I escaped a cult a few months ago. When I was an obedient member, I was considered "spiritual" and was well respected. The minute I found my voice and started calling out the lies, I quickly became "carnal", "rebellious", "arrogant". Life is so much better now that I escaped but it's been an eye-opening process. People only like you when you agree with them.

Avoid the groupthink pressure, don't join a group. Read opposing views, listen to others but stay a free-thinker and make up your own mind. Doesn't have to be a 'forever' decision. With age, experience and hopefully, maturity, even we ourselves may change our minds about some things, but not because others bully us into it. Some times your gut is your best advisor. Be brave.

Hello Gwendolyn, it seems group thinking can be very strong in the family. mine is so into catholicism, they are always willing to talk about it, breakfast to supper, and I see a fair amount of hypocrisy with it, I lost a wife of a year and 76 days which due to things not being done due to sudden illness, I had a very large life change. No 1 in the family has ever asked if I'd like to talk about things, after 17 months, its not gonna happen. One sister was always telling me I need to be going to church and doing the communion bit, but tho she does talk the catholic talk, not too much the catholic walk, or somewhat off the well-trodden path at times. My ways or attitudes appear to be all wrong, so missing the mark on things. Is this religious narcissism?

I am so “group think” resistant. I’m not loud and verbal against “it”, but I move forward in my own way which has always worked well for me. My two kids are the same way. We all three think “outside the box”. We are kind of happy-go-lucky people who are generally well-liked, but when we get into “groups” and voice a point or turn away from a point, we are ostracized. We are used to it now, and we enjoy the people who like us and let go of those who don’t like us. Sharing this with my kids. 👍🏼😁

I started a new job about a month ago. Getting kinda 'shunned' already. I'm a Jewish woman and wear a Tichel so I stand out. This is a very Christian small town Midwest community so they "pick and scratch" like chickens. They ask lots of questions and either sneer or give me that "stink eye" sorta look. But, I shall stand my ground and hold to my faith....and pray for them. But, my blood is starting to boil because I heard a few off handed comments about Jewish people and snickers. PLUS You always know when you walk into a breakroom and people go silent and won't look at you or even say, "Hello"....they've been gossipy about you.

We were a young couple with two young children and a large house payment, and, even when I explained to her that we couldn't afford to do this, she berated and belittled me to the whole family , saying to me, "Maybe you need to get a JOB!" I said I wanted to be at home to raise my children. In my experience, if you find yourself in opposition to the group thought you might have to let it be known that you can be nasty if need be. Especially if the goal of the group is a stupid end. The more irrational the end game the more you become a target if you are too nice while doing what you think is right. This is because on some level the team knows it's intentions are doomed to disaster as much as you know it but they can't admit that for fear they won't be accepted in the group. Don't become a scapegoat!

In other words, the singer went thru a season where he saw all life only in black and white. Life is either one of two things, etc. and his mind was very fixed and later on, he had an epiphany, light bulb went off, etc. and now he sees life (the colors) differently. he now knows that things aren't always what they seem. I never or rarely was one who desired to be a part of the crowd. I stood out because I told my friend, I was no longer smoking & if you & so & so don't like it, you can take a flying leap out of my life. I was @ a Christian Camp & they wanted me to join up with their group, & while I was a camp counselor, I told them no, I'm comfortable where I'm @. They found a way to corrupt the situation & found something to point the finger @: thus Judging me for not being like them. They wanted to put my separateness into a bad light. Thus taking the focus off of that which was bad, their group think issues. I think that they didn't like it because I wasn't going to conform to the group think, idea's. Jesus was a Non Conformist, he didn't conform to mans corrupt ways!! ~Thx for another awesome video!!

How many times am i going to be amazed at how much i do not know about narcissistic behaviors?! Haha i say that with a light heart. TY again, Dr.C for bringing up a new topic that makes so much sense. “Groupthink.” I had never heard of it but it makes so much sense. It’s the whole “do as your told and don’t ask questions” mentality.

That's so spot on and your clarification on the subject helps to galvanize the desire for independent thinkIng despite the scorn (and ridicule) from my 'close' majority. Thanks for all the freedom and understanding I gain from each of your videos. And thanks for all the additional resources you make available. 🤗

Thank you for the insightful explanation, Dr. Les Carter!! I had been in every situation in your description and up to now I have difficulty to have a healthy and reasonable conversation with almost all of the narcs. The truth of the matter is we humans need to grow spiritually, and life is not only about material stuff. The inability to grow is the set off point for me to stop all the dealings. Have a great day, Doc, and God bless!!

There always seems to be a timely topic for my own personal struggles. This is from 2020 but this past week I found myself apologizing for how a sibling interpreted my surprise. Thank you for helping me to come to realize it's not my fault they feel guilty or ignorant. It's a struggle and I appreciate your wisdom and want you to really know that you have really helped me battle the negatives in my life.
