How Hard Is It to Land a Plane With Zero Experience?

Inside Edition

In the wake of interior designer Darren Harrison landing a Cessna solo without any flying experience, Inside Edition’s Les Trent tried to do the same thing … in a flight simulator. Like Harrison, Les has no flying experience. His flight instructor was Jim Goldfuss of Pilot Proficiency International. According to Les, flying the simulator was difficult, but landing it was stressful. The verdict: Flying is a lot harder than you think.

The reporter looks like he has zero experience handling anything. Death grip and decides it's a great idea to move the controller in huge motions. It only takes a tiny bit of movement to make a difference. I hate flight simulators and have no good experience with them. Using a keyboard and mouse taught me to don't touch the controls if it's not necessary and adjust in small increments unless you want the aircraft to crash.

Its not powered by hydraulics so it will have feedback. Some pilots of the raw feel but really just have to have a good firm grip. Watching where the wind blows helps to. From the video his airspeed is way to slow so he stalls and looses control.
@bigblue207
@bigblue207 2 года назад
Learning how to trim is pretty much one of the highest priorities a pilot has. Trimming is just the word for adjusting this little control that helps keep the plane stable. Some planes have a wheel, some a little joystick thing. Flying should never really require muscle. It takes too much brainpower away from setting courses and doing some mental math or keeping radio calls straight. But as easy as it sounds it’s pretty difficult to learn how to trim right. And when you don’t trim at all you get what happened in the video. People perceive a left turn, so they bank right, but they overshoot it and then they try correcting by overcompensating left. And then that changes the aerodynamics and everything and soon you’re just flailing around when literally all you have to do is keep the controls still and slow everything down. Everything happens a million times faster in a plane and people make really dumb mistakes they wouldn’t otherwise because it’s sensory overload if it’s new. It’s a lot of information to look at and process. Which is why computers fly no problemo. It’s just one of those things your brain takes over and it wants to do something wrong and it takes a lot of familiarity to be able to say “no, I can’t fight it, I just gotta hold it still”. Kind of like hydroplaning in a car and keeping the wheels pointed forward.

Something I’ve figured is that if you’ve had experience playing a flight sim such as fsx, xplane, or even a combat sim such as DCS, you would have a good chance of safely landing basic small aircraft in an emergency without real world experience. Something I remember from the first time I flew an aircraft after playing these games in my childhood was my instructor commenting on how smooth my reactive input was on the controls; a trait most likely gained from the sim experience.

Yeah. I soloed last year at 14. (I have had quite a bit of real world experience flying) But I think playing games even on vr helped me a lot

My buddy is a instructor at NMC in traverse city Mi. His plane lost its engine earlier this week and he had to make a crash landing into a baseball field. Guess it was a badass landing by many accounts.

Unfortunately aircraft don't have a mass transportation line like a bus. When I started aircraft cost about $15-25K and rented for $30-50 and hr now you can add a zero to that with rentals about 5 times more since 1968 and 1991 and the present respectfully. Cars were all well under 3K in 69 except luxury cars like a 30k Rolls or 9-10K Cadillac with base price of 7K. Now houses have gone from 35k in 80's to 700k for some nice but cheaply made habitat for humanity models.

Had the opportunity to participate in both fixed wing and rotary wing simulation, it is quite difficult if one is not familiar with the flying instrument and unable to multitask monitoring outside and inside the cockpit. Good job to the ATC and the make shift pilot! 🤓

He was likely flying in the right seat with the pilot as a passenger. He would of been able to see how the pilot flew the plane and mirror what he saw. After looking at radio recordings he was capable of finding things such as altitude and vertical speed pretty easily.

The thing is the guy who flew the plane was flying a Cessna Caravan which is a lot easier to fly than most flight simulators. Also his background is Interior Design, so they tend to pay a lot of attention to detail and use a lot of 3D modeling tools programs, which probably helped him understand X-Y Axis. Also the ,

First off, the reporter was not taking it very serious at all in the simulator. I'm sure that he was doing it for dramatic effect because it is in no way hard, in the sim or real life, to get a feel for it just after a few mins to at least be able to keep the wings level, make basic turns, climb and descend. My 10 year old hopped on to one of the Redbird sims at my flight school and with no experience could figure it out pretty easily especially if someone like ATC is talking to him explaining stuff as they went. He wasn't listening to the instructor at all really. He would listen a lot more if it was a real situation. That all being said though the craziest thing in this video is , as a pilot myself, seeing the amount and size of those birds flying all around the whole airfield is quite alarming lol. I wonder how many bird strikes they get monthly and how often! Great job to Darren being able to keep his nerves in check enough to be able to listen well enough to get him and the instructor safely onto the ground! Good job as well to everyone else involved from ATC to the ground response crews!

Though I've never flown any real aircraft, I fly RC aircraft and know a ton about airplanes and how to fly them, passed down from my dad. I also spend a lot of time flying flight sims, so I can get a feel for how real aircraft behave. I would like to get my pilot's license eventually in the future too. Though I'm not sure I would ever want this type of situation to occur, I think if it did, I would be very much prepared to take control and land with my knowledge of flight. Props to this guy though, with no prior experience with flying. That takes some gut! Glad he's safe and all worked out.

From a computer flight sim perspective, I've not had much issue getting to grips with the control of a plane and how to get it down on the runway! But actually in the air, controlling a real plane for the first time, landing, must seem absolutely daunting! At least on a sim, if you crash you can just keep retrying until you land it.

He obviously read something about airplanes because in his interview with Today he knew about an airplane stalling, and he knew that if an airplane flies to fast that it could break apart. That isn't common knowledge it requires research. That also isn't "zero experience". I also find it interesting that he was able to move forward into the cockpit when the plane was descending at a rate of over 6375 ft per minute....which is an unbelievable rate of descent.

I’d be curious to see if the reporter was using the rudder pedals. I also noticed he wasn’t using the elevator as much to correct for pitch angle(which is understandable, since he, as well as myself, and almost everyone else reading this is used to 2 dimensional vehicle control with cars.) But, to his credit, he did manage to get lined up with the runway for final. Definitely looked challenging. Especially since there was a delay in the attitude (not to be confused with altitude) change from when the controls were moved. I have flown (and successfully landed) a space shuttle in a simulator. It is challenging at first, but once you get used to 3 dimensional control, it’s manageable (especially with help from a HUD)

Pilot here🙋🏽‍♂️Landing in a sim is harder than landing in real life. It’s also much easier to keep the wings level in actual flight. A sim has its purpose (training), but it differs from the real thing.

If you’re interested in flying you have got to understand how much input is too much and how much is just enough. Most people fly small planes with two fingers on the yoke and a hand on the throttle. If you fly with small inputs it gets a lot easier and you have a lot more control than rotating fully.
