Gary Sims did a battery test a while back, and high screen brightness together with a heavy load on I/O or the performance cores seems to drastically reduce battery life. I guess the battery life could range from 2 hours to 20 depending on the circumstances. A bit annoying since I think a lot of people would like a fixed number, like "I know I have 8 hours".

@@MarkEllisReviews Yep. Screens *are* the #1 battery drain on _any_ laptop in consumer workloads. From AnandTech's testing, though you may not like benchmarks or any of that, it's useful to know: "Displays are easily the biggest power draw in a laptop. A 15-inch Surface Book 2 draws 7.65 W of power just to drive the display at 100% brightness. The rest of the system only draws 1.43 Watts. On that laptop, the display consumes 5.34 times more power than every other component combined." At 100% brightness, the display consumes 84% of total power on the Surface Book 2, which has a similar high-resolution, high-gamut screen. @@MarkEllisReviews In fact, the M1 MacBook Air's screen brightness impact on battery life has been tested and your data perfectly aligns with Notebookcheck. The battery itself is not an issue; it's the screen brightness: M1 MacBook Air at 100% brightness = 8h 28m M1 MacBook at 150 nits brightness = 16h 00m You can double your battery life, if you move from 100% brightness to 150 nits (I'm not sure how many ticks that is, unfortunately). @@ikjadoon That is indeed a lot! The new screens that are rumoured to be in the new MBPs are supposedly drawing around 20% less power. Considering they are also rumoured to have twice as many power cores they could potentially last shorter during full load and longer during "average" use compared to todays M1 MBP.

Same here, but I’m on a pro. I do all my marking and paperwork, have a few tabs up and running. I also use flipgrid and edmodo for listening and oral presentation uploads with my students ( I got a message that edmodo is pulling a lot of energy, never saw that before) and go to bed around 2am/ 3am and end with about 30% battery. I don’t think I ever charged my mbp past 80% so I think it does really well. That 30% can take me through all my Teams meetings (3 or 4 hours) before dying and I can probably still get to do an assignment or after my classes. The battery life for me is insane. I love that even with less then 30% I don’t have to worry about it dying on me.

@@dcmsr5141 No problem. Yesterday I was on a 6h 30 minute Teams conference call with a colleague. I know I started with roughly 60%. We are on the ICT and Curriculum committees so we did a lot of screen sharing and document work during that call. Didn’t even realise I spent so long on that call. When I ended the call with her I was on 16%. I didn’t plug in once. I also had to screen record a video for a group I am a part of. That screen recording was 30mins long. I did it twice cause the first time I forgot to turn off my notifications. After those two recordings I had 10%. The battery life on the MBP is really excellent. I can’t speak personally for the MBA but I am certain you can get through an entire day without worrying about charging on the MBA M1 chip as well.

I haven't properly documented the battery and time, but when it comes to "everyday" usage such as browsing with an unseemly amount of tabs, RU-vid, some programming, messaging etc it just seems to go on and on forever. I can't say for sure, but it HAS to be way more than 8 hours. However, when I play World of Warcraft it will go through the battery much, much faster (no surprise). Maybe 4-6x faster or even more? Like I said, I haven't properly looked into it so I'm just guessing. LTT did a battery test recently and they found that the MBP M1 did significantly better when it comes to the battery. It shouldn't though as the battery is just slightly larger.

Your problem might be the brightness of the screen. My experience with my iPad is that it runs out way faster when I inadvertently had the brightness turned way up. When I use my MacBook Air M1 the brightness is normally around half brightness and you have to remember that is around the brightness Apple uses in their battery test. This will however be a mute point if half brightness is to dim in your environment and you did say you wanted to use it without doing anything out of the ordinary to preserve battery life.

...do you need max screen brightness when using a laptop indoors? I barely ever feel the need to go beyond 2 bars above the middle point and LCDs consume considerably less power at around half brightness (it diminishes at less than that, tho, you don't save as much going from 60% to 20% as you would going from 95-100% to 55%). Going from 95% on my T470p to around 60% made it go from around 2h battery life to just over 4h. at 20% brightness it barely gets to 5 hours.

I used my M1 for around 3 days without charging, but only probably 5 hours a day. BUT I had my keyboard brightness down pretty low, screen brightness at 4 or 5 from the bottom (bright screens hurt my eyes) and I only used Notion, Apple Notes, News, a Bible app, and safari for research. It could be the big mix of apps you are using and the higher workload (editing, video conferencing). I think I am a typical MacBook Air user (college work and the things I mentioned with occasional video conference). My opinion: I doubt it's your battery, I think you just have a high workload for this little computer.

Hi Mark, Fascinating video and for me it's nice to see a reflection of a typical work day which I can relate to, and it's nice to see reality vs the hype - Whoever decided that they would use number of hours watching youTube as an indicator of battery life was a marketing genius, as that is the only headline that you can remember. It would be great if you did a similar video for the new M1 Pro and M1 Max models - If you ever get to see this comment.

I also recently bought an M1 Air and was disappointed with the battery life. For me, switching to Chrome (vs Safari) made a bit of a difference but I like to have LOTS of tabs open. I do prefer Apple software on Apple hardware and have never really tried Chrome before but it's helped some with battery. *shrug* I wonder if people just "guestemate" battery life based on the first few hours, even your test had you down only 8% in the first 2 hours. I enjoy the videos. Let us know if you decide it's a faulty battery.
@MarkEllisReviews
@MarkEllisReviews 3 года назад
Thanks for tuning in! I don't think my battery's faulty, after further tests. It was a combination of the screen brightness (main factor) and Teams, I think. Just with the brightness lowered (still perfectly workable), it's giving me loads more battery life. The standby time is still one of the unsung heroes of this laptop, though - I just hardly ever have to worry about charging it while not in use.

The biggest thing I saw you mention was the brightness, I know on iPhone (or any other phone), having the brightness on 100% is an extreme battery drain in comparison with other settings, frankly I don't even understand why you'd want to have brightness on 100% unless you're outside and the sun is shining, anyway.. now I have 98% of battery and it's 12:25. Dear Mr Ellis, I just came across your video and liked the content. I subscribed to your channel. From what I heard from your I believe that one of the high power consumptions you experienced team from the screen brightness. I have a M1 MacBook Air top spec, for almost 3 months now and I haven't had such a short battery life as the one that happened to you on the video. To be able to compare things, I am a contract management consultant, on Civil Engineering works, which means that for each project/client, I have the following apps running : Autocad Email client Preview Dropbox Teams Excel Word Safari Reminders Notes This addd up to some Gb of files opened at the same time and, as I do not closed them down until the end of each consultancy, which lasts in every 2 months, it means that several projects are continuously opened at once on the computer. An important aspect is that I used the screen brightness 2 dots below 50%. And I have been experiencing between 13 to 20 hours battery life, so far. I couldn't explain the variation, but that's what has been happening in my case. Keep up the good work cheers

I have some constructive criticism for you Mr. Ellis, it may come off as harsh but it is well intentioned. You should drop any sort of apologetic, subservient, tippy-toe, walking on eggshells attitude that you may have in regards to analyzing or DARE I say critiquing Apple products in particular, otherwise you are part of the hyperbole problem. I do believe that there is a lot of deluded hyperbolic circle-jerking going on online in regards the M1 line's battery life and that cognitive dissonance that you seemingly experienced by the end of the video is perhaps indicative of you having drunk too much of the kool-aid. I've noticed some comments down below suggesting for example that you don't need to have "blinding" full brightness on and those types of comments are probably made by Apple apologist fanboys who will do anything to protect the integrity of Apple's self-indulgent claims. On my own MacBook Air M1 I just lost 10 percent in under an hour of RU-vid and web browsing with nothing opened other than Safari and the ever fluctuating Activity Monitor says I have 5 hours and 46 minutes left at this rate (90 percent atm, full brightness). Here's a video re battery tests you may want to check out. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_yLV07YVaJo.html Tis a pity that when reality strikes we have to feel gaslit because of so much disinformation going about. For my taste the present RU-vid tech review landscape seems like a grotesque caricature of what reviews should be, all the tech review people shoot and edit their videos in the exact same ways with the same walking on eggshells, technologically unsophisticated, apologetic shill attitude. Maybe you can aspire to more than mostly everyone else. "Think Different." Best regards.
