On September 26, 2022, American ski-mountaineer, Hilaree Nelson and her life partner Jim Morrison reached the true summit of Manaslu, the eight highest mountain in the world, in tough conditions. Upon reaching the summit, they quickly transitioned from climbing to skiing in cold and wind with a plan to ski around the corner and regroup with their Sherpa team.
Morrison skied first, and after a few turns, Nelson followed and triggered a small avalanche. She was swept off her feet and carried down a narrow snow slope down the south side. She fell 5,000 feet down the south slope of the mountain. Morrison did everything he could to locate her but was unable to go down the face as he hoped to find her alive and live his life with her.
After determining there was nothing he could do to help her, he descended, making it to base camp safely. Two days later, her body was found and retrieved from the mountain’s south face. Rescuers found her body at about 6,200 feet from the summit. The helicopter dropped Jim Morrison and two high-altitude Sherpa guides near the location.
They found Nelson’s body about 50 meters from the landing site. Earlier, aerial searchers had seen a ski and some clothes during their reconnaissance flight, but worsening weather prevented them from completing the task. The helicopter took off as soon as the weather cleared and flew directly back to the same area on the south side of the mountain.
It took searchers an hour and a half to dig out Nelson’s body that was buried half in the snow. It was badly damaged. The helicopter then returned to base camp and flew her body to Kathmandu. A postmortem was conducted at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital. Her body was cremated on October 2, 2022 in a Buddhist ceremony in Kathmandu.
This is her story.

A very good documentary. Thank you. Life is for living and she and her live long partner enjoyed it to the full. So so sad that the avalanche triggered her death and she couldn’t join her partner at the bottom. RIP and be Blessed in Heaven. You will be reunited with family and friends in God Kingdom ❤

A genuinely beautiful tribute to an extraordinary woman. There are others commenting on this thread, they maybe right, maybe wrong, but I'm fairly sure the world would be a better place if they kept their darker thoughts to themselves and instead celebrated a truly remarkable life.

right, although this lady seemed not to have only holy thoughts when she decided even in harsh and dangerous condition to risk her life, havening children at home. If You search for dangers and risks it is very logical that things like that happens This is the Hybris of man to challenge nature beyond sound judgment and reason.

Astea nu se pot numi mame!! Saracii copilasi... Ce-o fi fost in inima lor... O femeie fara suflet, nu o mama. O mama adevarata nu face asa ceva, ci sta acasa cu copiii ei!! Nu am pic de simpatie sau parere de rau pt asemenea oameni.

No way to do the sport the way she did and still put her children first. Something had to give. And choices were made.

Hate to judge, but you’re doing it anyway? No one makes these comments about men with children who chase their dreams with extreme sports, how do we still have a double standard like that? She went with the support and love of her children and life partner, she died doing what she loved and that surpasses all.

@@oldbat2ccats I have exactly the same opinion regarding men with children. People can do what ever they want unless they have made decisions making them responsible for other human beings lives, in my opinion. Accidents can happen everywhere but some activities are truly more risky than others. Not many of us can spend our lives daily doing what we love to do, still we have to continue our lives. Why not bring the children up first and then live your life to the fullest?! The mountains are going nowhere...

I'm sure her kids miss her. But they also knew she loved to do the things she did. And her kids look like they enjoy doing those things too. I'm sure she told her kids the risks living that kind of lifestyle.

@@wyomingadventures I see, it's OK if the mother of a 9 year old and an eleven year old, gets herself killed doing an extremely dangerous thing, which she loves to do, right?! 🥲 The kids had no say in it, but if she told them the risks involved, then it's fine! 😅 And, she was divorced, but the boys will find some place to go, correct! 🤣 And since you saw a photograph of her outside in the snow with them, that closes the case! 😂 Being a mother of young children, should in no way inhibit a woman in her heroic aspirations, that is obvious!! 🥲 😅 🤣 😂

What a ridiculous way to die?! It wasn’t tragic, it was senseless! None of what she was doing made sense in the real world. What a ridiculous notion of what life is? Couldn’t stop playing in the mountains to raise the kids at their age? No old mom & dad just had to go be the narcissists they ever were thinking they would ski down the side of a mountain?! She’s dead. The End.
