It’s been 13 issues of X-Men, an entire X of Swords event, and over one full year on the calendar, but X-Men #18 finally returns to the mutants vs The Children of the Vault storyline seeded in X-Men #5, with the story of Wolverine (Laura Kinney), Darwin, and Synch’s mission inside the Vault.

Darwin, Wolverine and Synch, narration by Synch. We’re reminded that these three mutants have been chosen to learn all they can about the threats within the time-warping Vault, as Professor X has deemed them “the greatest threat to mutantkind.” I think it’s worth calling out here, that I’ve been applying this statement pretty literally to the Children of the Vault, but I think the reality is it extends to all post-human technological advances - Charlie has seen Moira’s sixth life, presumably, and he knows the threats homo novisimma mean for mutants.

Waaaaay back before X of Swords even started the team was already missing over five months which was calculated to be over five hundred year inside The Vault.

Maybe I'm just old, but it all reads like it's building anticipation for the next issue. To make the reader not want to but NEED to come back next month. Maybe a negative side effect of the rise of the trades and binge TV is the loss of patiently waiting to see the resolve of a cliffhanger ending until the next month. I think it is a good sign when the ongoing narrative annoys the reader at a cliffhanger ending. Back the the day, average readers didn't think about the writer's or artist's run on a title. The was not thought to the conclusion of the story until either the announcement in the letter column of their last issue or a blurb on the credits page of the new team's first issue. I mean there are a lot of Xbooks right now telling a story so grand that lol you're wishing for more Xbooks to get more story at once. As we used to say back in the olden times, patience Danielsan ( yes I know your name isn't Daniel, it's just what we said ).

100%. Growing up we waited years for stories to end/continue and nobody cared, we just enjoyed the ride. Everything is about instant gratification these days and to be honest, it doesn’t make the experience any better. You lose time to think and have conversations about stories. You move from one beat to the next. There is no way to build excitement. One thing to consider, if Hickman burns through all of his story, his run is going to end, and who knows where the x-men go next. When he leaves he has he ability to reset everything and this will just be another Moria life. This time of x-men will be gone, so be careful what you wish for and just enjoy the ride.

@Ryan Wilson what do you mean by hard? It think the best part about the Hickman X man era is how easy it is to follow since there is a literal reading order at the back of almost every issue. Now if we’re talking about the cost of it then yea it’s kinda rough LOL

I feel like with this upgrade and him hopefully surviving this major major mission, he's gotta get elected to the X-men. That said, I wonder if he'll want to be on the team after thousands of years of fighting. Maybe he wants to chill or teach or even be on the council.

I really like Darwin as a character ( especially since his days on Peter David's XFactor) but I wasn't sure about this particular team at first. But now I see the genius of it. Darwin's power is essentially the ability to survive anything and that is the mission at it's core; to survive and deliver intelligence.

@@Comicbookherald I haven't been a fan of the anthology DC Future State books even though that seems to be the direction of some of their new titles. I would love if your Quiet Council book was an anthology that allowed the acceleration of some of these plot points that need to be re-visited/emphasized. We can see Wolverine's side in his book then we can see a Dolores Ramirez story that clarifies her motivations (re: current issue of Wolverine) in the anthology. Where's Horticulture? Stick them in the book. Want a day in the life of the mutant cultists? Stick them in this book. And so on.

Hickman has so many dangling threads: Mystique's bitterness and double cross, Broo's ascension to king, and the addition of hundreds (thousands?) of ancient mutants on Arrako.

It's going to be a 60 issue run so he's just setting up stuff in the first third of the run (20 issues) that will all be dealt with in the next 4 years still to come.

Ultimate Comics: The Ultimates is one of my favorite marvel comics ever. I have no idea how these pieces are going to snap together but I’m very excited at the idea of some that storyline factoring into X-Men via The City and Prof X/Maker.

Aaargh... I have been waiting so long for this... and excited for some kind of cohesive narrative to become apparent. Love this issue... the way the three of them just mow through the COV. Buuut... I just raged when I flipped the page and there was no more! So basically all we got was the first few hours of them in there?!?! They were supposed to come out! So angry rn.

I could easy see this Children of the Vault theme becoming a major event across the X-books. Give it a year, year-and-a-half, two years. The Dome and the City regroup, and build an army and take on the Krakoan mutants. We’ll see. I love Hickman’s writing - great stuff!!

They messed up because Synch copied non Mutant superhumans before. If I am not mistaken the superhuman he copied was Spider-Man. I may be mistaken on the hero he synched with but not his ability to do so.

I think the book works in single issues since each issue is basically a one and done but i do agree that i'd love to see Hickman doing a second title, specially if it was a quiet council book

The way Hickman writes, surprisingly, reminds me of Jack Kirby! As talented as he was, when he was the solo writer of the New Gods comics and Captain America, it felt like the stories would NEVER End!! But Hickman, I know, does have an end in mind, it's just a question of having the patience to stay with it.

"Death of death" I can think of 3 entities that might be concerned by that phrase. Thanos, Deadpool and, of course, Lady Death herself. I can't see her letting this go

Whoa! I went back to read issue #5 before reading this one today. It came out one year and a month ago, and they made a mutant circuit all the way back then. 11 months before SWORD #1 and the data pages about mutant synergy, still 6 issues until the absolutely bonkers Magneto synergy of X-Men #11 and the Commander meeting notes data page about power combos. One panel, Synch reaches toward the Vault, the next his hand blurs. Then the next panel they make a mutant circuit, and in the next panel, his hand is fine! This stuff is so well planned out long term, it's just baffling. I think that plays into what frustrates people about Hickman. He doesn't have all of his story arcs like a normal comic series. We had to wait for issues 8 and 9 for two stories in a row that were a continuing arc. I am cool with it. I'm all in on Hickman, even the slow drip.

I liked this issue and I don't think this is going too slow. I loved that they focused on Synch, I never really read anything with him but this made me like him a lot. I hope the next one focuses on Darwin. That was a good cliff hanger too. I really want to know what's going to happen next. It's building up various pieces that I want to know more about which is great. I dig your Ultimates connections. Your New X-Men and Quiet Council comic book ideas sound cool too. It would be good to get some insight on the government Krakoa is trying to run. It would be like The West Wing Meets The Illuminati comic book. I definitely think towards the Hellfire Gala we'll see a whole new world of X-Men when we see the new team. I'm excited for all the possibilities.

Wait, did I misunderstand? I thought time moved faster in the vault. So when we see the trio get out of the vault only a bit of time will have passed in the outside world while possibly eons of time for them. I am confused because comicbook herald seemed to imply the opposite. Unless i misunderstood, which is entirely possible. My apologise if so.

Yes. Time moves faster in The Vault. That whole first day that we saw in this issue could have happened in five minutes of time on Krakoa.

I for one am fine with it because the amount of x titles coming out in a month is huge and they are going increase it by 2, the only way this can work better is by either reducing the titles like especially axe excalibur now that the whole otherworld fiasco is over, rogue and gambit can be great in the new x-men line up or if hickman gives 2 x-men books with only 2-3 weeks of spacing (in alternate fashion) rather than the current monthly spacing. But the quality comics he's producing are really life-savers for x-men and cannot be compromised on.

About that second Hickman book, it would be very cool if it was from the perspective of the quiet council, but one from the perspective of Moira and how this incursion of mutants into the vault and every other action they are taking around the world (and space) reflects her plans and vision.

I would love to see a panel that is Charles and the Maker just facing each other, Dark Reed and (Allegedly) Dark Charlie just looking at each other and art done by R.B Silva. Plot twist: Maker is responsible for Franklin's De-mutation. Though I think it may have something to do with the reckoning war Slott is setting up with the return of Uatu and Nick Fury.

I feel that Hickman's X-Men is moving far too slowly. The other thing about this issue that disappointed me is the way Laura is depicted. It seems she far more feral acting than she has in a very long time, as if there has been no growth in her character, and we know there has been.

I'm just dying to have more info, I had a hunch as soon as I saw 19's cover that we wouldn't get all the info here, it's just Hickman is juggaling so many threads I just want him to start dealing with them sooner. You're right that he reads better with a binge, and I recently did that with EoW, but following it month to month is such a tease each time

@Comic Book Herald I can see this playing out like the original X-men going to Krakoa only to get captured. Darwin is along for the ride again too. A small group of mutants embark on a clandestine mission to an incredibly dangerous locale, which is basically a death sentence. The mutants are captured, immobilized, and held against their will. The stakes are written very high and I can see everyone not making it out. I can also see the Quiet Council lying about a failed missing, like ProX lied about the X-men failing.

I don’t get how this backwards time dilation benefits the vaults occupants. If days inside the vault means more time has passed outside this would put anyone emerging from the vault at a disadvantage advancement would of progressed a ton outside while little time passed inside. Now the opposite where more time passed inside then out makes more sense.

Well it's not like it's not its a stretch. Most mutants start off human like then during adolescence they gain their power the body reacts to the mind and they stop midway. The reborn mutants are different. They start out with mastery to a degree and skip the notion or shock to their abilities. So the hidden taps where most mutants go to when in duress are where their mutant ability should go. Then beyond that is when they push effort into their ability.

The pacing is a bit slow for me, knowing that Marvel has consistently tapped out on new volumes of series before we get to issue 60. Will Hickman's X-Men book go for the marathon run? If so, I'm fine with the pace. However, I'm a longtime reader of the X-Men, totally invested in these characters and I'd love to see all the dangling plot threads resolved. I enjoyed this issue, but I was a tiny bit disappointed in the execution after the building. Looking forward to next month.

Speaking of the Ultimate Universe, I was just reading Ultimate X Men and came across a mutant in issue 41 that I strongly think might be Peter aka Orphan Maker, this poor kid's power set caused him to kill every person he came into contact with by causing a toxic Nova within his vicinity, remember when Peter's suit was damaged and a green vapor started leaking out. marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Ultimate_X-Men_Vol_1_41

@@waltlikka yes it was, clearly that kid was too dangerous to live in the Ultimate universe, remember in Hellions recently no one wanted to bring Peter back because he would be too dangerous to Krakoa with out that containment suit.

Post resurrection augmentation is probably due to Sinister tampering with the genetic material he provides for the process. Whether Sinister is involved with the Ultimate’s Reed Richards is an interesting possibility.

It would be interesting if Synch becomes the basis for the Chimera - first step to synch any power, the next step to be able to merge powers. Rogue has had multiple powers at once, so she could technically be the Chimera as well, but in this 'mutant technology' world of House of X, it may be different to actually combining those powers. Whereas Synch can enhance the powers he gets... Would Synch be able to keep those powers he synchs with if he synched with Rogue? If his powers allow him to enhance the powers he synchs with... And it totally seems he's effectively got Hope's powers, and if she is an Omega level mutant... I mean, last I looked, she could only use other mutant's powers, so Synch has advanced beyond her.

If the Children weren't ready (they need to go to Level 3) what happens after getting decimated by this Krakoan trio? It seems like an arms race with the children trying to advance faster than the mutants but this issue seems to suggest that the Children would always be "catching up".

Hey Dave, I've been thinking about this for a week now. Do we really think that the city here is literally THE CITY from Ultimates or another one made by The Maker? What if Hickman's going with the same logic he posed in regards to the sentinels, that it doesn't matter how many Trasks you kill they will always be invented. It doesn't matter if Reed built the city, its a multiversal constant.

Synch has always been Omega level before the term was even coined and has the potential to go beyond omega level. Because the writers had never shown Everett to have any upper limit to his abilities. He was just always killed off, which in my opinion was for the convenience of the writers to creat hope summer, a gender swap whitewash version of the character. This reveal wasn't anything new it had already been cannon before in Amazing Spider-Man issue number 437 where synch copied Spider-Man abilities. Only thing this issue really implicated is that the writers either forgot or what happened in Amazing Spider-Man was retcon and now Cannon once again.

X of Swords was really annoying to read week by week for me as well. Though I've kinda started to appreciate more while re-reading the whole thing. X-Men, X-Force, and Excalibur in particular fall into that same category right now. Vita Ayala's New Mutants surprisingly feels like meatiest X-book of the line-up alongside S.W.O.R.D. and X-Factor which are also pretty consistent.

From what a remember similar but not the same. Synch doesn't require physical contact and can enhance the powers he gets in synch with. He can't keep them like rougue through prolonged exposure. Initially he couldn't do multiples at once but I think he learned how over time. He's walking mutant technology all to himself. Mind you this may be have changed over time but that's how he was initially.

@@TheChriscount That's actually Exiles Mimic who is limited to five powers at a time. 616 Mimic can copy way more, but he can be overloaded by too many. And the powers he copies don't seem to be permanent.

@@jorienwachukwu466 if you are overloading. You have a limit. His I'm pretty sure is 5. Like when he came in to contact with sunspots. He freaked out about powers. His body was trying to absorb sunspots too. And he couldn't handle it.

Yeah 100% this story is moving too slowly. Hickman basically wants to tell a story as vast as One Piece but he's releasing one issue a month, dealing with around 48 other side series introducing new garbage, and we had a huge waste of time in X of Swords. We haven't seen Moira since, what, 2019? Overall from the end of House/Power of X to today we honestly haven't seen that much change in the books. A couple side characters left...that's basically it. In what world is it acceptable for almost 2 years of issues to accomplish so very little? Let alone taking into account the vast number of X books doing absolutely nothing.

1 year later....did this sht EVER get an answer? Idk if ANYTHING Hickman threw against the wall stuck. PS Was it Sunspot's AIM? Or the wild MasterMold from NEW X-MEN 114? pss Wait he is in space...I think??
