My grandpa told me these about handshakes: 1. Never raise your hand to shake someone older than you if said person has not initiated that first. It's disrespectful. 2. Always point your hand vertically, never inside down, that means you want to dominate, never inside up, that means you're submissive. Vertical hands are always neutral and, in the case of someone offering you the two above, you force them to meet you equally. 3. Never offer a limp hand or as they say, don't shake like a fish. A strong solid grip with a locked wrist represent fortitude of character. Of course, when shaking someone and he/she presents a fish shake don't break their arm, meet them with an appropriate level of resistance. 4. Don't break a woman's wrist. 5. And finally, never shake with a sweaty hand. Nobody likes a sweaty hand.

I cant stand looking people in the eyes, or face just irks me, but as a way to not be looked at as a liar I try to focus on a non assuming part of the face like the spot between the eyebrows or the tip of the nose. I still get anxiety but it is much less, so therefor easier to deal with.

I think handshakes also help you remember people. It has to do with an automatic counting of the shake. If someone were to write down the same word or phrase 3 or more times, you are more likely to remember that word or phrase. If you are to have not only eye contact with someone new, but physical contact, and then there is a 3-4 count as you are looking at them and learning their name, you are more likely to remember that person. More likely than if someone had introduced themselves with a single wave.

Eeww I hate hand shakes... I'd never get any positive reactions... going up to some stranger and touching their hands... I don't know where those hands have been and when the last time they've been washed. Shaking hands gives me anxiety and grosses me out. I don't want to fucking touch people. Ew.
@MsWannabeGamer
@MsWannabeGamer 10 лет назад
Same here. Most people have sweaty or dirty palms, since they're constantly touching stuff. Some don't even wash their hands after they use the bathroom and then they proceed to shake your hand. Nope, nope, nope. Often they break your hand just to assert their dominance. I don't know what the hell is wrong with those people.
@lilyt99
@lilyt99 10 лет назад
If it grosses you out but you are at an office party or meeting, I'd suggest you do your best and firmly shake those hands, and avoid touching your face until you can wash your hands later. It's always okay to wash your hands before you eat, so it shouldn't be a huge deal if your hand gets a little dirty. Door knobs, faucet handles and light switches are filthy anyways, so avoiding hands won't help you entirely. I know there are really gross people out there, but you don't want to come off as a jerk in a first impression. I worked in the construction industry and the dirtiest people actually are often the ones that say, "I'd shake your hand, but it's dirty right now."

Wooow tl;dr Look at all the judgement cast down from a strange older man on the internet! I'm more 'fem' like in my personality? That's probably because I'm female. :/ "Men don't say things like" that's an outdated sexist remark if I ever heard one. I'm hoping handshakes will be outdated soon as well. Primitive gestures...

Blake Kilcrease Even if he (or should I say SHE) does not like shaking hands, I am sure she does it anyway, because well, like you said it is rude not to but for some It is weird shaking hands with someone you do not know. It is just personal preference.. You don't need to say shit about people not having a good male role model in their lives, that's so rude and insensitive! What if this person you speak of had a dad and that dad died in an accident when he (she) was a child and lost their father and after that, they had no male role model. Not to mention that most people do fine without a fucking father, seeing as though they'd rather get drunk then spend time with their kids. You have no right to be a smart ass piece of shit! Of fucking course you are a CEO because most people who are, are crappy human beings that the rest of us civil people want to see get hit by a bus! Just the honest truth! What do you know? Why don't you now tell us how the universe and solar system works? because most geniuses are not exactly the shaking hands, touchy touchy type(Introverts... the majority of the population are Extroverts, it's not the introverts fault their are more of you!).. Anyway, I'd definitely rather bow than shake hands, some people are just grossed out by touching weirdos with slimy hands, well that is how it feels if you are a clean freak. Sometimes you just need to see it from someone elses perspective for a change and get off your high horse! Also, you sound like a sexist, no wonder men always feel like they have to hide their true selves from society because of old men like you, this is the new age, we don't need that bullshit here. Just because you had a dad, not everyone had a perfect upbringing. Wow, you really are irritating.. I would probably know all this just by one shake of your dirty hand XD hehehe ;)

I feel handshakes are weird. I've never actually started one due to that. It makes be feel out of place, like I'm in some foreign land. When someone does it, I'm caught off guard and do this wimpy handshake. But If I ever were to start a handshake, I feel my grip would hurt. IDK. This is why I hate handshakes, too much thinking about a simple task.

A strong grip on a handshake always impresses me, but also creeps me out if they don't lean back and chill after the handshake. Those are automatically OUT! But even people with a too strong shake, if they stand back and keep calm, they are okay to work with me.

I hVe never cared for hadshakes because i did not grow up with them (ofcourse i knew what they meant and i had done them once or twice) but really, holding a firm grip is gives the sign that you are more confident to the other person, but for a person to do that, they have been teached that a firm grip = confidence.

I def think that a good handshake changes the dynamics. I recently went to a "dive bar" with my husband to watch a friend play in the band. I knew this was not going to be my environment and there would be many "friends" of my husband introducing themselves. I normally just smile and say hi but on this occasion, I decided to be observant and if anyone was introduced to me I would shake their hands. No matter what. It was interesting to see the outcome. It could have been my own self-respect at play but it felt as though people were more respectful with some individuals being so uncomfortable that eye contact was minimal. I would not be able to cover my entire experience of this experiment here but as a doctoral student learning how to "observe" and "research" it was interesting.

The left hand grip, demonstrated at 2:23, used to insult me. It meant the person shaking my hand didn't have time to acknowledge me. But later, I spoke to someone who shook my hand that way, as he described himself as "beneath" me. I realized he didn't have the confidence to conduct himself on a gentleman's level. Holding out his left hand was like a dog giving me it's paw, or a monkey expecting me to take it for a walk. Now, whenever someone offers their left hand, I feel sorry for them.

Of course I believe it, there's so much we give off with our nonverbal communication and even the intentional actions (handshakes) can leak information we had no intention to share. I also feel they're over-analyzed wastes of time too, though.. People have a tendency to learn a minimalistic amount about a subject, and then preach it as if it's gospel - completely ignorant of the subtleties and exceptions within the topic they're speaking of. For instance, the argument that those with a limp handshake are always lacking in self-confidence and are more neurotic can be true in many cases, but there are of course exceptions. If someone uses their hands for something important (case in point, musicians) they will usually have a very limp or weak handshake to protect their hands (and likely resent you more than the average person if you gave them the over-compensated 'vicegrip') - yet I've seen many people instantly fail to consider that and just write them off as 'Nah, neurotic/untrustworthy/not confident' or whatever their half-baked research told them that means. We must always keep context in mind, but that being said when you know what to look for a handshake can be very revealing.

Got a common scientific knowledge bomb for you: Education level is correlated with intelligence. Intelligence is correlated with health. Health is correlated with hand grip strength. I'm glad you pointed out that the associations you drew were correlations and not causation, but that didn't stop you from strongly implying that people lived longer because they achieve a higher level of education, which is ridiculous.

***** Sociologists, psychologists and linguists all study human behavior/history. Neurology is the true science that will eventually replace them all, but until we are advanced enough to connect them theoretically, the three are as much help to themselves as they are to the guidance of neurological research. They currently often work together with neurologists because knowing a neurological reaction doesn't mean anything if you don't know what the human reaction associated with it means. Without the knowledge of human behavior we would never know what the neurological pulses mean, only how they happen. So needless to say, I disagree. Physics used to be to mathematics what psychology is to neurology now. Not theoretically connected, but definitely correlated.

We all typically hug over here(even when first meeting someone). It makes it less of an awkward/formal greeting, and 9 times out of 10 even when the person is caught off guard from it they seem less anxious and more comfortable talking/opening up afterwards.

Imo the most important part of the handshake is that both of you enter each others personal bubble (Or space). Otherwise people tend to be more apprehensive / defensive. Just my experience :) _Plus I never know what to do with my hands so if we don't shake they subconsciously move to the arms crossed position_

I actually don't judge people by their handshake, mainly because I am too busy worrying about them judging me.

One of my friends and I actually greet each other palm to palm instead of a handshake. We also wrap our thumbs around each other's hands. I wonder how people's secret handshakes correlate to them?

It's funny they made a video about this because I always shake hands when I meet someone new. But today someone said that your handshake determines a lot of things, didn't belive it till today.

I'm actually a bit disappointed. I thought this was going to be about styles of handshakes and how they reveal what era you were born in or something.

While I don't fully appreciate the meaning and history of hand shaking, here in the US it's become an expected and highly important act in job interviews. Social customs can be so tedious :p

It developed naturally. Along with other nonverbal communication action. Developed into a cultural act. It arose and continued because theres nothing to use instead. Like a more formal version of a hug. It says know me im here and its also a great opportunity for eye contact which is very impirtant non verbal communication. Think about it. If youve never heard or experienced a hand shake and some stranger walks up amd grabs your hand to feel you amd looks into your eyes what might they convey

To truly know someone, one must first observe them do every possible action without them knowing they're being watched then become that person. The second one's a little more difficult...

I hate handshakes. Why would you want to rub your hands together? You don't know where their hands have been.

Its respectful to assume someone you meet has proper hygiene, they are trusting you as well
@TyroPirate

But you know probably* know exactly where they have been... for an example, let's assume shaking a guy's hand in an office setting: he probably touched a pen, papers, his computer,face, penis, whatever is in the kitchen, your own hand since you are shaking, etc. everything else you can't think of is probably negligible...

If you were to take a look at the people you sit on the bus with for example, everyone is generally completely minding their own thing and all but ignoring everybody else but for the occasional manditory contact. This resultant 'distance' between people is very much occurent nearly everywhere at all times to some extent. A handshake is a nice and clear gesture to establish an approachal between two individuals, this gesture, I feel, is born out of equality and mutual respect. What objection could one possibly have against all that?

I always catch myself "judging" men on their handshake as to how much they interact with females. Because a man that mostly shakes other men's hands will grip it tighter than a man who is also often "exposed" to women. The latter will know from experience that we often wear jewelry and it can hurt to squeeze the hand too tight or that our nails are done or whatever. It seems to me that a lot of people (especially men) confuse tight with firm. You can have a firm grip without squeezing fingers together. Just thought I'd share that :)

I love handshakes! I am usually very judgemental when it comes to a poor handshake. I remember shaking 1 guy's hand and it literally felt like i stuck my hand in a bowl of jell-o. It was awful.

Well, it may reveal your true age, perhaps, but I think more important than that, it shows your professional experiences. Personally, I have trouble with the eye-contact part, I've noticed, but I try to make up for it in a strong grip. But I usually want to release early. One pump is good for me. I also really can't help the temperature of my palms, but if I know I'm about to shake hands with someone, I try to be sure my palms are mostly dry.

I am careful with handshakes, because I hate it when people squeeze too hard. I once made the mistake of shaking someone's hand after I injured my hand in a basketball game. I don't think he realized how crushing his handshake was. Ever since I have been cautious. I am especially gentle when shaking older people's hands and allow them to shake hands with just the ends of the fingers instead of palm to palm. I guess they have had their hands hurt often enough that they have to be on the defence to protect their hand from a too tight grip. I try to match hand strength to give a firm, but not too tight of a grip.
