Sam Dracott is a farrier in the UK who cleans, trims, files, polishes, and shoes horse hooves. He works mostly with riding horses. Farriers need to have some veterinary skills to understand the anatomy of a horse's foot, as well as some blacksmithing skills to construct a form-fitting metal shoe from scratch. Dracott says that caring for a horse's feet should be a regular part of its hygienic routine. The process doesn't hurt the horse when done correctly. In fact, it can even prolong its life.

People always seem to think this hurts the horse, but I can assure you, having done it once before during agriculture in high school (a real subject here in rural aus) the only thing that ends up hurting is your back.

It looks like it hurts the horse because he's hammering a nail into it's a foot. It's like a giant oil tanker or a huge plane. You can explain the science behind it, but visually it makes no sense that a gigantic piece of metal floats or flies, or that hammering nails into an animal's foot is fine.

Most people do not realise how skilled farriers are. They are podiatrists for horses. The trimmings from the hooves just drive dogs crazy. And the skill they have to make any horse behave. Wonderful.

You can tell it doesn’t hurt the horse because this guy still has all of his bones unbroken- horses have very clear ways of letting you know if you’ve hurt them. They’re huge powerful animals and have no qualms with reminding you of that fact!

@@hrld1988 horses don't really have a concept of "being put down for being too aggressive", if that's what you mean. and if that's _not_ what you mean... you do realize how tiny and fragile we are compared to horses, right? the horses know. the horses know very, very well. -or they don't know and they'll kick you anyway because horses will kick other horses that're pissing them off, there's no reason humans would be different-

It always impressed me how farriers are able to eyeball the exact shape of each individual hoof and then recreate it in the shoe. Also how they’re able to do it day in and day out without breaking their back. My back hurts when all I have to do is pick out their feet.

If you don't reshoe a horse that is used to wearing shoes it will walk very insecure and will be afraid of running on hard roads. So yeah they definitely find this process as something positive for them.

I'm sure you're right. My cats and my dog feel better after their nails are trimmed. Once they realize this a few times, they are much better about having it done. At least mine are. My senior kitty, Amour, just turned 15. He's had his nails trimmed for so long that he lays relaxed in my arms knowing that nummies will follow and his toes will feel good.

@@anyascelticcreations it's a loot deeper than that for horses. The horse in my profile Pic wasn't trimmed for almost a decade, he gets abcesses INSIDE his feet and he will never be sound. It took 2 years for his hoof to resemble a hoof, and its going on 3 years and he still has issues. He'll never be able to come camping or hunting with us, he always gets left behind when we go into the mountains and we have to. His terrible animal hoarder old.owner MADE that decision for him. If you don't do this often enough, the horse could end up needing to be put down. Their bones will rotate inside their feet and punch out the bottom of the sole in some cases. Dogs and cats just don't have that issue

Not all of them are. They have to be trained to trust someone picking up their feet, which is their main source of escaping or kicking a predator. I have a (formerly) wild mustang and she’s a brat about her feet. She needs sedated for a farrier to work on her. The instinct to flee is strong.

When horses are young, hurt or abused it is very difficult and sometimes dangerous for a farrier. The more experienced farrier knows how to handle the more difficult horses.

Most finished/trained horses love the farrier. Mostly because they associates the farrier with feeling better afterwards and treats. I always rewarded and make the farrier a positive, relaxing experience 😊 it is good to note that not all horses start this way and can require a lot of training

With a professional, experienced farrier, horses find it relaxing, too, I was told. Young horses may need to be restrained, as the experience is new to them, but older horses, like in the video, trust the human and just wait it out. Some horses are known to fall half-asleep and, if the farrier is currently busy with the front legs, the horse starts leaning on the farrier. More confortable for the horse. Less so for the farrier... In these cases, the farriers suspect there is some trolling on the part of the horse.

It's cool how he cleans the hoof so quickly and efficiently. I don't have to be an expert in horses to know this doesn't hurt them. The Huns and Mongols were equestrian pros long before the US was even an idea, Imagine the amount of knowledge people have gained from those cultures and the amount of time man has had to understand the biology of horses

If they do not remove the growing hoof, the horse will become in pain. Imagine never being able to cut your toenails. Pain when walking right? Same with horses. In the wild, the fact that they run so much naturally wears down the hoof.

I used to work in a shop that sold hiking / mountaineering gear and clothing. One day, a guy came in looking for some traditional leather walking boots. Big dude, really heavily built. He ended up settling on a pair of Scarpa SLs, which are a classic heavy-duty design. The kind of boot you'd expect to last many years. While he was trying them on, I asked what kind of walks / terrain they were for. He said - "Oh, they're not for walking, they're for work. I'm a farrier, and mostly work with Clydesdales. I should get at least six months out of these... when those things lean on you, you don't want flexible shoes on." 😳

I always thought that no one short of a bodybuilder could shoe Clydesdales. I’m sure they’d flatten your foot if one stepped on it without steel toe boots. It hurts enough getting stepped on by a regular sized horse. He’s gotta have a back made of steel too.

Also notice the grooves in the shoe. When nails are put in they are then recessed, they don’t stick out from level of shoe. BUT, in areas where horses worked in winter and ice, they would put the shoe on the other way around, groove in inside. Then the heads of the nails stood proud of the shoe, giving horse, in effect, studded tires! Anybody out there old enough to remember when studded snow tires were the big thing? They were eventually banned due to damage to roads.

Actually such technique is still used in horse competitions. The nails are put in normally, but the farrier drills two holds on each shoe. It allows for metal cones to be screwed inside, so that the horse does not slide during cross country. I've participated to competitions such as in Pompadour ( France ) where the road has an insane amount of small holes due to this.

Same with dental. They get their teeth filed, or "floated", approximately once a year, to remove sharp points. This allows them to live up to twice as long as the average wild horse, who live an average of 15 years and have dental issues that interfere with chewing as the main cause of death.

I worked for years at a stable, and one of my jobs was to occasionally hold rambunctious horses who wouldn't stand tied while the farrier did their feet....this video brings back the smell of hot hooves....once you smell it once, you'll never forget it!

Believe me, that's not always the case. Some horses are great, but some have had bad experiences & others just hate having the hooves dealt with. There are some that require sedation for a farrier to deal with.

It does happen though. Sometimes farriers need to work on horses that either don’t have much experience with being shod or they’re just the antsy type and don’t like to stand still. This is why it’s so important to teach your horse to stand still while picking their feet up among other reasons.

Thanks for this informative video. Recently, I had seen a clip from the anime "Monster Girl Doctor" in which Glenn (the doctor) had to replace the shoes on the hind hoofs of a centaur girl. There's so much that goes into it, farriers go to school then often assist licensed farriers before going out on their own. If you get the angles wrong- not just of the hoof, but of the hoof in relation to the leg- you can cripple a horse, or at least severely limit its athletic ability. That's why I never learned and took over from my talented pro!

@@Kelly_Ben I meant more just to file what's all ready there to help stretch out appointments. There's very few farriers in my area and also very expensive so very basic "How to do a tiny file to stretch so your horse doesn't kill himself due to very long hooves."

@@KateandBree Definitely, I agree! I will probably learn and eventually do every other trim myself, but one of my horses had such terrible hoof angles it wasn't worth the chance of crippling her. My yearling has such great feet, once she's fully developed and past the risk of messing up her growth, I'd love to do basic trims on her!

One thing I never understood about horses' hooves is like... how would they be cut in nature? Would they just continuously grow? Certainly not, but I don't see another solution from the basic understanding I have of it.

So in the wild they wear down at more or less the right rate so that they don't need shoes. In fact, many ponies who aren't ridden on roads don't need shoeing. The shoe is there to prevent excessive wear from riding/walking on hard surfaces like roads or concrete... and because the iron shoe prevents such wear, trimming is necessary when shoes are replaced. Incidentally, the process of burning on a shoe smells really bad, as you might expect from burning keratin. This is because the keratin protein strands are bound together by disulphide bridges, and it's the sulphur content in the products of combustion that makes it smell bad.

@For yt the material doesn’t matter much other than one being more dense and durable than the other. Other materials can be used, but at least traditionally, the blacksmith makes the shoes, so all they need is a strip of metal which they can work to fit each horse individually. Naturally when creatures walk, they do not put all of their weight into each step, which would cause damage. If you walk with a regular pair of shoes and stomp with each step, you’re going to feel shockwaves through your muscles and joints, but naturally you distribute your weight with each step, and will not experience this, the same goes for horses and other animals.

@neer muse The reason domesticated horses have a longer lifespan is certainly not the maintenance of their hooves. Without that they would just die much quicker compared to a wild horse.... ( or atleast get useless as lifestock, which would mean death by euthanasia). It's much better nutrition compared to the wild and a freakin vet with medicine that keeps domesticated horses alive longer. But sure It's probably also the invention of the manicure that made us humans able to increase our lifespan and not the abundance of nutrients and medicine we have acess to........? ????????

Life span for a domestic horse is about 30 years.

Really varies on how well they're looked after. A well cared for domestic horse can live 30 to 40 years but some people send horses off to slaughter in their 20s as they arent able to work so well

Lady who owned horses near us (south Florida) had a few that reached their 30s but we're definitely slower and were pasture horses for the rest of their days

I knew a riding school pony who lived well into his 40s, and another who got to 38. I think the record is somewhere in the 60s but that's very unusual. Ponies seem longer lived than larger horse breeds too.

I once dated a lady that had horses at her house and I actually got to see this done by a professional that this skill was past down through the family his dad did it ,grandpa etc so dude knew what he was doing...it is pretty cool to see this done in person if your ever given a chance to see it...but man that girl was crazy 😂😂✌️

It *looks* violent and uncaring. Also I seen it many times and I know it is the opposite. And I love the idea of the horse going "ahhhh finally 😌" in its mind... If it would hurt, the horse would go nuts! So, really no harm done at all. And it is the shortest I have seen so far

Most horses at some point will be difficult to shoe and trim, but they eventually get used to it. It also helps the owner frequently cleans out the horses hooves on their own, with a hoof pick.

@@katvloom6542 if done correctly, shoeing/trimming is painless. Horses typically do need to be taught as allowing another creature (a predator if you will) hold their foot rendering the horse vulnerable goes against a prey animal’s natural instincts. Many horses that are raised with people do well and adapt easily.

@For yt i can't begin to tell you how wrong and uneducated you are. This process is not only painless, but required for a healthy horse. Look up what happens when a hoof isn't trimmed.

@For yt It looks aggressive, but it’s not. It’s exactly like a manicure. Just like there’s no nerve endings in your fingerNAIL, there’s no nerve endings in the hoof wall or where he’s cutting. As an equestrian, clean out my lesson horse’s hooves before and after every lesson. They feel pressure, not pain.

It's like how humans didn't used to need to look after their teeth, they had a much better diet, with very little sugar. Lots of people have an assumption that in the Middle Ages all peasants had absolutely disgusting teeth, but that's just not that true. They didn't have toothbrushes, sure, but they still took care of their teeth, because they aren't stupid, they knew that their teeth helped them to eat, and they didn't have sugar eating holes in their teeth. Horses are the same, when humans aren't putting shoes on them and whatnot, they take care of themselves.

The main difference is the habitat as horses evolved to live in arid plains. This means lower nutrition in the food which makes them travel a lot more to get their calories. In addition, they have a symbiotic relationship with the bacteria that grows in the hoof. As the foot gets too long the strength of that section of the hoof wall to white line wanes allowing bacteria to grow in it and compromise it further. This allows it to break off. This usually happens if a horse has limited movement in a region, such as finding a lush source of food. The foot will overgrow in such a circumstance.

@@lauriepenner350 if the horse was in any discomfort it absolutely would pull away. It’s a matter of scale. If you heated up a paperclip and touched it briefly to the tip of a long, thick toenail, it would burn the keratin but not hurt you.

What a difficult job, deserving of much respect! Imagine a pedicurist, podiatrist, artist, horse handler, and blacksmith rolled into one person. This takes years of apprenticeship and experience. Not something you learn at school. Not to mention his portable furnace, wow! Amazing skill and work. Very impressed. Thank you for making horses feel better.
