What I found most impressive was that he showed no sign of searching for words, as if he were translating in his head from some other language. Also, he evidently didn’t need to watch the interviewers for clues to what they were saying. He just understood the words and phrases as they were spoken. I suspect (can’t be sure, of course) that he was thinking in French. Not as quickly as a native French speaker, of course, which could explain the slowness of speech. After all, no one thinks quite as quickly in a non-native language as they do in their mother tongue.

Very well said. He's native in Spanish so the close similarity in the grammar to French will have helped him a great deal but it's still incredibly impressive.

@@analuciapsantos3649 i get that. But you're not on TV watching your back and some countries have a fast flow, others don't. Being bilingual lets you slow down. My example was spanish from Spain. Prononciation: absolument impeccable. Choix des mots: vraiment excellent. With Jodie Foster, definitely one of the best non native French speakers. I am very impressed. You really have to pay very close attention to spot tiny mistakes. The speed at which he speaks is totally fine. It's very much in line with his personality. Definitely not something that would make me think he's incomfortable or trying to find his words.

Viggo's introspection while speaking French may be more his personality rather than his focus on accurately speaking French. When he reworked the phrase to include "durer" I realized he was navigating between French, English and Spanish. I speak all three languages and I truly sympathize with him. French is challenging precisely because of how it relates to Spanish and English. I struggled for years recalling French vocabulary because I was searching in Spanish, only to find the accurate expression in French was a "shared word" in English...

He actually puts together three or four words at a time and speaks them very rapidly, then pauses to plan his next response. He is thoughtful about his responses, but once he's gathered his thoughts, he delivers them quickly. No, he doesn't sound Quebecois to me, and I lived in Paris for several years.

Just want to point out at 7:25 "réaliser" with the "se rendre compte" meaning is actually considered an improper anglicism by l'académie française. Nevertheless it is commonly used in some ways.

Yes. It's considered an anglicism but only in figurative contexts. Se rendre compte" / "prendre conscience de" / "s'apercevoir" etc. It's perfectly fine when describing concrete actions. Ex: Réaliser un rêve Réaliser un projet

Tbh, his slowness and big pause before he speaks is, imo, to formulate good sentences. He is extremely well spoken even for a lot of french people. I think that he puts a lot of effort to convey precise and interesting ideas. Which is tbh a really good thing. It's much better to take more time to answer rather than stumble looking for words that might actually not be what he wanted to say (this happens even to native french speaker). But yeah, he speaks better french than a lot of native french people. A really well spoken man
@karimkalonji1519

First of all Viggo is an amazing actor just for finding the right flow in verbalising his thoughts. When you speak, don't let anyone dictate your pace. You take time and take people in your rhythm. Every word he speaks out and the pauses taken give more thought and time to digest the importance of what you're saying. Speed in speech doesn't make you a better speaker. The time taken gives more importance to every word. The movie is a serious matter, it's about education. And it also puts national education in question. Even in my own language he inspires me how to give importance to the seriousness of the subject. Sometimes people need time to take in the content and he seems so involved in everything he does. It makes me understand how involved he is in the subject of the movie and in his character. He's so connected with the people around him. And he takes time to analyse the meaning of the question. The people on the set ask really difficult questions. It's amazing how I'm hanging on every word that's flowing out of his lips. He's so good that I even forget the man's native tong is not even French. I'm so amazed by him, that I can't stop talking, and I'm not even through the whole interview yet. He just gave the key. Taking time when you speak in another language. It takes guts to do that. Breathe while talking. But first you have to learn that in your native tongue. When you're hasty, you cut the flow on the wrong moments in your sentences. In French the liaisons are so important. The intonation makes people understand you said something important and your go down, you make clear that a new part of information is about to come right after so people are ready to surf on the next wave. So timing, rhythm, flow, connection between words, breathing and pauses are my conclusion. Does it make any sense?

As for the way Mortensen pronounced "chemin," which you commented on, considering it possibly a sign of a Quebec accent: I learned much of my French as a schoolboy in the 1960s in the northeastern United States. My teachers were Americans or French, and I'm not aware that any of them had a Quebec influence. I learned to pronounce the "in" sound the way Mortensen did in your video, and in fact I still pronounce it that way. Since resuming my French studies in recent years, I have noticed the difference in pronunciation of "in" and concluded that it was a shift in the general pronunciation of that sound in the French language between the '60s and the 2000s. Am i wrong to think that, or is it actually the case that I speak Québecois !?!

u might be right because i’ve noticed in françoise hardy’s songs (from the 60s and 70s at least) she tends to accentuate that sound more than i ever hear anyone do nowadays

I too was pretty sure that Mr. Mortensen had a bit of the Québec accent. Specially the way he pronounces his A,s with a distinctive drawl that gives out the sound...( awe.) You're spot on. The " *in* " sound is less distinct in France now than it was 40, 50 years ago. It's quite noticeable when watching old movies and news clips and comparing them with many present day speakers. To me, the " *in* " is almost at the point of fusion with " *an* " when I listen to some younger speakers from France. Exactly like " *brun* " and " *brin* " have become the same sound for plenty of speakers (not everyone, but an increasing number of Parisian/northern speakers). The same seems to be happening with " *e* " and " *eu* " as well. Words like " *que* " and " *queue* " are also pronunced the same by more and more speakers. In the end, (brun, brin, bran) all sound less and less distinct. Québécois retains the more distinct pronunciation for each but Vigo probably learnt French as a kid in the 60s, in a formal setting, and from older teachers who emphasised the differences between "in" "un" "an". He just sounds old school. His French is amazing.

Thank you for making this very informative video. It is very helpful for students of French like me and my entire class! My first language is Spanish and I studied English and French at school. I am not exactly sure as to what Viggo Mortensen would consider as his first language. Would it be English because of his nationality? I've watched his interviews in English, Spanish, French, Italian and other languages (the other languages being those which I could not understand so had to rely on subtitles). This is just my observation but he seems to always speak at the same rate and comes across as someone who is very thoughtful, in whatever language it might be. He seems very self-possessed and careful about what he says. One can only guess but his pauses are most likely related to content, rather than language. I can only dream of achieving his level of proficiency in French! I am not a glib speaker and Viggo Mortensen's calm approach to speaking is very soothing for someone like me.

'Quoi' is good enough for good friends or close friends, but here in this case 'comment' sounds less rude. I have a game with kids. When they say 'quoi', I respond with 'feur'. Quoi + feur = coiffeur, but most don't get it at first, then they probably say 'hein', which sounds like 'un'(1) and then I say 'deux'. After a while they'll be more careful and use 'comment'. It's just to tease them. Que dis-tu is like the most polite form there is. Only with friends I push it to the limit by saying 'taire'. It's very childish but it's funny. Comment + taire = commentaire. But people remember and be more careful when they use 'hein' and 'quoi' in certain situations. The same with 'ouais', which sounds way too familiar. Correctly pronounced it's 'oui'(yes). I respond with 'stern' (ouais + stern = western pronounced French way) It just works very quickly with kids. You should try these games, just for fun, when learning French to people.

Nope, I don't believe it. It wasn't extemporaneous. My guess is that his slow speech was the result of him reading from a script he had prepared and memorized in advance. Nobody except a member of Académie Française weaves the plus-que-parfait and passé composé as effortlessly as he did, not to mention his perfect gender agreement and command of an extended vocabulary. I'm sure he speaks French very well, but he doesn't speak with the spontaneity of, say, Jodie Foster.

Yes indeed, his French is impressive. It is better than that of many native French people who have lived out of France, lack practice , and have to search theirs words , especially those that they have never really used or even known when they were in France.. As for his accent it is excellent. The only way to know he might be not French is not his prononciation , but the rythm of his phrases, the same for instance as that of Jody Foster, another amazing French speaker. Both tend to speak a little too fast, with stops in betwwen that are a little too long, while a native French speaker who hesitates in their speaches t would tend to slow down their words, to avoid too long hesitating "euh... euh... " in between. But interestingly both are able to express their feelings in original, personal, interesting and very French words, and make little use of common hyperbolic cliché words like "great", "amazing", "cool" . or their French equivalents. who are too common.in both langages.. Sorry for my own English. I'm not as gifted as VIgo, obviously...

and to say "on avais pas du coca cola" is a bit less wrong than to say "beaucoup des parents" because in the first case that is a sentence that can be used in slang french and in the second it's just a mistake that will show you're not used to the language yet, and if you say "comment ?" or "quoi ?" when you don't understand something is basically the same thing, they are equally polite and correct but if you want to tell it more politely (for a work interview for example) you can simply say "excusez moi ?" then your interocutor will understand you didn't understood or didn't heard well and will repeat

as a french i can assure you viggo don't speak slowly enough in this interview to make it sound weird, french as a language, unike spanish for exampe, is not meant to be fast, it's a language of many "half-synonyms" with minor differences and choosing your words well is view as a better skill than speak fast or hiding your accent

Il a un léger accent québécois parce qu'il écoutait les parties de hockey à la radio de Radio-Canada provenant de Montréal dans les années 70, je crois.

C'est un intellectuel intelligent. Il me fait penser à une de mes apprenantes, d'origine asiatique. Elle est phénoménale. D'accord, elle n'est pas encore à son niveau, ça pourrait venir. Son ton est saccadé, comme le sien. Intéressant...

I'm from Quebec and I did get the accent to sound a bit like our own right from the beginning. When you made reference to it later I thought you had a pretty good ear! ;)

Besides it's subjonctif and not indicatif. But it so doesn't matter.

Nobody likes to make grammatical mistakes, but i think you would agree Alex arriving at a. situation where you understand everything that been said to you outweighs a few minor discrepancies in the greater scheme of things don't you think. ?.. That would in itself would be any language learner's main objective on the road to achieving a good level of fluency in the target language..

Quelle est l'urgence? J'aurais aimé entendre Viggo parler à son propre rythme. Il parle vraiment si lentement?

Lire les scènes au rythme original aurait considérablement augmenté la durée de la vidéo donc je ne les ai accélérées que pour des raisons pratiques. J'aime bien son rythme :)

Chemin = main = demain in pronounciation. But it depends where it is spoken. France, Belgium, Quebec, Switzerland or South of France.

Above is how I was taught by my French teacher to pronounce "le main" (like "demain"), all those years growing up just outside out Toronto, Canada. And then became horrified in my 40's to find out how the French actually pronounced it. I felt like I had been butchering the word for decades. Horrified. lol
