Holy shit that post in 1:22 is so stupid. Async Compute is NOT meant to make the GPU perform "CPU math to help out with processing", it's supposed to speed up processing of compute shaders that can be executed asynchronously with classic shaders such as vertex shaders, geometry shaders, pixel shaders etc.

Haha yeah maybe. Turning it on essentially places more load on the CPU by the looks of it or utilizes less of the GPU. Now maybe that extra CPU utilization is doing something I can't measure or see like some are saying it could be helping with latency. The options description present it as helping performance with some systems and with my pool of hardware I chose for this video it didn't really help turning it on.

I have an extraordinarily CPU bound system as i save up for more upgrades. With a 6850K and 7900XT, Async Compute limits my maximum FPS which is achieved on the ship from 130 to 100, but raises my minimum FPS during matches from the high 30s to mid 50s during moments of extreme chaos.
@TerraWare
@TerraWare Месяц назад
Ok that is actually interesting. Maybe it helps in crippling intensive scenarios which some have mentioned. I tried to present some firefights but in this game each mission or firefight can be so different from one another that it can make it difficult to compare and come up with a meaningful measurable difference. Basically I ended up with sometimes Async on having slightly higher fps with firefights and sometimes slightly lower because of how random everything is.

Believe it or not, the Autodesk engine in use by HD2 is rather old. It would make sense if it isn’t designed with modern CPUs in mind. The kind of load that is able to be done on the CPU wouldn’t show up on the GPU usage as much because it won’t be massively multithreaded and won’t use much of the main component of the gpu.

My 2 cents: your test is probably wrong. If this affects CPU usage, then CPU will work most when there is a lot of things happening on the screen (EG: doing math for what each enemy AI does, how rockets and lasers flow, where bullets go, etc). Those are the CPU intensive tasks in general (I may be wrong, I dont know specifics of AH's engine). This means that testing a static setting is a poor test all in all for this setting, and it's probably not helping because, indeed the CPU is never the one bottlenecking. This being said, I did not run any tests, it's just my guess.
@TerraWare
@TerraWare Месяц назад
I hear you and those would be CPU intensive calculations. Problem is you cant really replicate an identical scenario as a 1 to 1 to compare and get accurate results. In one fight you may get two ranged automatons, one big one and 3 melee ones and another they can call in a reinforncement ship. My angle of setting it up was to present a CPU and GPU bound scenario for all combinations that bottlenecks consistently than see how Async compute effects things. I tried engaging into battles and I was running into results that were kind of allover the place and hard to come to a conclusion that I could present.
@TheShadow6391
@TheShadow6391 Месяц назад

@@TheShadow6391 I don't know I may try something. One way I can do it is solo. Basically choose a mission and land on same spot. Attack an objective clear it and than exit the game without returning to ship. This allows you to go to that same exact mission when you relaunch the game. I have got one comment from someone with older hardware saying async compute on lowers their overall fps a bit but their 1% lows are better so there could be something to this.

Latency is a factor, especially for NVIDIA. AMD has an advantage over NVIDIA in asynchronous. I had a first gen threadripper and this setting sometimes boosted my fps by 50+% absolutely insane.
@TerraWare

OK that's cool. It's why I wanted to ad a very slow CPU like a Ryzen 2600 than pair with a powerful GPU but I didn't really see much of a difference. I would like to find a way to check in intense combat, only problem is the randomness of the game and how different each encounter can be to duplicate a scenario. I have a theory in mind I could try but I did try to include firefights and the results were inconsistent because of the randomness of the game.

Enabling this feature reduced GPU busy and increases CPU busy ( reduced gpu load while increasing CPU load)... so it does the exact opposite to what is says it does. It's like Async Compute is just making you waste cycles with both the GPU as well as the CPU instead the CPU only.

It shouldn't really matter I believe that's just a hard limit. If you set it to 100% it doesnt mean it will always run at 100% but will go that high if needed. I'd just leave it at default unless you are overclocking the card than maybe set it to 100%

I could be wrong but my understanding of Async compute is that it's meant to help reduce input latency at the cost of fps. So, it reducing framerate isn't surprising.
@HartFalleon
@HartFalleon Месяц назад
Like it doesn't help that different sources are using different language when describing the setting. Most I see describe async compute as a means to "improve efficiency."
@HartFalleon
@HartFalleon Месяц назад
And that's why the recommendation is to use it with weaker processesors, so that one core or thread doesn't get overwhelmed with work if the gpu can process some tasks concurrently with async enabled.
@HartFalleon
@HartFalleon Месяц назад
TLDR, if you prefer fps turn it off. If you value better input at the cost of some fps, turning it on may improve efficiency.
@TerraWare

I don't know about the latency. I'm not equipped to measure that. Maybe it does but the settings description of the setting says it can help or hurt performance depending on hardware configuration which is why I wanted to test a range of hardware focusing mostly on different generations of CPU's I have.

It's kinda true. i limit it with external means (Radeon adrenaline, or rivatuner) instead. same cap at 60fps, my cpu usage down about 20%. it's ridiculous

@TerraWare Месяц назад
I've noticed frame limiters are not properly implemented in many games. A recent one is Dragons Dogma 2. For me using RTSS framerate cap seems to produce the most consistent results. It's what I personally use although you can use the built in framerate limiters in Nvidia and Radeon driver software.

I've found that switching "Display Mode" from "Borderless Window" to "Fullscreen" seems to enable the frame limiter, Freesync (and vsync). It shouldn't work this way, but seems to anyway.

4:49 nothing strange about heldivers 2 is a non stop simulation , everything is simulated , thats why we get individual bullets getting shot from the weapons etc en simulation games need to process a lot of data fast to do all the physics calculations like raggdoll etc if you turn a sync compute on you are forcing that data to be processed by the gpu and gpu's are bad in doing simulation calculations thats why the game is cpu heavy a sync compute turned on in this game is only good if your gpu is better than your cpu wich usually is the case for older computers
@TerraWare
@TerraWare Месяц назад
"a sync compute turned on in this game is only good if your gpu is better than your cpu wich usually is the case for older computers" That was my thinking for this setting being there which is why I threw in a Ryzen 2600 at 13:20 with a 7900XTX as a gpu. A very unlikely combo and FPS was very slightly higher with it off. Testing it in a firefight would be something I'd like to be able to do only problem is this game is very random and procedurally generated to produce a consistent scenario for exhibit AC ON and exhibit AC OFF if that makes sense.
@Deathscythe91
@Deathscythe91 Месяц назад
@@TerraWare it was a good test , but in simulation processing power the 2600 is still a little better in processing than the 7900xtx apparently xD just shows the difference in data processing tasks can influence fps a lot gpu cores really be having a hard time with simulations like this

@TerraWare
@TerraWare Месяц назад
I tried firefights. The problem is as you probably know that it's impossible to try to present an identical scenario twice to compare differences because in one engagement you may get 10 automatons made of a few troopers commissars and a berserker. In another there could be twice as many and they call a dropship. We are talking margin of 10 to 15% so I was getting conflicting results to present. Instead what I tried to do which I explain is present a CPU and GPU bound scenario for all hardware configurations. The point wasnt to see the capabilities of my CPU's and GPU's in FPS but how Async Compute effects FPS in different hardware.
