We took a field trip to the largest green roof in New York City. Then we imagined what the city could be like if all of its roof space was green.

@@Whatsername868 hi, sorry for the delayed answer. I unfortunately don't know if it is a highly profitable business or how much money it makes, but I am certain it is a safe long term business if done right. What I tried looking into but didn't follow up on was to figure out if it was possible to get government and/or bank deals to fund you and/or your clients, in order to encourage the installation of green roofs. One of my dreams was to see a world in which every single building which could physically hold a green roof, to have one on, especially in cities since that's where it has the most impact. I didn't take the time to analyze it so I guess it's worth looking into. Good luck!

My cousin in Britain just did a green roof. I wonder why people aren't getting incentives/funding for this. We need hundreds of rooftops of milkweed. I know it has been done already for one butterfly nearly knocked out from habitat loss. We have a very serious problem with accepting wildlife. All those "creepy crawlies". ☹

I read the article on disadvantages to green roofs. I just want to leave two points. As far as homes in the States, make sure you have engineered for the additional weight and that the contractor knows how to correctly build a flat roof. P.S. They aren't actually flat. The last point is more and more insurance companies are doing drone surveys and cancelling your homeowners policy if they don't like what they see. So we as a community of green citizens need to make sure we are supporting legislation that keeps this from happening.

Are there structural changes necessary for most green roofs? the weight of the soil, plants and especially holding the water that was initially designed to just run off seems significant.
@rebeccarinaldi7181
@rebeccarinaldi7181 7 лет назад
I would imagine if NYC roofs are prepared to take on the weight on snow storms piling on each year they would probably be up for the task? But that's just my guess, I don't know.
@ProjecthappylifeNYC
@ProjecthappylifeNYC 6 лет назад
Hi there. Green roof systems are tailored to match the structural capabilities of the roofs their on, and plenty of extra weight capacity is left over in the design for snow load and people, etc.
@moeringsusa5809
@moeringsusa5809 5 лет назад
You first talk to the structural architect and then you calibrate the green roof to match the structural capacity of the building. There are options within the range of 15lbs/sqft to 200lbs/sqft depending on your needs. Plus, there are new Detention based green roofs on the market that perhaps weigh a little extra but do so much more for the stormwater management in a city. see www.purple-roof.com for ideas.
@BenDowney
@BenDowney 3 месяца назад
Actually, this is one of many reasons the other buildings don’t have green roofs. The structural load is more than snow because it’s a year round weight, you must account for the plants, The soil, and the water weight and maintain your designed in safety factors. Also extra precautions must be designed in for additional water leakage problems and root invasion. Plus they are expensive and difficult to keep irrigated and alive. The roof has to be intentionally designed as a green roof. Also buildings are rarely built with gravel roofs anymore anyways, the heat issues can be easily addressed with the much more standard white TPO roofing, not a green roof. It’s very disingenuous of NPR not to address the costs and challenges associated with green roofs. There are good reasons why most buildings don’t have them. The few benefits don’t always outweigh the costs. Sometimes they do, and sometimes the plants all die because of disease. If you don’t count the cost for the maintenance, the structure, the roofing, and irrigation then you are only giving lip service to a green roof and it will likely fail. Who’s more at fault the one who doesn’t build a green roof or the one who does but kills it with neglect, or the one who wastes profits that should go to payroll or better products to restore a dead green roof? Finally, a green roof does little to reduce a buildings carbon emissions or heating and cooling loads.
@mrlepercon

Knowing that the roof has a certain load limit I wonder how often they'll need to haul down the excess bio mass.

Anyone know anything about the green roof trays to contain the plants? One example is at 3:04 in the video. Pretty exciting stuff.
@moeringsusa5809
@moeringsusa5809 5 лет назад
Trays are not really a smart option to manage stormwater. think about a sudden rain flush, and then water gathers to find a way out (dry soil will resist water initially). The 10-30 seconds that the water gathers, allows it to find the crachs in between the trays to escape. Testing in GRD Laboratories found that 50% of the water escapes this way, and that is terrible because a) the plants NEED the water, and b) it just let go of a huge amount of stormwater when it matters most, which is during massive storm events. have a look at www.greenroofdiagnostics.com (GRD) for more information, or check out www.purple-roof.com.

@dvklaveren
@dvklaveren 7 лет назад
That's not very helpful. He wants to know how much it costs, that doesn't mean that he's cynical about it; just curious. :P A green roof costs around $15 to $20 per square foot. So, if they saved $3M per year, that means that they could implement 0.6M square foot of green roof each year. So, to cover New York with green roofs, which is 1B square foot, you'd have to invest $15B up front to make that happen. Judging by the acreage of the Javits Center, the square feet is 290.000. That means that the costs of construction were between $4.4M and $5.9M, using commercial prices. Considering the scope, though, it is probable that the project was on the cheaper end of that range. So, the project will start making return on investments in less than two years, which is a significantly short period for something to make a return on investment, in terms of most cost-saving measures like solar panels and the like. Not to mention all the other benefits. It's a no-brainer, I think.

a lot of these ideas are just concept-stage and barely scrape the surface. They are being promoted by people who dont really understand the science involved. Some real-world highly useful options include solvent-free paints eg Lakeland Paints - which are solvent-free, VOC-free, Non-toxic and actually edible ! Surely, paint solvent is a tiny concern you might think ?? Not at all - paint emitted 24 MILLION tons of greenhouse-gas solvents into the atmosphere last year and every year (WHO 180 et al) - and these solvents are on average 20-50x worse than CO2. So - if you really want to do something to help counter global warming you could do a lot worse than switch to one of the VOC-Free paints out there.
