Ed Calderon was a police officer in Baja California, Mexico, for 12 years, working in counter-narcotics and organized-crime units in the northern border region. During this time, he witnessed gun smuggling and narcotics smuggling.
He has since worked with members of the US Army, and Mexican and United States intelligence service agents, doing security consulting. He specializes in anti-abduction training, edged-weapon training, and executive-protection work.
Calderon talks to Insider about the practicalities of firearms trafficking across the border. He discusses the point of sale in the US, methods of smuggling, and how the weapons end up in the hands of the Cartels. The Mexican government has estimated that 200,000 firearms are smuggled from the United States each year.

Massive amount of respect to Ed Calderon and others who speak on here about drug crime in particular, especially when calling out law enforcements and governments for their corruption. These people have been in that trade and know and are known by others presumably still working it, so the threat to their lives must still be very real, so this is a level of bravery above and beyond what most of the rest of us will ever encounter.

There is one story that sticks with me , I knew this guy from El Salvador in the Army, he was in the Army after moving to the US in his mid teens with is family, his father had been a federal officer, his father was third generation . One day he came across an attempted bribe and had to quit that day as his son told it, the problem is this, you do not go looking for the cartel bribe it is just made , in this case not even in person, you have the choice take the money and they own you, do not take the money and now you are threat. I can not imagine the nightmare of trying to be a good cop south of the border.

Edit to add; The ATF pressured FFL (licensed Federal Firearm dealers) to make sales to young women that had no idea what they were buying. I talked to one female that had just been convicted of buying 3 .50 caliber rifles to give to her boyfriend to "walk" them across the border. The FFL refused sales and was threatened by our agents to make the sales anyway or face retribution. She was sentenced to three years and she stated that he got eleven years. So it was more than just watching purchases being made and following the smuggler. Just like the FBI/CIA put pressure on Twitter to censor news stories. There is corruption on both sides of the border and in our foreign terrorist task groups that influenced FB, Twitter, RU-vid, and others to ban questions about certain politicians' electronics.

This will give credence to Ed's story. I live 90 miles from the border. Years ago, my brother had a friend that did gunsmithing as a side hustle. One day, I went with my brother to his friends house, where I met a 'friend' of my brothers friend. This 'friend', as I found out later, had 'commissioned' my brothers friend to build 6 AR platform rifles, giving him a large amount of money as a deposit. I'm not the smartest person, but I figured out real quick what this guy was about and where the finished rifles were going to go. I wanted no part of this guy and couldn't put enough distance between myself and this 'friend', whom, thankfully, I never saw again. As a side note, my previous job was in a service industry that had me going into people's homes. I've seen firsthand on at least three occasions, evidence of people smuggling in the homes, one actually had two ladies in these 'hidey' spots (I walked in on them watching T.V. in this 'hidey' spot, believing it was some sort of storage room, just not for storing people). If you think for a second the U.S. government isn't complicit in this, you're a fool as it became a case of "nothing to see here" as a result of reporting it.

Let's not pretend like if the U.S. stopped the manufacture, sale, and purchase of firearms and ammunition that it would look anything like what is happening in Mexico. They are getting their guns from the US and not the other way around. Do not be discouraged into inaction by what you've seen happen on our Southern boarder. If we stop the sale, manufacture, and purchase of firearms and ammunition it will make it harder for those cartels to get ahold of new guns.

Got arrested at the Tijuana border when I was 18. He's not wrong when they say they do find ya straight outra high-school. Like 6 of my classmates and multiple kids from the junior and following senior years were also busted in either drugs, people, or running money. But yeah the x-ray wasn't always accurate at the time, and (can talk about we all did our time that were connected, and are out) but yeah he was border patrol who got me involved. It's not worth it to everyone who thinks it's easy money and can get away with it, stay out and stay up.

I go to TJ a lot. The mexicans have an x-ray machine at San Ysidro, they don't look very hard at your paperwork, and only make you fill out the FMM about 1/4 of the time, but your stuff is always x-rayed, and they usually open my suitcase. I've never seen, nor have I ever been patted down but I wouldn't walk across at San Ysidro with a weapon.

@@ibaconbits8997 In the trump era to mitigate some of the migration the US gave mexican officials a bounty of like $50 a head for every undocumented migrant traveling through mexico. Biden never repealed it. There's youtube videos on this subject. They never used to be that tight with the FMM but now when buses go through checkpoints and if you don't have your FMM or it's expired they take you to jail. Figure in the fact that mexican jails are for profit as well, they make like $10 a head per night for every inmate, you can languish in those cells for quite some time. One german travel youtuber spent a month in a mexican jail because his FMM was expired and he thought it was 'no big deal'. Essentially if you're not going any further south than Rosarito you'll be fine, but if you're on the toll roads and your paper work is checked you'd better make sure your FMM is in order. As for having your bag checked, Mexico is what is left of one of the great ancient civilizations and despite it's troubles is still one of the great countries in the world. If they don't want people crossing with weapons that's their prerogative. And Mexico being sticky about the FMM is from pressure from the north.
