How I am hoping to save myself $$$ on my Grocery Bill

I have been saving all my receipts from the supermarket and it has given me an idea of how much I need to grow to help save heaps of $$ at the shop. Whatever I don't grow I will buy in season and help keep my grocery budget down. Well, that's the plan for now, I hope my body will allow me to garden this year!

Well done Stacey. Great ideas for filing everything. My late Dad grew a tomato called Dr Walter. Beautiful. Every year, he supplied so many others around the Mt area with plants and tomatoes grown from the year prior seeds. He would go to the hot pools and got known as Tomato Tom, as he gave away either the plants or tomatoes. He was so proud of his garden and I get the guilts, because every time I popped in, before or after work, I busied myself with other things and didn't go out and see it, until I was asked to. I know that it hurt his feelings, but not until after he had left us 😔. An ex farmer, he kept himself very busy, until his heart said no more.

I have been growing for two years and the savings are worth the effort. I am now saving seeds from my plants by letting one plant go to seed and collecting the seeds plus with tomatoes let the tomatoes that are damaged fall onto the ground and new free ones come up new season. Maybe those pigs and chickens could have their own veg patch they can access by throwing all the expired seeds in there garden area and they get what ever comes up. Could be a fun experiment.

Love your down to earth attitude and your honesty. I have a small garden but love growing vegetables. We live at the beach so our garden was mostly sand to start with. I bury vegetable peelings instead of having a compost bin. It works so well. Fish frames also get buried and my veggie garden is now good soil with lots of fat worms. Can’t wait to plant this summer’s crops. We are having a holiday for 5 weeks soon so have decided to get planting on our return in mid September so I can keep an eye on everything. Keep doing things your way I love your vlogs. Many thanks for sharing your kitchen, garden and time. 😊

A slice of tomato, with a little soil, is my usual go to. I grow them in pots because it is easier to move them if the spidermites find them or a cold snap hits. You may also find amaranth (we call it morogo but I think it is called baby spinach overseas) makes for a great crop that is more of a weed but great for human food and animal feed. The chickens, especially, love the seeds. Loving the extra diversity and the reality of how not everything goes right - but that its okay when things go wrong.

@@Tawadeb no I follow the edible garden approach by Craig Castree. His approach is no dig and poly culture where you plant a minimum of 4 plant families together and plant something every day. Today my seed was potatoes (supposed to be planted yesterday) todays carrots (another I plant together by seed tape, so in a row) my seedling was Florence fennel I planted 4 dotted around the garden. My herb was more coriander under the elderberry and I cut back the grape vines. I’m in Melbourne

I bought a little table top hydroponic set-up from Amazon and grow lettuce and Asian greens in it. Over this winter I got a patio type cherry tomato and tried it out as well. Not an every day harvest, but I surprised quite a few people at our local produce swap with tomatoes in August! I got a second one from a friend and am going to try some bush beans next.

You will save heaps by growing your own. I live on my own and harvested 12 organic, kent pumpkins spray free. Last week they sold at $10 each in Woolworths(not organic quality). Herbs, chillies and garlic are good value too. I find I spend heaps on milk products…cheeses, milk, butter, yoghurt, which have increased dramatically in price in the past 12 months. I now buy raw milk from a local dairy.

We buy a heap of milk products as well. I would still love to get into cheese making. Well done on all the different ways you are able to cut spending down. :)

I suggest that the next time you buy a capsicum that you save the seeds, dry them & then I started mine off by putting them on damp kitchen paper, then popping them into a plastic bag, sealed & they grew in it, then I transplanted the seedlings into containers, until they were big enough to plant out into the garden. I had two years with them before they finally died but by that time I had more seeds. The same goes for tomatoes & other veggies with seeds that you eat & enjoy & so save the seeds. My daughter used to sit on my back stairs & spit her watermelon seeds out into my yard & a couple of them grew between the pavers & I left them & ended up with two huge watermelons that I gave away as I can't eat them. I used to do that with cucumbers as well & even did it with an avocado seed, only I didn't bring it with me & now I regret it as it would have been giving me fruit by now. I have a couple of feijoa plants growing in my planter from seed when Woolies imported them from NZ a few years ago & maybe one day they will flower. Actually when are the fruits ready for eating? I suspect that I should have planted them into the garden as seeing yours, they are rather large! Ooops!! They were really delicious but I have never seen them on sale again here in Sydney.
@FarmersWifeHomestead
@FarmersWifeHomestead Месяц назад
Over here they flower in December and fruit in the Autumn. Depending on the variety, we get ours around March and April. You need more than one as they need to pollinate each other. Feijoa is also pollinated by birds rather than bees. I hope the trees you have, fruit for you :)

@FarmersWifeHomestead
@FarmersWifeHomestead Месяц назад
@donnanorman340 It already has a 8-strand wired fence around it but the piggies are small enough to go under it. The garden has now got chicken wire all along the bottom of the fence to stop them from getting into it. We don't normally have pigs out of their pen. :)

@glendaeden4446 What a shame it wasn't cut well for you. It will be perfect for canning up. Quart size (1L) needs pressure canning for 90 minutes. You could always use it as stir-fry meat and cut it into strips.
