Pokemon recently added a 19th Type - the Stellar type - and players thought it would take over the game. But somehow, Stellar is one of the worst types - here's how it happened.

Ultimately its them trying to reinvent the Gigantimax hype which is just them copy-pasting Mega evolutions into Dynamax. Where even that goes as far to have some `special` dynamax moves and/or animations tied to them to add to the fluff bait when they either are gonna be wastefully stupid on asset recycling by getting rid of it by the next mainline game or just use it as a `testing grounds` to shove it back in later when they get to a certain remake and call it an alternate reality, just like how ORAS got mega evolutions because it was a different place from R/S to further get away with the whole rainbow rocket gag in US/UM. Im very sure plenty of people are just sick and tired of them constantly axing previous mechanics that may of been present for even less then a year for some of them, even having way too many pokemon that had to bank on the gimmick including older pokemon to boost them into relevanacy and constantly force players to abandon previous team comps, where they arent even hiding the fact they will drastically buff/nerf abilities/moves/pokemon each generation like its a MOBA, which further takes away the appeal of childhood favorites. At this point, Pokemon is the same as Yugioh in more ways then one, they try to huck in new gimmicks in so often, they get lazier with it that they ignore previous balancing reasons and break the game with the stuff they originally were against adding in. Thought since Pokemon would of likely hard-capped only having one specific gimmick avail to a player at a time if they actually LEFT the older gimmicks in, instead of removing them each version. It would of then result in players figuring out exploits with older gimmicks and newer pokemon that could ruin the game, especially the competitive scene when someone could take a particular pokemon, use a newer gimmick and then it turns them into a unstoppable beast that just sweeps everything. At this point, Pokemon just needs to `reboot` into a Classic generation where no more special state gimmicks are added in (basically would be like Gen 1 thru 4 for the most part) and kept vanilla and then have a different sub-generation where that one has all the gimmicks and just have it where the older gimmicks return via post-game completion to let the competitive players have freaking fun, just like how alot of the hand-held console games handled it with stuff like battle frontier and what not.

@@artur6912yes, but the real problem was when SuMo didn't add any new ones and pushed them to post game "just because". Honestly, I wouldn't mind having a new gimmick if they double down and make it a new staple mechanic. Breeding and Doubles were originally gameplay gimmicks themselves, but GF kept those. Why not the same for battle gimmicks? That would help more people actually care about them.

@artur6912 Месяц назад
@@Jw87563 They didn't put any new ones because it requires relatively way more effort than other gimmicks and they put them in post game to not overshadow Z. @Jw87563
@Jw87563 Месяц назад
@@artur6912 megas could easily have been made available for all mons anyway by making a "generic" mega stone that gives a flat 20+ stat boost except HP and changes nothing else mechanically. Visually, it could have the Totem aura to show it changed and it would take your mega slot. That, and since GF was inevitably going to get to the point where it's not feasible to include every single mon, they could easily shuffle around what megas are actually available every gen as well. The generic stone would of course be a constant so GF doesn't necessarily need to give a mon a mega, but still let it participate and leave room for a possible true mega in the future. A true mega would be the more drastic and "optimized" form while the generic stone is more of a stat pump to help out mons who are _almost_ good or need that small nudge to be usable. That, and it could actually be more helpful than their actual megas. Heck, Mega Chomp was worse than normal chomp because of the speed drop, so the generic stone would have a niche.

In competitive, it doesn't do much. When doing raids, it works differently since it's damage boosts are unlimited, allowing Pokémon with coverage to use it at will. You could also use a Pokémon with Contrary in these raids to use Stellar Tera Blast, where you'll constantly put out guaranteed super effective damage no matter what whilst buffing your own attack. But even from there, it all feels kind of underwhelming. My two proposed changes are: 1. Stellar boosts do not run out, but you need to alternate between types. If you used Flamethrower, you will not get a boost on Fire-type attacks until you use an attack of a different types. OR 2. Stellar overrides defensive properties, effectively removing both your resistances and weaknesses.

@Eclipsed_Embers
@Eclipsed_Embers Месяц назад
one slight counterpoint here is that the Dragon type itself wasn't what was powerful, it was the pokemon that happened to be Dragon type. for a long time (gen 5 was the first point where they started to move away from this but it really increased once we hit gen 6, by which point Fairy type had already been added) Dragon type was basically reserved only for pseudo-legendary and legendary pokemon (from gen 1 to gen 5 the only dragon type pokemon that weren't legendary or pseudo-legendary were Kingdra (gen 2), Vibrava, Flygon and Altaria (gen 3), Axew, Fraxure, Haxorus, and Druddigon (gen 5). 8 pokemon split between 5 evolution trees), pokemon which naturally tend to be on the more powerful side of things. offensively Dragon type has always been pathetic. it's only strong against other Dragons, it's resisted by Steel, and since Fairy's introduction it's had no effect on Fairies. defensively it wasn't exactly a type to write home about either. 2 weaknesses (itself and ice), 4 resistances (fire, water, grass, and electric), 0 immunities. Dragon type was nothing special, it was just slapped onto a lot of very special pokemon, even now it's still primarily slapped onto naturally stronger Pokemon that would probably do just fine without it (one could even argue that since Fairy's introduction many of those strong Pokemon would be better off without the Dragon typing).

@@Eclipsed_Embers Dragon was always a really, really good type by resisting four of the most common special attacking types (okay, three common plus my personal favorite, Grass) and only having two weaknesses (itself and Ice). Give typical early game fodder like an early bird, three stage rapid evolve bug, or regional rodent the Dragon type and even with the same low BST it's better than it'd have been as bug, normal, or flying type because dragon is just a better type than normal outside of Gen 1. Dragon needed a hard counter, because Dragon type attacks were almost never resisted (Steel types only). Between being neutral offensively, lots of powerful moves from gen 3 onward, and being a defensive juggernaut only outpaced by Steel and Ghost, Fairy was a necessary addition to the game.

On the "I don't know how to convey that more clearly" point surrounding tera and STAB boosts, this was probably something for the editing room. Just having text on screen saying the thing you're having trouble conveying isn't helping you. Show it visually.

@ElecManEXE Месяц назад
I don't think they ever really intended it to be a great type competitively. I think they added it mainly for raids, given that the battles with Terapagos are basically story raid battles and play off the same in-game phenomenon that raids do. Stellar is pretty fantastic in raids. The attack boost isn't limited to one per attack, and of course tera boosts are much more important in raids because of the shield mechanic. Which means dual-type pokemon can use both their STAB types rather than choosing just one, thus letting you use dual type pokemon in more situations. Since you always know what pokemon you're fighting, its much more rare that you actually want your tera to change your defensive type for a raid, because you should be using a raid pokemon that resists the opponent well already. You don't generally want to wait 3 turns (or often more) to tera to something better defensively. Just pick something with proper resists from the start. In fact, not changing your type can be very good in raids to not lose important resists a dual type might have, as many dual types have very useful resist spreads if you known in advance what you're fighting. As a current example, the Meganium raid going on right now. I was using my Contrary Malamar, which is neutral or immune to all of Meganium's attacks with its normal Dark / Psychic type combo. But if I were to tera Dark type, then I'm suddenly weak to Body Press. By changing to Stellar type I could keep my neutrality to Fighting while still getting a tera boost to my Dark attacks.

It would be interesting if, in some sort of theoretical game that included gimmicks past and present, Tera-Stellar Tera Blast (or a new move that is always Stellar) did bonus damage to any Pokémon in _any_ special form (Tera, Dyna, or Mega) or that was holding a Z-Crystal. In a meta increasingly written around various super forms, having a type that’s dedicated to “super busting” could be very interesting indeed.

I didn't find anyone else bringing this suggestion up, regarding the "fixing Stellar" segment, but I was wondering: why not have it so Tera-Stellar boosts every move by 25%, and _without_ losing the Stellar boost after using that move type? That was the big sticking point with it, right: that the boost was gone after using the attack-and that boost wasn't even as good as traditional Tera, anyway? Couldn't maintaining that minor boost during the Tera make it a more considerable option? For one, it would decomplicate/declutter the mechanic a little. There's less rules around it to deal with, basically. It's effectively solidifying Stellar's presentation as a "jack of all trades, master of none" type, with the caveat of Stellar being super-effective against Tera. Stellar is basically all the types, but its lack of specialization means it won't be as impactful as the rest of the types-that would be an easy enough explanation for players to grasp and remember. It's also why I suggest buffing the non-STABs to a non-ephemeral 25%, because that's simple enough to explain, too-that it boosts every type, but only _half_ as well as other Tera types. Plus, it gets rid of the rule stating "every attack type gets buffed, but after you use a non-Stellar attack in Stellar mode, that type loses the boost." I honestly think that rule needlessly complicates the Stellar type. This then means Terapagos won't be the only one to maintain the non-STAB boosts in Tera mode, which is another rule gone-basically, streamlining the Stellar mechanic. Next, giving Tera-Stellar a persistent half-boost means certain players might seriously consider it for offense if they care more about making _all_ of a Pokémon's moves better, rather than focusing on one attack type being the strongest. It's kind of like the Expert Belt or the Wise Glasses in that way: their effects are nowhere near as powerful as Choice Band/Specs, but they're still available for any player running a Pokémon with a varied spread of attack types, that cares more about just having somewhat better attacks all around, without worrying about being locked into one option. So, in terms of offense, Stellar would not be a particularly strong type, but it now becomes a choice for players who like keeping their options open-it fits their play style, basically.

Well yeah pretty reasonable, or honestly you can go the other way and make the values extreme so it's a hail Mary one use type of effect. Not to the level z moves were, but enough for it to at least be anti terra tech (which it kind of if you squint hard enough already is)
@neoqwerty
@neoqwerty 28 дней назад
Another possibility would be to keep the messy "loses the stellar boost when used in Stellar mode", but to TRANSFER IT to defense: you lose the offense of that specific type, but you gain defense on said type in exchange. It'd mechanically work similar to Kecleon's Color Change or the Porygon line's Conversion(2), with the extra type boost transferring from attack to defense when you attack with it. You'd still lose the attack boost, but gain something to make up for the loss. Possibly could also have like... being hit by a type you have that's "stellar-defended" flipping it back to the attack boost instead of the defense one, which would make multi-hit attacks get through stellar-boosted defenses, since the first hit triggers the swap, and you get un-defended damage for the rest of the chain. (though that part would definitely need more finagling)

I also saw some people speculating that it work similar to Shadow-type moves in Colosseum/XD and i thought that was most likely to happen (why else would they specifically say Tera Type instead of just Type?)

From my PoV, Teracrystalization is a good mechanic, it gives more Spice and plays for types and mons normally not included without it, and most important, ALL MONS can use it, not like megas. Now, stellar type... For me, this type wanted to be a "super ???" type, but got mutated by todays standards, basically turning you into a contrary normal type with the ítem which buffs super effective moves apllied to all attack move types. Not a wise move tbh, it breaks tera mechanics by itself.

Honestly a way i'd suggest to make Stellar type better if they make Pokemon their native type is that instead of it being unresistable by everything and not resisting anything, you instead make it super effective against everything but also make it weak to everything, just the ultimate glass canon type, "take me out or get taken out instead," energy, to balance out Stellar type always being super effective you'd just make stellar type moves weaker in general so unless you have S.T.A.B the super effective damage isn't hitting nuclear levels like other moves equivalent to it... likely a dumb idea but it'd be interresting.

Stellar's at least a great type for dedicated Tera Raid battlers like myself; keeping both of your types when you terastalize is really helpful for certain battles (e.g. Stellar Sap Sipper Sawsbuck being immune to all of Trevenant's raid attacks, Stellar Krookodile walling Gothitelle, Stellar Corviknight keeping its ground immunity, etc.), and it's nice to use on 'mons you only get once in a game, like the Loyal Three or the newest Paradox 'mons. Suppose it also helps that the boosts last for the entire duration of the raid and not just once-per battle; the more I think about it, the more it seems like Stellar's moreso meant for coop raiders than competitive PvP-ers.

16:10 I don’t think it actually does, because once I had terastallized Terapagos and it was hit with a super effective fighting type move. So either that was a glitch(entirely possible) or it just isn’t entirely stellar type. Also, tera blast and tera starstorm still count as normal moves in relation to the tera boost given by stellar type.
@kobiemartinbose6126
@kobiemartinbose6126 Месяц назад
Terapagos looked insane when it was first introduced, a neutral normal type to start with base stats that are evenly well-distributed and becomes even bigger with terastallization turning the already bulky terapagos into this large monster of stats… or so it seemed at least. Terapagos is a failure just like the type it introduced, a large clump of stats with a whole lot going on excelling in nothing particular. It’s tanky yes and possesses an ability that can be crucial for counterplay for upcoming monsters like Koraidon, Miraidon, Kyogre, and Groudon while dealing strong boosted tera starstorm damage… but it requires terastallization, a game changing gimmick under that can change the tide of the match in a single turn.
@SmubFinger
@SmubFinger Месяц назад
The only time I've ever seen Stellar outpace a normal tera is with Serperior, a Pokemon who you really wouldn't ever use in doubles. In singles it's contrary ability giving it a +1 boost to both offensive stats every time you click a 100 power move that can't be resisted wasn't too bad, especially with all of the coverage it likes to run like dragon pulse. Leaf storm further taking advantage of the tera and of contrary made Serperior a surprisingly funny set up sweeper, but still not the greatest pick for a team.

Hi so theoretically if they put the stellar type on a Pokemon as if it’s an actual type (not as a teratype) say a pure stellar type Pokemon would that Pokémon be able to be hit? Or would it be a thing where everything is not very effective?

Wolfy now that Scarlet and Violet has been out for some time you should do a video recapping tera as a mechanic. How it compares to other mechanics both in a matter of how fun it is to use and in how impactful it is when compared to the previous mechanics. Also a recap on which pokemon have benefited from it the most and which have been underwhelming, as well as the most frequent ways it has been used. Personally I really like tera and I think it fits really fluidly into completive Pokémon as a short burst of momentum or a long term walling. Thanks for the burst of videos lately!

So basically, the Stellar type has a similar mindset to Shin Megami Tensei's Almighty type: Nobody has resistance to Almighty (save some RARE exceptions) and there's only one (type of) move with Almighty Damage. Almighty is more often used by the developers as a shortcut to ignore resistances (like with Persona's All-out Attacks) than as a proper type. So it doesn't even appear as a type statistic in-game.
