I majored in Electrical Engineering and yes I didn't go to a single party during my time in college. Not because I didn't want to but because I always had a ton of homework to do. I mean a ton!!!! It was like a full time job. Nonetheless, I am now a professional engineer registered in the state of texas (look me up if you don't believe me). As soon as I graduated and earned my first engineering job, I realized how glad I was to have pushed through studying and pulling the all nighters. I went from making $9/hr as a bbq caterer to making $30/hr as an engineer. Now I make over $55/hr and I'm only 27 years old, plus I love my job. Engineering is hard but the rewards are worth it.

Depending on your university, there can be help. In my uni, there is a math centre in the library and the teachers have starbucks hours. I could be considered your opposite because I am near useless with my hands and have barely passed my practical modules. So, I believe if you can survive the first year math then there is hope for you. I know I speak for only my uni but once you have a fair grasp of first year math, you can contiinue.

My advice is: 1) EE is not for everyone, I’d say truly pursue it if you’re passionate and actually enjoy it even though it’s painful. Being “interested” isn’t good enough at the highest level. 2) Not just EE but in engineering general, you gotta have the engineering mind, meaning gotta have the creativity skills, problem solving skills, and intuition. 3) To set yourself apart from others aside from GPA and projects, is to learn EE related stuff outside of your course curriculum. Maybe do a personal project for fun. 4) Understand that, Education will certainly give you some exposure of experience and knowledge(especially lab courses), but overall teaches you how to learn and be disciplined which is critical in industry. 5) Never stop learning. Keep applying yourself in the field under no circumstances.

I was lazy as hell in high school but I wasnt planning to be an engineering major. I did very well on exams but didnt do much of assignments. When I started college my "home" life became nearly unbearable. I know my potential. I know I can get through these classes but when you have nowhere to recharge your batteries you get worn down more and more. I know if i had a place of my own my gpa would be much better and so would my state of mind be. I hope anyone who feels this way knows they arent alone. My sister told me the other day that she felt encouraged by me for pushing myself to do well on some exams even though we have had been going through some rough weeks and I felt like I was running on empty. What she didnt know was she was the one motivating me

It is annoying seeing people that they think just because you do well in high school classes it means that it will translate to university level. I have known people who got As in calculus in high school, than when they get to take their first real engineering/math/physics course they start shitting their pants and quit. If You don't have a high work ethic, discipline, drive you will fail. This applies to anything you want in life. The best doctors, scientists, engineers, etc, have those traits.
@Radhazardman

This! I think AP Calc in high school should be considered more of a "Pre-Calculus" course. Some of them are even called that. Plus, the basics of Cac I are so important to understand and be able to implement as you progress in the mathematics courses required for EE that it's probably worth it to take the course anyway. Calc II is NOT a joke! It's a good indicator of how much someone wants to go through this major. Also, Alex V is spot-on. I did well in high school. AP courses from middle school and beyond, did alright on ACT/SAT, and graduated top percentage of my class without trying much outside of College Board AP exams. Got to college and found that my study habits, academic retention, and overall knowledge of several subjects to be subpar. It was disheartening but a good learning experience. Engineering of any discipline requires hard work and perseverance. I hope the people who come to this video see these comments and take them to heart!

From my experience as so far completing 3 years of Electrical Engineering with a Weighted average mark of 73, the main trait you need is commitment. Like maths doing an EE degree requires strong emphasis on the progression of your subjects because they overlap. Finish all your homework and assignments and do independent research and spend some time in the lab and you will definitely hit 80+. As I said all it really is is commitment, and you will also find that once you are able to balance out your time and work hard, you can do other extra curricular things to buff up your resume. Me personally I have messed about a little too much hence the subpar result, but also remember that you need to really like EE or you will definitely fail or barely pass.

Too bloody hard. That hard. At least where I study. Especially for a computer engineering student. I write this after spending LITERALLY the ENTIRE day (with breaks obviously) surfing the net and reading the book to death just to figure out how the bloody **** they managed to get the finite closed loop gain of a non inverting op-amp given finite open loop gain. Since you know, they thought it was a brilliant idea to skip the whole bloody process and just jump to the formula. My two years younger self would have shed tears of frustration by now but my spirit is already broken that I can only muster anger.

@@trap-pd2mv Firstly, its not as hard as ppl make it out to be. Honestly , its challenging but its not like the courses are designed for you to to bad. That would just be horrible. It is definetly doable . You can do well. Many people do well. Its more about work ethic than being some genius. Secondly, chances are ifyou accepted into the program, you are clearly capable of doing well. You will have time to relax and enjoy student life outside school . Its all about time management. Being consistent with studies and assignments is key. You can enjoy a good social life. I do decent in grades and still.have plenty time to myself. Its not some crazy constant stream of work that ppl.make it out to be, trust me. If you slack then of course it become stressful but thats a given. As a student, you learn what works best for you and eventually, you will be used to the nature of EE. Consistency and hardwork is key. Lastly, the nature of EE requires some math skills. Not crazy hard, but if you can follow first year math well i.e calc1 , then u will be fine. Whats more important is your passion. Are you interested in EE? Where does your passion lie in? One who enjoys their studies will often time be more studious and beless stressed than one who doesnt.

Wish I had this video when I was applying to be a EE. I'm now about to graduate with a BSEE. I'll be a year late to graduate compared to my official class, completing my 5th year to get my degree, due to health issues and a bit of switching my discipline within EE, but in hindsight the experience was exhausting and towards the end has been enjoyable. His point about taking those APs and doing those classes at a community college is very helpful -- taking them earlier would be better. You can save a lot of time and money, and plus I feel institutions like community colleges teach it better than at the Uni I am currently attending.
@psciotto
@psciotto 7 лет назад
One thing to keep in mind regarding AP courses is that certain courses may not actually reduce your course load in college. For example, taking AP physics is definitely worth it, but depending on which version of the AP exam you take, you may not be able to "test out" of your physics requirements. If you take the B exam (without calculus), it'll give you a solid foundation, but you'll likely be required to take physics with calculus as an undergraduate. There are similar situations with AP calculus (AB vs BC exams), and AP chemistry, depending on your school's chemistry requirements for EE majors. That being said, I'd still urge you to take AP classes in high school to both prepare you for a college level work load, and to give you a better foundation for majoring in EE.

As someone who graduated with a degree in electrical engineering in 1996, I can tell you that it is the hardest thing I ever did in my life. I was a strong student in high school and it took every neuron I had at my disposal to get through engineering. The attrition rate was very high. Out a class of 65 students that started out in electrical engineering with me, only 11 made it to graduation. One piece of advice I would also provide to prospective students is to research the various engineering schools and their respective universities. Not all schools are created equal and you can get a gauge of their rankings via internet searches as well as reading about their alumni. Another big research point is find out how good the university's placement services are for post graduates. Being able to land a good job once you graduate is by no means a picnic and your life will be so much more difficult if the placement services at your university are sub-par. (Like mine were)

One thing I learned with my useless BSEE: it was an absolute waste to be a full-time worker, part-time evening student at my university. The IEEE office was closed at 5pm (my first classes started at 5:30pm). I had a mortgage, so internships were absolutely not obtainable. Not every class was offered every semester at nights, so it took me 10 years to graduate. Some people might be successful in their program, but I wasn't. I did graduate with a 3.3 GPA, but never worked in the field. If I could do it over again, I'd get a degree in math - my job is a statistician in the insurance industry. Your mileage may vary.

This video isn't bad, but it takes the perspective of someone who was lucky. It's not as simple as just put the effort in and you will be rewarded for it. Engineering is an industry full of men with giant egos, and corporate bullshit. Some professors only care about their research, and once you get out in the real world you will find that jobs are not all that readily available for young engineers, contrary to what we are told. If you do find a job, you will likely be working for a military contractor and you probably wont do any design work. I live in microsoft word. My job title might as well be semantics engineer or process engineer. If you dont want to design things simply to save a military contractor a few bucks, then I might suggest you to do something else. If you do pursue engineering, YOU have to do it for yourself. Download CAD software, buy a 3D printer and learn how to use an EDA program. University probably wont teach you how to use practical tools or skills for making things. Which is what engineering is known for.

If you think a GPA 3.5 < is tough or too much for you, do not get into STEM. All the STEM majors require at the very least a 3.2 GPA, but for prestigious and reputable schools its a must for your GPA to be above a 3.7, or even 3.9/4.0. Its important to look at reputable schools, which for me, since I’m from california, I would aim for either Stanford, UCB (Berkeley) or UCLA. Those 3 schools not only have above average reputation for engineers, but they also have certain more uncommon, yet more demanded engineering classes that ordinary or other UCs/in-state Universities don’t have, which is why they rank as the 3 best schools to study engineering, and yes, they do compete with some Ivy League schools in terms of reputation such as Princeton, Harvard and Cambridge and even though MIT isn’t Ivy League but still one of the best schools for all STEM majors, UCB, UCLA and Stanford compete with MIT course wise. You can go and obtain a bachelors at UC Davis, or UC Merced, but graduating from UCLA or UCB gives you an upper hand since every employer looking for engineers look for specific, uncommon yet most demanded set of skills, which would be evaluated once you’ve submitted your UCLA transcript. The employer will say “oh, this candidate not only graduated from UCLA, but he has completed a series of coursework that gives him the skills we are looking for” (employers look at all the classes you took in all 4 years of university, mostly your upper division courses/classes, to determine which position you’ll be placed in). All this is based on my internship with SMUD, which is why I’m studying Electrical Engineering, concentration in power engineering (those massive electrical power-plants) and I’m also interested in electronics, so I’ll probably take a course or 2 in that field. For those curious on how I landed an internship with SMUD (and how I got accepted into 7/13 internships I applied for), I’ll post the classes I’ve taken at community college.

I get paid 19/hr since my unweighted GPA was 4.2 and my weighted GPA was 3.9. I’m going to keep my internship for an year so I can complete my IGETC since I focused only on my lower division major classes, so I should transfer next spring semester (next year) and obtain junior status.

@WHiPCPL
@WHiPCPL 4 года назад
I'm an Electrical Engineer, graduated January last year. It's a fun degree however do be warned. Dependent on where you are in the world, a job in this field will be really hard to get. I've been looking for a job for 1.5 years. The reason of me getting rejected from 20+ jobs is not because of my grades or my person, but because of lack of experience and the amount of newly educated engineers greatly outnumber the need for newly educated engineers in this field. That being said though, the skills you will learn can lead to a number of jobs within transmission, distribution, automation, consulting and R&D. Personally for me I only barely passed programming, which means I'm excluded from jobs in the automation sector which is probably the gold mine for getting a job (in my country at least). So my number one advice: Pay attention in programming! You'll be excluding yourself from a big market if you don't learn it. However don't let my sad perspective ruin your wish to study this major!

@@cocothetimeless8382 It definitely is. Although you should probably know this: Unless it's embedded programming you won't need to learn coding so "intensively". I would still pay attention in programming because you'll never know what you'll need, but I don't code much outside of using linux commands at the moment.

The part about not being able to party or have fun is a very misleading statement. Engineering is a lot of work, and you won't have as much free time, but as long as you're managing your schedule well, you'll almost always be able to find a chunk of time to take a break and have some fun; with the exception of busier times of the quarter/semester like midterms and finals.
