How GPS Works 

this is an explanation of what gps is, not how it works.

A GPS receiver shows where it is. It may also show how fast it is moving, which direction it is going, how high it is, and maybe how fast it is going up or down. Many GPS receivers have information about places. GPSs for automobiles have travel data like road maps, hotels, restaurants, and service stations

You heard about the Gallilao system being launched. Like gps, has transponders built in also. The safety features this brings are amazing! And FYI, you usually need 4 satellites for an accurate fix. 3 to triangulate the 4th for temporal differentiating.

Why are aircraft gps signals over oceans only visible in the northern hemisphere? In the southern hemisphere, as soon as an aircraft reaches a certain point in the ocean the gps signal disappears.

GPS isn't COMPLETELY open to the public, they use two different frequencies to broadcast the code, the P signal and the Y signal. The P signal is entirely open to the public, but the Y signal is encrypted. Interestingly, the carrier signals for both of the codes can still be used for some advanced GPS techniques, so although we can't read the Y code, it's very nice to have.

This is a terrible video. All it does is explain what GPS is and what it is used for, but does practically nothing to actually explain how GPS works beyond a couple of sentences. Misleading title.

What happens to the gps satellite after its expected life? Does it get nudged, just enough to get it off gravity or is it pulled back to earth?

at 1:11 mark that is what i was using just 2 months ago with comcast. We have upgraded to iphone 4s since then. Good to see the old symbol unit again!

With successful launch of IRNSS -1g satellite today, India also has entered the club of elite nations having their own GPS. IRNSS- Indian Regional Satellite Navigation System. Having a coverage of complete South Asia, Tibet, Central Asia, Afghanistan, parts of Iran, Eastern Arabia, South-East Asia, Indian Ocean Region.

The killer-app of drone delivery will be an automated system of ever larger drones that allow a system of consolidation for items to be delivered. For example, say I want to deliver a pen around the world, to a friend I'm chatting with online. I request a drone to a designated landing spot (a platform near me). A drone, appropriated sized is sent. In this case, a pretty small one. It hands off the pen to ever larger drones, eventually perhaps a supersonic drone. Reverse at other end.

The current version is a lot more accurate than you're being told. Consumer receivers are gimped to keep them from being as accurate as the military versions.

I believe that every convenience created is a trade off for independence and freedom. We won't have to try at all to find our way around, but at the same time everyone is monitored and more and more power is given to centralized government. Sometimes ordinary people disagree with certain policies, laws or protocols, and any attempt at breaking away from it is getting harder and harder to do when everything about you is monitored, recorded in some database, etc.

it already works. it is older tech, but with more accurate accelerometers, better batteries and storage mechanisms, it should be easy now.

Just putting this out there: Yes, Half Life 3 actually has been confirmed. Multiple times, in fact. Valve took out a copyright on the name and on their website they accidentally and temporarily released the crew names of the people who are working on it. So you know, spread the word and stuff.

It takes awhile to calculate your position to centimetres and over an hour to calculate to millimetres. Accuracy takes time.

What's about the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) ? I use this all day long for my Survey Work! It's even more accurate because i uses the Glonass an all other positioning systems too! So i can determine my position to about 1cm ! Yes i'm a geomatician!
