Obviously, it's really complicated, but prioritizing contact and power isn't bad, just keep in mind pretty much everything but gap power is good. It's about finding players with good combos and using them effectively in the context of your team.
I appreciate that you mention that gap power is dependent on era. I like to play in custom leagues or in eras with fewer homers, bigger ballparks, and conditions that make gap power really good!
