Bonjour !

I'm Alex, an English guy living in Montpellier, France. I help English-speaking intermediate-level French learners in order to take control of the learning process so that they can speak French with confidence!

I came here because my instincts told me that learning a language could be an enriching experience. It certainly is! Several years later, I'm still learning every day, and have become fluent in French by TAKING CONTROL of the learning process.

I believe wholeheartedly in a holistic approach to language learning, and if you let me, I will show you through my videos how my mind works, and more importantly, how to make sense of French grammar and the process of learning the French language :).

From now until Feb 6 2024, join my private community for intermediate learners wanting to smash through the intermediate plateau and speak with confidence. Limited spots: bit.ly/41NSrzJ

À bientôt,
Alex

Most if not all borrowed words from Japanese will have this mismatched sound and spelling: sushi, udon, etc.. will follow the same pattern. Notice that in Québec they apparently use the [y] sound instead.

@shryseaauthornim454
@shryseaauthornim454 3 дня назад
So being french it's true that some pronunciations can differ from writing to speaking, but your example is not the best one since the sentence can be said exactly how it was written. The difference doesn't come from reading but from the level of language (formal, current etc). Your speaking example would be written as " y a eu un 'ti contretemps" If you want a word written differently then "baignoire" should work. Usually "gn" is pronounced "nieu" but we read this word like "bainoire". Don't forget that north American and English people do modify the way they speak too and they don't only remove letters they add some as well or substitute them with others : I am going to take a shower >> "I'm gonna take a showa" or even without the subject and the auxiliary said : gonna take a showa

With Duolingo, I've been becoming frustrated with myself for making the same order errors repeatedly until the mistake is becoming fossilised = BAD news. Then with Duo, I only get the one correct response chance to relearn the Right way = NOT enough GOOD PRACTICE! This video's explanation and diagram started to clarify some confusion. I'm really hoping this download helps me start getting a feel for the correct patterns, so it just sounds or looks right!

Love your suggestions. I have yet to see l’Agence and Drôle but I intend to. Sambre has been on BBc4 recently and I series linked it. The subject matter is dark but it’s a great series if you have not seen it. I’m currently watching Tour de France unchained on Netflix it’s really good. Novembre 13 is also a Netflix show but again sad subject matter.

The main difference between [u] and [y] is the position of the tongue not the amount of lip rounding. The tongue is back in [u] and front in [y]. English does not have the contrast and the tongue position is often somewhere in the middle.

Good choices. I have watched two of them and will try the others. I would add "Au Service de la France" -- A Very Secret Service in English - a spoof of the bureaucratic spying world of 1960's French espionage agents. I recommend 2 Canadian shows: 19-2, a riveting police drama set in Montréal and C'est Comme Ça, que Je t'aime, a comedic take on the idea of two suburban couples 'breaking bad' in Québec's capital region in the groovy early 70's. I recommend using the French subtitles, especially if you're unfamiliar with Québécois dialect and pronunciation.

Magnifique vidéo Alex ! Something my Students find useful is building up a really good listening level by watching French tv shows, movies, RU-vid videos with the French subtitles on. By doing this, they are reading the subtitles as the video plays. It allows them to not feel pressured into understanding 100% of the French audio. Putting heaps of pressure on yourself to understand everything right away is a CRAZY expectation - especially if you can't speak French yet! Simply build up slowly using French subtitles and 1 video by 1 video, you will increase your level. 30-60 mins per day is all it takes to understand well in 3-6 months. Hope some of you find this useful, Rory :)

I like the fact that I can understand most of what the lawyers say, because their speech is slower and more formal and more like what I learned at school. However when it comes to the fast slangy talk of the police and the criminals, I'm back to relying on the subtitles.
