www.EquitopiaCenter.com presents "Solving Horse Behavior Problems; Low-Stress, Effective Solutions" featuring Lauren Fraser, CHBC. Lauren Fraser is a Certified Horse Behavior Consultant with the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants. She is also the organization's horse division Chair, and a member of the application review committee. Horse behavior problems can be frustrating, annoying, or even downright dangerous. Behavior problems in horses may result from pain, fear, or
confusion during training. Unwanted behaviors, such as poor ground manners or being 'hard mouthed' may also be unknowingly created by inexperienced trainers. Horse behavior problems can occur under saddle - bucking, bolting, spooking etc - or when being handled - aggression, refusing to trailer load, being needle or farrier phobic, cribbing, biting, kicking etc. Punishment is commonly used in an attempt to stop unwanted behaviors, but the use of punishment can create additional behavior problems in the
horse (e.g. aggression), or may even make the problem behavior worse. It may also damage the trust between horse and trainer. In light of these potential side-effects, horse owners and trainers are wise to seek out other ways to resolve behavior issues.
Horse behavior consultants use a 'Least Invasive, Minimally Aversive' (LIMA) approach to solve horse behavior problems
(iaabc.org/about/LIMA). What this means is that consultants
carefully assess and address the many factors that can contribute to the problem behavior. They also choose retraining techniques that will be effective for that individual horse, and which carry minimal risk for creating further behavior problems. Some of the ways in which consultants address and resolve problems include:
-identifying and managing triggers for the unwanted behavior
-addressing any issues with management that may contribute to the problem -using counter-conditioning and desensitization to change the horse's negative emotional response to triggers (e.g. needles, farriers, the trailer) -using reinforcement-based training to teach the horse new and wanted behaviors, vs. using punishment to try to stop the unwanted behavior-teaching the horse alternative behaviors to occur in place of the unwanted behavior etc.
The techniques consultants use to resolve horse behavior problems are effective, are low-stress for the horse, and also enhance the bond between horse and owner.

I love and adore horses. They're so majestic imo. I think a horse and rider with a great bond and connection is a really excellent relationship.

I feel fortunate to have a trainer who is teaching me these philosophies so I have a better understanding of horses. It is unfortunate how many feel if a horse spooks or ‘acts out’ it is the horses fault etc not understanding it is their way of communicating to us something is wrong

@@braeburnhilliard8340 That is fantastic. It is one of the areas that we are working hard to get out there into the horse world.

Long training sessions with lots of repetition or drilling are often seen (by the horse) as harassment and lead to increasing resistance. Get a good response, maybe two, then work on something else.

Hi! I am leasing a horse who has some issues with going on hacks and is often scared of everything we walk past. More often than not he will continue walking but very alert. But, some times he will just turn around and walk home and when i try to turn him he starts bucking and jumping. I know i shouldn't let him think bucking means me getting off but whatever i do it just escalates and i end up jumping off and leading him for a bit then getting back up... how do i make trailrides comfortable again?

It is important to remember that horses are herd animals, flight animals and not designed to be ridden. Doing anything to try to insist that this horse keeps doing something that he is clearly very anxious about is not a good way to go. All of these natural instincts are a lot to overcome in order to do the things we want to do. The simplest answer to your current predicament is probably to try to ride with a buddy, preferably a horse who has some level of confidence being hacked out. Longer term solutions could be looked at by consulting with a behavior specialist to create a shaping plan that will work for this individual horse/rider combination. Hope that helps.

The horse does the unwanted behavior because the person or people taught him that behavior. It is never the horse's fault.
