Sorry to hear about that Barry, it goes to show that things like this can happen to anyone, not just the old and tech illiterate. Recently, I noticed my website would redirect to a web forum, and I was freaking out because I had taken my web server down. Looking back, it was probably just me not clearing the DNS records and my VPS provider giving the IP to someone else, still freaked me out tho :v

Glad to see you back If I had a suggestion, if you want a free video editor without having to resort to "creative" ways of obtaining one, go for DaVinci resolve, fully free, no adware or freeware bullshit, it's actually just free From what I've heard since I have very little editing experience, DaVinci resolve is pretty damn good, even the free option It does have a paid pro option if you need the extra features as well

stuff like this can happen to anyone, I'm glad to see your story because it reminds me of when i tried to download software from a source that i trusted and had command prompt pop up, i immediately change all the passwords on my accounts which took a few day to get all of them but also had to have family change passwords too because the had account info on my PC but still they managed to spend $2500 on a family members account but we caught it in time and told the bank and they reversed the transactions and make the necessary changes so they couldn't use that payment method again, we got luck too because the bank said they might not be able to do anything but they could. It can happen to everyone. I got hacked about half a year ago. Funny thing is, it was the same way, just with Premiere Pro.

After something similar happened to me I stopped downloading "non-official" releases of games and started looking for good alternatives for software. I highly recommend DaVinci Resolve or Kdenlive if you want video editors. And remember, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. Glad to know everything is okay now :)

Wait you didn't have 2FA for the Google accounts? I almost went through the same thing a few weeks ago if it weren't for my google accounts telling me to reset after they saw suspicious activity. The hacker sent me a creepy E-mail and started running $2400 worth of scam advertisements on my Facebook before I got it back. They even used my Twitter to push some crypto scam. Luckily no money was taken from my bank or PayPal and everything seems to be good now. All passwords have been reset and 2FA was added to the things that didn't already have them.

The core issue, I think, is that each time you run an executable (especially with administrator or trusted installer access) you essentially give it full control of your operating system. So having your whole filesystem (or most of it) accessed, removed or encrypted is a possibility. At that point the program can get access to program files, including your browser cookies, and that should be sufficient to get into most of your accounts. I remember you could get into someone else's Steam without knowing their username or password by copying over two specific files, not sure if that was subject to hardware or IP checks. A good way to vent that, other than finding distributors you trust, is probably to run the executable within a sandbox environment (like a virtual machine) and log all actions that the executable took or attempted to take. Then inspect that for suspicious behavior. You thought of similar when you decided to use your laptop as a guinea pig. I like that you made the video as a matter-of-fact chronological account. You just tell what you think happened, mentioning that it is likely your mistake. I think it helps vicariously experience the situation, which might help people deal with similar circumstances themselves.

Just out of curiosity...Did you have an antivirus/ anti malware running at the time? Like malwarebytes or kaspersky? And do you think the program was able to by pass them because it executed via powershell, if so?

This is why I hate pirating stuff, there are good alternatives to Sony Vegas, for example KdenLive, is open source, free and you can do a lot of the same work as Sony Vegas, I have it on my Linux PC, so if you are in pickle where Sony Vegas doesn't want to work, give KdenLive a try you may enjoy it.

I know how you feel as a fellow, uh, borrower of media that I already own. My favorite memories involve downloading something, seeing CMD or powershell opening up, and thinking "I'm in danger.".

I think if you switch you should probably switch to DaVinci Resolve instead of getting yourself trapped into the Adobe ecosystem by going with Premiere, DaVinci Resolve is pretty amazing, especially the pro version but the free version doesn't feel like a typical free software (I think they mainly make money by selling the professional editing equipment hardware and cameras) should resolve your issue with Vegas.

The only way this could happen is if you save your passwords in google chrome and not a dedicated password manager that propperly encrypts them, as chrome saves them in plain text. Also its good pratice to run any file downloaded thru VirusTotal.

same sort of thing happened to me recently, downloaded some adobe programs off a website i trust and use for other things, only for it to be a virus. Had to quickly nuke my pc and change all my passwords. Moral of the story really is that sometimes, just buy the damn product

My old instagram account was hacked and cause it was connected to my Facebook that I used for marketplace that got hacked then some of my friends seen what they posted and stupidly clicked the links and got there stuff hacked as well as the guy that hacked it was using my fb as some ad service lucky I had nothing connected to them but they went through it all

Reminds me of the time I had my Spotify, Twitch, PSN, Epic Games and Yahoo email hacked all in the same week lol. It was such a miserable experience but I won't lie, the Spotify one was kinda funny. Basically my profile picture on Spotify is normally just a pic of Viego from league but it got changed to a random picture of what looked like a female k-pop star and they added this massive playlist to my library filled with songs I would never listen to. I realized it was hacked and so I tried to change the password but the email on the account got changed to something Chinese lmao. It took me 3 days to deal with their customer support and get my account back so I feel your pain. Also, I use 1337x to get my programs these days and I've pretty good success. Only time I got a virus was when I used pirate bay and managed to nuke my friend's PC (I fixed it and built him a new computer a few months ago) so it worked out lol.

Similar thing happened to me. For some reason, it was only my Google Account and Instagram. Although they did change the phone number on my Google Account, I was quick enough and managed to secure it. Instagram forced itself open on my phone a day or 2 after saying my account was at risk of being suspended unless I verified my number. Upon doing so, I saw my entire account was different, other than my @. They didn't message anyone, but now I have ton's of random followers that I think are Russian? Changed my pfp back and unfollowed the accounts, some might still be following me, but the account's mine at least, even if I barely use it.
