How Good Was Dan Marino Actually? 

Yeah, for the kids out there that just don't know, Marino was truly epic. I'm a raider fan and have no love for Miami, but I have tremendous respect for Dan Marino. Not winning the SB is just a reminder that it's a TEAM game. He very clearly wasn't the reason the dolphins didn't win it all. Truly gifted and a great career.

If Dan Marino was on the San Francisco 49ers instead of Joe Montana, he would have won 8 SuperBowl rings! 🏆💎

Don’t care what people say, but Marino is the best pure passer EVER!!! The NFL is a pass happy league because of Marino. We would never had Brees, Manning, Brady without Marino. He simply revolutionated the league. Great video btw.

He had a very strong arm, was insanely accurate, could throw with touch, could exploit the weaknesses of any defense (Including the 1985 Bears!) and despite being slow, he was rarely sacked because of that insanely quick release. - If I could choose any player in NFL history to start a team with, it would be Marino. Not Brady, or Montana, or Manning or Elway, or Rodgers, or Mahomes, or anyone else; *Dan Marino*

His 1984 season was not one of the best by a QB,It was far and away THE BEST season by any QB ever at that point!!

Any D-lineman from that era will tell you that one of the most immobile and slowest quarterbacks was also the most difficult to sack. His pocket presence was like a 6th sense and the release...that release is still unrivaled today.

84 was the best statistical year by a QB. You have to look at what his competitors were doing at the time. He was doubling what most QB’s were doing.

Mark Clayton was drafted in the 8th round in the '83 draft along with Marino. Mark Duper was drafted in '82

Dan Marino is the one reminder that gootball is first and foremost a TEAM game. No running game, I believe he only had one 1000 yard back in his career, NO defense, Dan Marino had given the Dolphins a lead in 38 of his games in the 4th quarter, only to watch his defense surrender that lead 23 times. In the playoffs, every team knew exactly what Miami was going to do, and Dan Marino still would pull it off, Only to watch his defense let him down again and again......

Damn look at some of those throws when he was in college,look just as good as some of his very best throws with the DOLPHINS!!AMAZING PASSER!

The best QB ever! I don't proclaim that without understanding there are 52 other men on that team as well as at least 8 coaches. I can say, if he was on the 49ers, New England might have caught up to their Superbowl mark. No one could throw the ball the way he did, until, Tua. His release after the snap is the fastest in the league currently, and they are just starting to come into their own. Seeing Dan hanging around Tua gives me serious goosebumps......

Marino was the only quarterback that beat the vaunted 85 Chicago Bears defense. If they'd managed to give him a running game and a legit defense, there's no telling how many Superbowls he'd have won. In later years, the Bears faced him successfully by keeping him off the field with their running attack. Marino noted before each of those games, "the Bears have a great defense, I hope I can be ready for them." Dan was the quintessential, class act, and a sweet guy that even as a bears fan, you had to love. The Bears were rumored to have floated a blockbuster trade deal, which would've sent Neil Anderson, and a few other prominent starters to Miami for Marino. Had that trade happened, the legacy of the 80s Chicago Bears, would've been altogether different and they would've had another 5 Superbowls and Marino would've gotten his rings. What if......

If the Raiders had drafted him in that time period, Marino would have at least 3 rings, they a great defense in the 80s. Bo Jackson and Marcus Allen in the backfield with him, Willie Gault, Todd Christianson, Mervyn Fernandez, to throw to.

Dan was simply great! His passing skills were epic. I hope TVD from Miami will watch some of his film to get his footwork techniques.

My family moved to Florida from England in about 89 and so I’ve been a Dolphins fan since. A lot of letdowns, but Marino was a shining light the entire time he played. He made things happen that had me and my dad jumping around the living room howling!

He had probably the strongest Arm ever, and he had the quickest release ever. He has the lowest sack rate ever to this day.

Boy, Marino in today's game with free running receivers, and QB protection rules......Dan was made for today's game.

Marino in today's league on a decent team would be a holy terror. His game was WAY ahead of its time.

I am of kind of rare opinion here,but I put MARINOS prime yrs of non playoffs squarely on DON SHULA,he had Dan,MARKS BROS,crash,but could not put a D unit together at that point to save his life and then when SHULA finally started drafting some studs on that side of the ball,OFFERDAHL,COX,BOWENS,VINCENT,Plus adding S LOUIS OLIVER,they had some PCs in place and u could just tell the main problem early 90's was they lacked consistency and the even bigger issue was they did not make in game or second half adjustments and that's what lead to so many shootouts along with the run game being lackluster at best,but imo I still say it was SHULA not getting rid of OLIVIDOTTI for another crucial stretch of MARINOS final Prime yrs,so that 8 yrs run which was MARINOS PRIME yrs there was NEVER,EVER a complete team around him however I do feel if they had a better DC in the early to mid 90's especially the 92-94 seasons they had a chance to catch Buffalo,in 92 they were at home in the AFC title GM as div winners and that is one of those times I'm saying,would have been nice to bail Dan out fir a game and at least keep it close and give him a chance to win it but ended up in a blowout,per usual!!

Even after all these years, I don't think I've ever enjoyed watching any football player as much as I did Dan Marino. The guy was just amazing and it was sad to see the Dolphins miss on so many draft picks that attempted to shore up the defense and running game as those were glaring weaknesses that really limited the team's ceiling.

Dan Marino was a very talented young athlete when he graduated high school. Could have been a MLB player, but he chose football instead. The guy had the quickest release of any QB I've seen to this day and he could throw the ball down the field whenever needed. Always hear people try to down play what he accomplished because his team never won a Super Bowl. That may be true, but trying to use a TEAM TROPHY to judge the talent on an individual player, is asinine. Dan Marino IS one of the Top 10 QB's in the history of the NFL.

Dan Marino is a great man. He helps children in need. That's what we call a superhero.

Saw him play in his first preseason game vs Dallas. Was clearly David Woolley’s quick replacement.

Apart of his physical skills, which were superb, he was also extremely competitive and would fight till the last second. I remember a game where he threw five interceptions in a row and somehow he ended winning it. He would get in the face of teammates DURING the game, but never point fingers AFTER the game, even if they deserved it. The Dolphins didn’t do right by him and were always a flawed team without a running game or a decent defense. He deserved at least one ring, but I’m proud of how he represents them now. Dan is the man, and will always be.

Marino was the Mahomes of his day. A lot of similarities between the two. Marino was never the same after he blew his Achilles. They didn't repair them like they do, today. After the Achilles, he was a lot easier to contain. Before that, he was as elusive as he needed to be to make the play, much like Mahomes. Throughout his era, I think the top teams in the NFC were just too good in the trenches.

My grandfather passed away in '83. He told me Marino and Elway would be some of the greatest to ever play pro football. 40 years later...gramps' picks were winners

Dan Marino was the greatest QB I’ve ever seen and it ain’t even close. There are so many of my Brothers that I would love to include in this but skin color aside, DAN MARINO was the GREATEST!! I’ve just never seen a man determine wins with only his ARM! Never had a great O-Line or Running Back and that alone puts him as my #1 and there ain’t even a CLOSE SECOND!! #MIAMIMIRACLEMAN

Watched his whole career and he was a fantastic QB, ring or no ring. Looking at his stats now don’t fully reflect how great he was. He was so far ahead of every one else in that era. In today’s game with every rule to favor the passing game, he would put up crazy numbers.

Duper and Clayton, the Marks Brothers. The Dolphins under Marino made the Shotgun a now common offensive formation. Later in his career Marino wore a visible knee brace that made him extremely slow and vulnerable in the pocket which is one reason for the constant shotgun position. It gave him a few more steps on the rush. Although he never won a Superbowl I would pick him any day over Bledsoe. Not saying it would be the wise decision but man I loved the 80's and early 90's Dolphins. 🏈

This dude was a one-man show. His teams were average, but man sure scared the hell outta defenses for years. Better than any QB today However, football is a team game, and January was not kind for most of his career. An all-time great regardless. He’d crush today’s NFL.

While I think he gets a bit too many excuses for his playoff shortcomings, him never winning a SB doesn't negate the fact he was a master of pocket presence. The fastest release of all time and nigh impossible to sack.

I was an avid Dolphin fan long before Marino came on board. Marino was clearly an exceptional qb that looked to be unstoppable but was. It was tough to watch the amazing Shula and Marino flaunt such skill but fail to really achieve much, despite being contenders for most of the 80s/90s. What I most remember is how temperamental Marino could be when things didn't go his way. I got the feeling that there wasn't great chemistry between the two (Shula/Marino) and often wondered if this was partly to blame for their lack of ultimate success. By the time Marino had settled down a bit, the team lacked talent in many positions and it just seemed like timing was never on his side.

Don Shula is said to have told his assistant coaches after seeing Danny for only two weeks of his rookie training camp, to start force feeding him the playbook, make him call all his own plays to get him ready to start. Dan entered his first game in week 6 and never looked back.

As a lifelong Jets fan, Marino was the guy I loved to hate the most when I was a kid - especially considering that the Jets were one of the teams that had passed on Marino only to draft a different QB named Ken O'Brien. Ken was a good QB, but never consistently reached the elite level of play that Marino did. I've always wondered how good the Jets would have been if they drafted Marino instead of O'Brien. Oh well. Woulda. Coulda. Shoulda. He was a great player and real Jets killer. I hated him (for killing the Jets more often than not) but respected the heck out of him.

The truth of the matter - and I’m a huge fan - he was never able to win in “biggest of moment” games….

Dan Marino was the equal of or (much) better than any quarterback who ever won a Super Bowl. He was the fastest, most pinpoint accurate passer the NFL has ever seen. And remember, through virtually Marino’s entire 17-year career, no other AFC team won a Super Bowl, until Terrell Davis joined the aging Elway & Broncos.

If I could give two SB rings to the two most deserving players it would be Dan Marino and Barry Sanders

Marino's super-power was his incredibly quick release - his accuracy was up there with the best as well - but the fast release allowed him to avoid so many sacks - he still took plenty of hits after getting the pass away - as this was back when defenders were still allowed to hit the QB and not draw a flag very often ..

He was the best QB to ever play the game, period. I know he has no rings - so what. He is miles better than anyone else that has ever thrown a ball.

Dan Marino was extremely reliable at his position. He's almost always had a top O LINE and outstanding receivers. When the dolphins went to the super bowl in his second year, he still had the remnants of a great 70's defense and running game to go with his passing accuracy, and power.

Marino was just like Aaron Rodgers great in the regular season and a choker in the playoffs. Name me some memorable moments he had in the playoffs. There are none.

For today's youthful NFL fans, he could throw easily as good as Rogers.

He never could get over the top, no matter how many yards he threw for.

He was other worldly his first 4 years in the league, but was more pedestrian by comparison the rest of his career after that. The decline in fortunes of the rest of the team probably had more to do with that than anything he did or didn't do. The Dolphins draft history post '83 was, a few exceptions aside, abysmal.

Anytime someone brings something up about Marino, I always think about Kelly up there in Buffalo. He’s an interesting story too, all those superbowl losses plus his home life, surviving cancer and losing his only son to some rare disease.

I think Ronnie Lott was a cornerback in SB19. The safeties were Carlton Williamson and Dwight Hicks.

How good was Marino? I had season tickets in Miami throughout his career, so I got to see him up close, and for me he’s the greatest pure passer in the history of the game. He routinely threw over 4,500 yds a year and of course had the 1 over 5,000 when that was unheard of, and a good completion % was around 57%. Only Montana/Young in the original version of Walsh’s offense had completion % in the 60’s and the 70’s which is routine today, simply didn’t exist. Marino in his prime under today’s NFL rules would routinely throw for over 5,000, probably flirt with 6,000 and easily have a completion % over 70%. While he was not mobile, he had incredible footwork in the pocket and was very hard to sack simply because he made his reads and got rid of the ball so quickly, with that incredible quick release throwing motion. And this was all without any running game after his 2nd season, when the entire world knew he was throwing the ball. The Dolphins’ offense during his years under Shula was very much ahead of its time, similar to Air Coryell. If the team had been able to give him a defense, they would’ve won several Super Bowls with Dan.

You give him Montana’s offense, and there’s no conversation about who’s the greatest ever. None.
