of a refreshed Model 3 aka highland and the trunk was misaligned that it damaged the paint on the left corner. I noticed this on delivery day (my 1st EV) and could not believe my eyes. I obviously immediately notified the nice lady at the delivery center. What really disappointed me was what came next. She told me that I could refuse delivery or take delivery and log the issue via the app for service repair. I was speechless. I did read about Tesla's low touch car delivery but that they don't check their cars before delivery was a disappointment. There was another couple taking delivery of their highland and they had paint issues with their red vehicle. Thank god I took white. Long story short. Tesla need to improve the pre-car delivery checks and put a bit money into making it an experience instead of going around the car with a check list. Was truly funny to watch owners walking around with check lists.
Yes, that's Tesla way. If the car has faults, they rectify it later with a ranger visit or the car goes into the service centre. If you didn't know that before collection, I can see why you would be disappointed. Tesla's collection sites have no facilities to do such work. Most are just open car parks with a portacabin and they just fit the number plates there.
@@GoGreenAutos Now I know why Tesla have better margins on their vehicles. No customer service or quality assurance. Still happy with my choice but not getting used no indicator stalks. To many years of driving with indicator stalks.
I hope to do a EU trip in the Model Y at some point in the future. Something I've never done before. Fancy driving to the Alps. The furthest I've driven to is Bruges.
The issue has always been with early Freemont built cars; if you buy a Tesla you want one from Berlin and China. Berlin ideally as they have the best paint shop.
my 2024 model S just had really minor alignment issue with rear taillights Tesla service took care of and I love it and they’re very nice. To each his own on what you wanna drive I came from an M550. Quality is almost as good as BMW. Good video
Good video as always. Is this your new replacement to the Model-S? Happened to hear on previous before you transferred free supercharging. What did you decide in the end of the Model S?
In the USA there is a reputation that Chinese built cars have better quality. But appearance is only one factor. Durability of HVAC. Water in headlights /taillights. Rattles software glitches and dependability of service is a better indicator of real quality to me
My 2021 Y was one of the good ones I guess, I haven’t noticed gaps or anything major. I did have to screw in one of the bolts at the front, it was half way out from the factory. So far so good, no rattles or crazy gunks. But it’s been 25k mi, we’ll see at 50k. White is such a nice color.
Bought a 2023 MY LR built in Austin TX. I gave the vehicle a thorough look-over at delivery, and ever since. Verdict? The build quality is flawless to my eye. If there are panel gaps, mis-alignments, trim displacements, light and camera installations, or panel/glass height discrepancies, I cannot detect them with my very critical eye. I do get a passenger side seat-belt rattle sometimes, and that's my biggest (and niggling!) criticism. OK, one other gripe, more important: I live on dirt roads in northern New England, which means dirt and snow. The rear back-up camera gets quite dirty and is a constant chore keeping clean. Would appreciate a better rear-camera placement. Other than that? After 23K miles in my first year, the MY is absolutely freaking brilliant.
I picked up a Model Y Performance in December of 2023. There were still issues from the factory. Not as bad as my Model 3 Performance though. I found a few loose threads on the seat, a door ding, about 8 dust specks in the paint, scratches on the red calipers, adhesive on the glass, scuffs and scratches on the paint. Even on the new car it took a full day to buff all of the scratches out before bringing it in for paint protection film and ceramic coating. The new car feels much nicer than my Model 3 and is quieter on the road. The new Model 3 highland may go a bit further towards improving on the quality of the vehicle. It still does not feel as premium as the materials in our Lexus or BMW.
My 22 y perf has been to shop 3x. Once for clicking rear axle needing relubed and tightened. Once for rain soaking rear cargo area leaking through rear glass had to be resealed now its in shop for faulty seat air bag sensor being replaced. Panel gaps and unlined outside door trim. The 2023 y lr loaner I'm driving makes a loud bang from tear when starting off from a stop occasionally. Feels like I have been rear ended. So much for build quality. 😂😂 if I didn't love driving this thing so much I would care. But I don't. Myp is most fun car I've ever owned.
Got the exact same one on the 25th Jan. I would guess our cars were on the same boat. Ive noticed maybe the boot alignment isnt 100%, but other than that ive noticed no quality issues. Rear seatbelts have a habit of finding their way onto the plastic to rattle, just need to make sure those rear seats are reclined. Being an EV is so quiet, you hear everything. My fave features so far, the cabin heats up so fast, and the sound system is awsome
Book the side trim on the app it's worth it because it's so easy to change. They'll send a ranger to your house and change it under warranty. It's a 5 minute job.
What would be interesting is the ride more comfortable and less noisy? I read about owners taking their Model Ys apart to put noise reducing kits in. I waited to see if 2024 has solved this.
The suspension was revised in March 2023 (on China made UK models anyway, so Tesla staff say) and as for noise, its very quiet. It has double glazed windows all around and its quiet.
I am disappointed my 2021 model Y climate control system had to be replace at almost 3000 dollars because I was over the 50 Thousand mile and they can’t make a climate control system that last two and a half years very disappointed
@@GoGreenAutos There was a RU-vidr from Iowa; he had the Heater/Compressor gone on his Model Y 2021? 59k miles? And cost 3k to have replaced including having Had Tow Truck tow 70 miles for 720.00 Dollars... in December 2023. That is not Impressive! versus we used our Subaru Legacy 1992 = in the first 12 years cost us nothing but Oil Changes myself for less than 50 Dollars a Year. And the Timing-Belt was original until 2019! C'est La Vie = That what we call Quality and Engineering of Japanese Prides.
With my 2022 Model Y the plastic around the rear view mirror rattles. When it happens I push it up into the glass and it goes away. I saw another video that mentioned this issue and that guy got it fixed.
How good is a much better title. Panel gaps worries are for OCD types. We have 2 Y’s 2021 & 2023 both are just as high quality as any of the many Toyota’s I used to own. Fremont 2021 Austin 23 both are excellent. If people knew how much better Teslas are at 95% of what cars do they would take off their it’s not perfect so forget it glasses and make the switch to the obvious next step in modern transportation. ICE was fun while it lasted. My panel gapped 2021 Y upgraded performance is still undefeated out of the lights. The Only mass production car as fast as a Tesla is another Tesla. Safer, much faster, Incredible efficiency, Killer stereo, awesome seats. Still on my OG wiper blades after 3 years 76K miles. Teslas might not be for everyone but they are perfect for us☀️⚡️🔋 🚙
Got a new model Y in June 2024. Over anything but the smoothest of tarmac it has loud panel buzz from several places, the driver's seat creaks and there is a rattle from the back. In contrast my 4 year old BMW i3 has no creaks or rattles. For me, interior quality is much more about silence than the materials used so on that basis Tesla has failed miserably in my case ! Not sure if I should ask for it to be looked at under warranty?
Yes you should do. If they can find the causes of the noise, they will fix it. Where was your Model Y made? Mine has done 12k miles now and still rattle & creak free.
The "poor build quality" issue was real some years ago, but has now disappeared. The anti-EV, anti-Tesla, anti-Musk fanatics have had to find new topics to whine about. Life goes on...
Not necessarily true. I just received a model Y. I had a panel gap on the left door, and the top glass on my model y had a hairline crack through it. I had to take it to get them both fixed. They did fix it for free, at least .
As someone who has worked in the Tesla parts department, May the believing of this sorcery take you further into the dark realm of the service providing 😂 I wouldn’t even touch this car brand with their sketchy service. Just hype and a fad is all tesla is at the end of the day. Thought Nissan was bad and cheap but Tesla is a whole new level. Especially the American made ones.🙈 that’s OK though because as long as they come in my job is stability. At least Toyota knows how to do service unlike Tesla that does what they can to divert and not provide any service at all unless it’s something really major. Don’t have to believe me just waste your money and find out the nightmare yourself. Reminds me of the Apple days😂
We stopped dealing with Tesla long ago because of very low quality and fit-to-finish+ windows leaking rain water . Once they have your money, they don't care
Do you know if your radio retunes when it changes from regions? On a long journey I loose reception and was wondering if it should pick up the local transmission or re scan?
My 23 M3 made in Freemont, gaps were ok, wind noise in all windows at speeds over 40mph, had to fix it myself since Tesla could not sort it out. Top of dash sags at the middle since new. Paint quality was not that great, interior not a big fan of quality compared to similarly priced Toyotas or Hondas. Tail lights fog up considered to be normal, really ? The drive experience was great, nothing like it.
Yes, I think they look best in white. I did really want grey. But when I saw a white one and a grey one parked next to each other, the white just looked better. Plus the colours (grey, blue, black) cost £1,100 more!
I have a model Y from that very same batch, and as far as I can see it is absolutely perfect, I’ve not found a single fault. So much better than my model X from 2018 which is far from perfect.
Yes, the Model S has gone to Copart to be sold. I have recorded an update video, but I've been struggling with the editing, so will have to rerecord it. Hence why I'm now releasing the Model Y videos as I couldn't wait any longer. Tesla were doing an offer where you could transfer your free lifetime supercharging to a new Model S/X/Y and the timing was spot on for me, so that made the decision for me.
It looks in your video that there is still colour shading difference on the bumper panels? This has always been an issue, particularly with the white for some reason. My 2023 model Y has irritating high frequency rattles and creaks from the rear end, any ideas anybody? I was wondering if the rattle was the rear number plate mounting?
I've not seen any colour differences with human eyes. But using a digital camera often picks up those differences. However, this is very common as the painted panels are different materials, one metal, one plastic. I would say the Model Y is as good as the rest and best in that respect. Some cars its quite noticeable.
It makes sense that Tesla would get it right sooner or later. After all, it is the sister company of Space-Ex. And anyone who has ever seen the reusable, two-stage Falcon 9 rocket return from outer space and land safely realizes that this is one of the great engineering miracles in human history. But we will probably continue to hear about poor build quality for many years to come. There are a lot of Tesla haters out there, and probably a lot of legacy auto dollars going into continuing the bad press.
Tesla call it a 2024 model, hence why it has the "R" in the VIN, so that is why I call it a 2024 model. Any newer model doesn't exist yet outside of China.
The model year is the year in which the vehicle model was released and the model Y in this video was released in 2023. A new model is coming out in 2024, it’s called juniper. The updated model will go into production in China in mid-2024, according to Bloomberg.
@@valueaddedlife890 We get the Chinese made Tesla's in the UK, but we're not seeing the revised MY yet with the fabric dash, ambient lighting, black wheel covers etc, yet its 4 months since they surfaced in China. So I think it's highly unlikely we'll see the Juniper MY until sometime in 2025.
My Tesla Model Y has several quality issues. A couple fish eyes on the hood. Overspray between the doors. It is a 2023 model. I do however forgive them for these small problems. The car on the whole is quite simply incredible. The panel gaps are great though, even across the car. I am however very picky. My Ford and Pontiac I had purchased in the past were just as bad. It is the future. I love it!
Very good video on Tesla quality. Off-The-Wall question(s): How likely/useable are Tesla vehicles with limited or No Internet access? Rural areas of Europe & North America where there is almost no Cell Service/Internet. Is this possible? Not Updates/Not Maps/Not Entertainment. But a isolated signal Telsa. Thanks for any insight.
I can't answer that as I've not experienced no coverage. There are times when I'm driving through areas of no coverage in the UK which may last 5 minutes or so. But often the Spotify music keeps playing as its buffered enough (as long as you don't skip tracks) and the satnav keeps working. Teslas do a good job of keep roaming looking for a signal. There has been a recent issue in the UK with the EE network where cars would lose reception for longer periods, but that has just been fixed. If you want to update the software in the car, you need to park it within WiFi range and let it update (can take up to an hour).
I can't believe Tesla are shipping vehicles from China when there is a factory in Berlin. That's very disappointing. Hopefully it might change in future?
Its only because the UK is right hand drive and the rest of Europe is left hand drive. So the Berlin factory only makes left hand drive vehicles for Europe and Shanghai make both as more right hand drive territories are in Asia.

@@GoGreenAutos This isn't the 1960s. ICE emissions today are so insignificant it's not an issue. The MGUY channel lays out the stupidity of Battery powered vehicles, but what would an engineer know about it.
I like the interior. Super minimalistic and very nice to live with As for the shape, I never liked it, but sort of got used to it over the years and I don't feel it's too bad now. It is the worlds best selling vehicle, so it can't be that bad.
Wipers were turning on when Autopilot was engaged and they really cocked up auto wipers. But its improved with later over the air updates. I find the wipers work just fine since the last few software updates.
@@GoGreenAutos they updated my sw and cleaned the camera and it still does EVERYDAY. And the chime alert for green even turns on for red light as well. Camera goes blind sometimes, too. They have been telling me that the next sw update will fix the issues and the car is sitting in the garage collecting dust. They can't fix nor want to buyback. Money wasted.
outside looks like some big plastic car for kids and interior are simply terribly with straight lines and nothing in front of steering wheel and then that bigg tablet in middle and hypercheaply sterring wheel !! i must say that Chinese cars looks much more luxurios and are inside and outside too
No, Teslas aren't luxury. But its quiet, the premium sound system is amazing and software interface is the best. So while there are more luxury cars, I would still choose a Tesla.
Dare you to drive a Model Y. Don't do it. Are EVs different than ICE cars? Of course. Are they perfect? No of course. Advantages and disadvantages to both. But after driving ICE cars for over 40 years, I'm a convert. Do we still have an ICE car? Yes - wifey's. Do I drive it? Only to stop at a gas station to fill it up. What a difference in pure acceleration, and I can hear the radio clearly at any speed. I "fill up" in my garage for 1/4 the cost of gas.
Yes indeed, the build quality of Chinese cars has risen beyond recognition since 2014, and not just Tesla cars, I have been to China several times, and have experienced cars built pre-2015 and they are dreadful (own brands in particular) but today these same manufacturers are producing cars of equal quality to that of Europe, this is why we are seeing so many Chinese brands coming into the European markets, this will happen more and more as the years go by, we just can't compete with the cheap labour supply as in China either, so if we are not careful a lot of European brands will disappear unless governments open their eyes and make life easier for European manufacturers.

Not only was the paint without any discernible flaw, but the various panels formed a body of precision that was beyond reproach. Gaps from hood to fenders, doors to frame, and all the others appeared to be perfectly even, equal side-to-side, and completely parallel. Gaps of 3.5 to 4.5mm are considered word-class. I have one of those 2024 Y cars but a Berlin made with LFP from BYD and also we have 3 Model S from 2013 , 2014, 2015. Huge difference German made and 10 years of experience has made a great impact on the production in every aspect.
Ive had a 2023 Model Y Shanghai for 1 year here in Norway. Absolute the best winter car ive ever owned. -25C and no issues as long as you pre-heat with the app. Top notch build quality and overall a very good car. My third new Tesla since 2017. And the best build quality of them.
Good video. Very meticulous exterior examination for fit. I am on my sixth Tesla (‘10, ‘12, ‘16 . . . ‘22) and I have never had a complaint about fit nor finish. In this video, he talked all about the exterior fit, but not the quality of the paint job, which is the meaning I use of the word ‘finish’ in the context of fit and finish. It seems this owner uses one of the other definitions of finish, or simply ignores it on the exterior. On the interior, he does talk about the finish of the driver door aluminium trim.
While the actual technical construction tolerances may not be as millimetrically perfect as German ICEs, I must say that Model S is such an imposing, attractive design. Teslas will only get better, and their efficiency and charging infrastructure is excellent.
I’m sorry but I just don’t get the hype surrounding Teslas. I’ve seen domestic appliances with more style. The interiors are too minimalist and clinical and the build quality isn’t great.
There's more to it than this. Try one and you'll see. I don't see myself ever driving anything else than a Tesla now. They're so far ahead with the powertrain technology and software.
Just snagged a 2024 Y built in USA. I do have one minor issue. The seal between the driver’s side door window and the frame is ever so slightly not sealed properly. This creates a faint noise almost like your window is cracked open a bit when driving at higher speeds. Other than that nothing else is wrong and I’ve inspected thoroughly. Mobile service will be coming to fix it in a few days for free. All in all it could have been better but the overall experience was very good.
@@GoGreenAutos Yes, I know. The painted and water filling parts are hiding behind the plastic cover. And apparently these parts can rust even after one winter season in the areas that use a lot of salt to de-ice the roads.
Mostly what I've seen the Model S is built a bit better. But the others especially when Musk insisted on increase in production. The Quality control seems very lacking for what your paying. I find it funny Sandy Munro goes gaga over the engineering, yet never said one word on build quality. I know every factory has lemons that get released. But you'd think there should be inspectors to make sure if it has leaks into the rear signal/brake lights, or other issues, they should reject them and correct it before selling it.
We replaced our 2019 American built M3P with a 2024 Shanghai built YLR and we can definitely tell the difference in build quality, panel gaps and overall finish, both inside and out. We also have a 2022 Polestar 2 and that felt a lot better screwed together than our M3, just more solid, neater finish and a lot quieter. Where Tesla beat competition, no matter the age or build location, is in the tech, nothing comes close. With the PS2, the screen crashes randomly, loses connection or just fails to switch on. Saying that though, it's a complete faf to use the towbar on the Y compared to the PS2 where it's a button press to drop the hitch and another press to release it VS the Y where it's get a toolkit out, dismantle the plastic from the bumper, insert towbar, lock it in place...
I bought a MY almost exactly a year ago. Texas car. It's been great. Zero issues. The paint is not as nice--not bad but slightly uneven--as compared to my Lexus GX which has the best paint of anything I've owned. Even so, the MY is still very good.
I think they have stock in the UK so depending on your colour & model choice, you could find it will be just a couple of days. However, a new boat from China comes in once a month (normally in the first week of the month), so the wait isn't long.
@@trisknight9430 I'm not sure yet. I've not been tracking miles. But I will be looking at it soon and making a video on that subject. At the moment, I've been doing quite a bit of towing which absolutely kills range.
No, not missed anything. I've filmed an update video but struggled with the edit, so need to refilm it all. The Model S has gone off to Copart to be sold. I decided not to repair. Tesla were then offering free supercharging transfers and this offer came at just the right time for me. So I've not got this Model Y with free supercharging for the lifetime I own it.
Hopefully the click-bait misleading title will get a few Tesla haters to tune in and get schooled about the new reality when it comes to Tesla quality. It's only going to get better from here, and it's already very good. They learn quickly at Tesla.
The interior is laughable……cheap looking fake wood, a $10 foam steering wheel……the glass roof is unbearable in hot sunny weather. Everything on a computer screen not directly in front is unsafe, no Apple CarPlay, No clue why anyone would want one.
