"But ironically, Yanma had quite a notable niche in GSC Ubers" Doubt it, but continue "where its ability to take on Lugia was as excellent as the price of this bridge I'd like to sell you" Why did I believe it
@@oscarmccormack1611 Kellen is joking, yanma had no chance in OU but he almost made his viewers believe that he had one in Ubers. The rest is to prove that its unrealistic.
@@oscarmccormack1611 - Also, there's a phrase (with variations) of "I have a bridge to sell you" which references a conman who "sold" the Brooklyn Bridge. When said to someone, the speaker is calling them very gullible.
"The original dragonfly pokemon" Just a note: It's still the only dragonfly pokemon. Despite the name Flygon and it being a dragon that looks bug-like, it's not a dragonfly. It's a antlion
Since when did Gamefreak balance, its this, dunsparce and quilfish, who just happened to matter because of good support moves and intimidate. It was just a really bad tentacrurl in gen2
1:23 - 1:50 This part is extremely ironic, cause in later Gens Yanma actually got banned from Little Cup because it was that metagame's equivalent of an Uber.
@@gotdamn4989 Three important things to consider. Firstly, a good movepool; It could spread status, attack with good coverage, and boost its stats. Secondly, good stats; Being a solo-evolution Pokemon who later gained a following stage because you were so atrocious without one has its perks, as is fairly fast and has great Sp. Attack, and its other stats are decent as well, meaning it's great compared to most other LC. And finally, the big one: Its Ability, Speed Boost. A.K.A, the reason Blaziken got shot up to Ubers *before* its Mega Evolution. This Ability is super busted, and can make even a crappy (in the grand scheme) Mon like Yanma into a potential sweeper. Combine there three aspects and you have an offensive juggernaut who cannot be touched and has decent utility to boot.....at least in regards to Little Cup, as Yanma is mostly a meme elsewhere.
@@microwave8931 I caught a Yanma with impish nature (+def, -sp.atk), and terrible IV values across the board. It's special attack is lower than it's attack. I guess the silver lining is the fact that literally any other Yanma I catch will be better.
Jack Kraljev If Pichu gets a LC analysis, then it needs a Smash analysis, also known as its autobiography titled, “From Melee Rags to Ultimate Riches.”
In my opinion Yanmega was one of the Pokémon who REALLY deserved a Mega. Having it turn into a giant Dragonfly Dragon would’ve been really cool; and with the Dragon type to replace the Flying type because y’know..DRAGONfly.
Adam Shepherd Just because they’re a Japanese franchise doesn’t mean they don’t know what certain species are called in different areas. I very highly doubt that they don’t know that Yanmega’s a Dragonfly. No need to try and be a smartass at 5:00 in the morning 😌
Is it weird that I get emotional over these videos when it's a Pokemon that did better than might be expected? I feel so proud of them, like, "You tried so hard, and look! You did it, buddy!"
There's a defining role of Yanmega that was left out in this video and that was being used in tandem with rain teams as a counter to opposing weather. I used to mess around in UU or lower most of the time but when I wanted to ladder seriously, rain with bulky Yanmega and Azumarill was my most successful team of the year. With its dualSTAB's being perfect for removing water resistances, Toxicroak and opposing Ludicolo after speed boost as well as Giga Drain which was left off the popular moves list- with Yanmega's 86/86 physical bulk stats and Speed Boost you could freely invest the rest of your EV's into Defence requiring only enough speed after a boost to counter specific scarfed threats. This would protect you from priority moves except for Vacuum Wave which is 4x resisted, and stay on the field with your boosts while threatening the majority of Rain/Sand teams, as well as allow you to run Life Orb safely. Leftovers and Focus Sash were also viable depending on your setup. Yanmega was an incredibly destructive threat with a variety of sets that would leave a hole in your team if you predicted the wrong one. The only thing holding this Pokémon back was the omnipresent Stealth Rock.
I feel like whatever person/people they hire to make Dex entries are just random strangers who have no idea what Pokémon are. Just “hey look at this creature and come up with a neat fact about it”
Yanmega is one of the stronger Bug/Flying Types out there. Speed Boost, great Special Attack, pretty solid overall. Not the best, but far from the worst. Oh, and it’s shiny is really good to the point where I’m not sure which color scheme I would prefer.
Yeah i mean its an effective sweeper, but in a less common way. Others uses dragon, fighting, ground, meanwhile this speed boi is plunging holes by buzzing and air slashing
@@Pr1est0fDoom Well Scyther's kind of been power crept now, but at least not too long ago, the combination of high attack and speed considering the tiers it fell into paired with Technician and the ability to hold eviolite made it a legitimate threat.
Imagine an episode which finally features Gen 8. It'd be like: "I'd say something about Magmortar's viability in Gen 8, the only problem however is that he isn't in Gen 8"
This is such a cool family of mons. I dearly wish it got hurricane, and that bug/flying wasn't such bad typing. Thanks for the consistently great content fsg
1:31 Oh yes, the good old "Joke Clause": Pokemon that get banned from competitive play because they are SO bad they guarantee the win by making the opponent laugh too hard to play.
Fun Fact: Yanma and Yanmega share many traits with Murkrow and Honchkrow in their competitive journey Yanma and Murkrow were pathetic in their first two gens Honchkrow and Yanmega struggled in OU but absolutely shredded UU, thus Banning them to UUBL Gen 5s power creep made them drop to UU Gen 6s power creep made them drop to RU but were quickly banned And in Gen 7 Yanmega stays in RU while Honchkrow is stuck in RUBL And Murkrow got Prankster in Gen 5, so that led to some gimmicks in VGC. But nothing of that sort for Yanma You're Welcome :)
In my area we had weekly tournaments and I remember fondly being the first to run yanmega as my opener. Ability was speed boost. Move set was air slash bug buzz dark slash and protect. I fondly remember a dude laughing at me in the start of the match and being quiet minutes later. Easily one of my all time favorite pokemon.
I'll never forget using a Yanmega in a 3-on-3 with NateWantsToBattles YEARS ago! It swept his Gengar, Alakazam and Mamoswine with ease! The one I was running had Modest nature, Speed Boost (of course), holding a Focus Sash and knew Bug Buzz/Air Slash/Protect/Giga Drain! Still one of my favorite mons to this day!
Some kid was trying to catch a yanma but Jessie caught it and Ash tried to say that she stole it but, it was wild and had no owner so, she technically didn't steal it. Its a funny episode
My favorite bug. What to give it to make it more viable? Quiver dance. Might be too OP if you can land a hypnosis, but it's fun to imagine the tinted lens fueled steamroll that ensues. I get that it's intended for butterfly and moth mons, but if a plant can get it for some reason, he's just begging for it.
Flying, bug, fire, and ice types: why is stealth rock so good Gen 8: here’s some boots The Pokémon: yey, now we can com in and not take- Gen 8: also here’s the snap so barely any of u will get to use these boots The Pokémon: :(
Finally, my favourite mon gets its own episode. I love this mon for being the only bug flying type not being trash, its special attack is pretty good, coupled with tinted lense and choice specs then not a lot of mons can take hits from it. I love watching all these bulky pokemon lose 80% of their health to this pokemon.
In gen 4 Smogon I like running a Speed Boost + Substitute set. With Bug Buzz, Air Slash, and HP Fire/Ground, it's a solid mon once the walls and stealth rocks are gone.
For Yanmega to really be stronger, it needed a boosting move to make it a sweeping/wallbreaking threat. It gets Roost which would pair well with Calm Mind to patch its awful bulk, and Tinted Lens lets it ignore its shallow movepool in favour of just running STAB Bug Buzz + Substitute. Quiver Dance of course would be insane, as it could just run Tinted Lens all the time like Vivillion and Venomoth do.
I mean, Ancient Power is weaker and has a lot less PP. Unless you like gambling on a 10% or need a different Hidden Power type then it's a bit questionable.
I’ve always wondered what made gamefreak change hypnosis’s accuracy from 70% in Diamond/Pearl to back to 60% in Platinum. Like, why do that? Was it an error or something?
Yanmega is my all time favorite bug type, & it’s actually the Pokémon that got me to start liking bug types in the first place. I’ve been playing since Gen 1, but never used bug types because for one, I thought they were bad(they were, but by Gen 3-4 they were MUCH better), & I just really dislike bugs in real life, except dragonfly’s, which I’ve always loved. Yanmegas design is what made me want to use it, but once I realized how good it really is, it cemented it’s place of my all time favorite bug type! Mine has Speed Boost, with Detect, Bug Buzz, Air Slash, & Giga Drain. Detect to activate speed boost like you said, Bug Buzz & Air Slash for its powerful STAB moves, which Air Slash works even more with its ability to make opponent flinch, which goes amazingly with its ability. Giga Drain is mostly there for coverage, but I usually have it hold a focus sash, so if it’s HP doesn’t go all the way down, it can heal itself, maybe even all the way back up, so it’s Sash doesn’t break. Also, Giga drain helps with its 4x Rock weakness. Tinted Lens is a good ability, but Speed Boost is just so much better on Yanmega. If it’s not holding a focus sash, which would usually be because another team member has one, I give it the Bug or Flying z move, depending on what the rest of my team is.
There's a set I know Use endure and weakness policy plus speed boost to get fast and dangerous. The rest is up to you, but it's usually giga drain, air slash and bug buzz
Ya know that one day i was crazy for myself "huh, tinted lens? Meh uncool, speed boost is better" Proceeds 2HKO mega steelix and (iirc) mantine with choice-specs tinted lens bug buzz HOLY GOD MFNSIRBAJKS
Gen 2 had such cool bugs when I think about it. There isn’t a single one from that Gen (excpet Ledian) that I dislike. And then they gave Yanma an evolution just so it could finally be good. Awesome.
I remember people were also saying what about Dragonite...because of its Mega Stone would of been DragoniteNite. Think about it all the Sudo Legendaries got Megas except Dragonite 😢
You should do a first impression on the gen 8 meta, looking at the items and Pokémon and guess how the meta will shape Mainly looking at items like the heavy boots and Pokémon like G-Darmanitan
@person person Swirlix is banned for belly drum shennanigans, IIRC Wingull got Drizzle, which is obviously too good for LC, Aipom is banned because technician boosted nonsense made him into the LC equivalent of a speedy Scizor, and Cutiefly is banned for Quiver Dance nonsense.
I don't know what the circumstances were in that match but it shouldn't be possible. The following calc gave almost every advantage to Charizard so I have to believe that MChomp had taken a spdef drop already. Charizard is given perfect IVs and MChomp in the calc has 0 IVs in HP and SpDef. 252+ SpA Charizard-Mega-Y Heat Wave vs. 0 HP / 0- SpD Garchomp-Mega in Sun on a critical hit: 224-264 (68.7 - 80.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
He's not doing it for now because of the multiple forms. I'd love to just hear about the Alternate form of Giratina though and do the origin form later
I’ve actually been using something really silly in gen 4 Ubers/Ag with the yanma. With a 95 base speed tier and compoundeyes boosted hypnosis, it can work like a discount darkrai that can whirlwind and pivot with u-turn. Really silly, still awful, but pretty fun!
Does FSW have a discord server? I’ve always wanted to get into multiplayer Pokémon on the semi serious / competitive level and would like to start after finishing sword/shield but I have no idea where to begin when it comes to learning. The only reference that I have/use right now are these videos and the smogon website. Is there any kind of discord server where I can talk with people about learning the game and improving myself?
I love how nobody used ancient power especially since that's what it needs to evolve and it has better power than hp rock. Sure, its pp sucked so that's why I used it as a lead. It dealt with some hazard setters and weaknesses but I was basically taking the chance of getting the boost proc then baton passing out (when it was still legal) whenever it was close to death.
Hey, does anyone know what happened to the ferrothorn video? I swear I remember seeing there was a how GOOD video on it but never got around to watching it and now I can't find it
I need a Gen 8 replacement for Yanmega. It must: Be either a Bug/Flying Type or have the ability to fly Have over 100 Base Special Attack Must have either Speed Boost, Tinted Lens, or Frisk as its Ability Must be able to learn at least two of the following three moves: Bug Buzz, Air Slash, or Ancient Power. Any Suggestions?
