In most areas in the u.s. there's a stereotype that dads are religous about thermostat temperatures (namely due to how much electric bills can cost just by a raise by a single degree in most areas) the joke being that the dad would overe exaggerate the importance of not touching the thermostat.

Kugelblitz is German, Kugel meaning sphere and Blitz meaning bolt/flash. So in German, for example slightly fat athletes are called Kugelblitz, as they are fast although they don't look like they are. I guess that's why she didn't appreciate it?
