The "pan" used for the meat is actually for the coal, so it doesn't cover the bottom of the grill. This is because air travels through there and supplies oxygen for combustion, keeping the coals lit and giving a good cooking heat. You do not actually want flames as these burn quick and only burns the surface.

well, first the point of a charcoal chimney is to not use lighter fluid or chemicals. you're supposed to put rolled up paper in the bottom area...place chimney on grill. put in your charcoal..light paper which will light charcoal and get it going...Wait! when coals are glowing red and start turning white, dump out into grill, arrange and then grill. damn man, they come with directions. If you use the charcoal without the chimney, put charcoal in a pile like a pyramid. squirt on some lighter fluid. Light. WAIT. When coals are turned white and glowing red, gently arrange in grill to your liking and then grill. The directions are on the back of the charcoal bag. I'd also get a better grill. A weber globe shaped grill circulates the heat a lot better and isn't as flimsy. That grill looks like it's going to fall apart any minute. Vent on grill should be open when you light it. When cooking, you can adjust the vent to allow more or less air in. When you are done cooking, close the vent and make sure lid is closed so the coals go out. Someone needs to pay for a media share youtube video on how to use charcoal next time you do a media share! Still a funny video but geez, that food looked hella awful!

Wubby, in case you ever read this: In order to light a charcoal grill you start by putting charcoal in the chimney. You then light the coals and let them burn out. The chimney helps draw in air so that they heat faster. Wait until the coals turn bright red, then wait a little longer until they start to turn white. This will take about 10-20 minutes and the coals will stop being on fire, but they will continue to heat up. Once they have gone past red and into white/ash, they are intensely hot and are ready to pour into the grill. You are now ready to cook. Charcoal will stay hot for a long time. You can choose to pull the coals out if the chimney earlier if you need cooler coals.

Why not just use a propane grill they have very nifty propane accessories

Starting a grill is more or less a 11 minute job and then 10 of them minutes are just waiting for the fluid to set into the coal, then you just start it and its done. Im not even sure how he keep failing.

This is my dad and I’s fav grilled corn recipe we make a rub butter with bbq rub, butter and pepper. You put it in the corn then wrap it in foil. then put it on the grill. After about 15 minutes youre corn is ready.

its so insanely easy to light charcoal, that i'm honestly impressed he can't do it. last time i lit a grill i was extra lazy, and just dumped kerosene onto the coals in my weber grill, threw in 2 or 3 lit matches, closed the lid, and came back an hour later. you only really need to wait until at least some of the coals are white hot before cooking if you are that lazy. wubby literally opened the lid before a single coal could fully light.

I might not be the only one commenting this. But the chimney is actually meant to eliminate the use of lighter fluid. You put charcoal on one side and either crumbled newspaper or natural fire starters on the other. Then you stick a lighter into the holes or grates and light the newspaper or fire starter. It lights the coals and doesn't cause a.chemically taste to enter the food. 😊

The fire goes at the BOTTOM of a chimney, like how chimneys work? Coals in the upper basket combined with the specific holes in the metal draw air in the bottom and up through the coals. Once the fire goes out on top they're goid

I'm surprised this needs to be explained, but charcoal does not need to be flaming to be "lit". In fact, if the charcoal is flaming then you should not be cooking on it, grey charcoal without any flame is what you're looking for. Also you load newspaper or a torn up paper bag under the chimney and light the paper to start the coals, you should not be using lighter fluid when using a chimney.

I saw the same grill at my Wal-Mart. I can confirm that the steel plate thing is in fact for the coals and not meant to be cooked on.
