I made these today. Adding mashed potato was such a weird concept for me (we have sausage rolls here in South Africa too, so I'm quite used to eating them), but the mashed potato extended the sausage mix so much and really did work well! The end result is great and now I've got a bunch extra I can pop in the freezer for easy snacks as well :D
Check out Lemon Tree in Eldoraigne, Gauteng. All their savoury produce (made inhousei) are incredibly tasty!! I think they add onion, garlic, coriander, cumin, and a bit of chilli flakes... maybe some Mrs Balls chutney. Oh, but it's to die for!!! People drive across provinces to get to it! But I think they also currier all over South Africa. All their savouries are amazing! And then we get to the sweets... oh my goodness!!! Exceptional!!! Proper traditionally made cakes... Their Orange Syrup Cake is basically what my son is made of... ;)
Thanks @michoot for letting us know how they turned out. I also thought the mash potato was a weird concept but sure is better than adding bread crumbs. I had heard of Mrs Balls Chutney being added into a sausage roll. Good I am going to give these a bash. Have a lovely day.
The US here. Ham rolls for appetizers are very common. The basic recipe is a flour tortilla spread with cream cheese and a very thin slice of ham (referred to as a deli slice). You can add other ingredients such as pickle relish, shredded cheddar cheese, chopped nuts, diced onion or green onion, finely diced or shredded vegetables, raw spinach, etc. Rolled up and slice into 1" pieces without baking so served cold as is. The other night, we had jalapeno poppers. Love these. Large jalapeno peppers (some are mild, some are hot but they lose of a lot of heat when baked to the point of going limp and their bright green color turns dull) sliced long ways in half and cut off the stem, any white veins and seeded. Remove the seeds in a ventilated room with a spoon under the cold sink water faucet so the hotness doesn't spray in your eyes. Make any sort of cheese mixture to fill them. I make a mixture of sautéed diced onion, cooked diced bacon, a squirt of whatever type prepared mustard, ground or chopped smoked almonds, cream cheese and swiss cheese all melted in the microwave and then stir in mayonnaise. Sorry, no measurements, it's whatever looks good. Fill the peppers and bake on 350 F for about 20-25 minutes or until starting to go mushy. Tip - wash the pepper off your hands with cold water and rub your hands over the stainless steel faucet or sink. Off topic - Save the jalapeno pepper stems and caps for yogurt starter. Make sure to fingernail off any pepper flesh from the caps and use that to flavor another dish. Yes, weird, but works. Do the heated milk and cooling. Add 6 stems (can use whatever hot or sweet peppers you wish and they can be frozen and thawed) (your mileage may vary on how many) to each quart of milk and incubate as usual. I've gone through various incubation methods and like sitting a quart canning jar without a lid in a slightly warmed oven. Heat the oven on the lowest temperature for 60 seconds and turn off heat and then set the jars in for about 6 hours. Can heat the oven at the lowest temperature and turn it off once or twice during the incubation time. The first batch will have a hint of the pepper but the following chains won't have any pepper taste. Can freeze the first batch for starter or make a savory cheesecake or veggie dip, etc. if you don't want a peppery taste for your breakfast yogurt.
I have just added this to my Farmers Wife Homestead cooking wishlist. I am going to tackle the cheese bread rolls this weekend. I would love to see a video about how you put together a grazing platter on the cheap with the savouries and different finger sandwich fillings. 😊 Thank you for teaching us the good ol kiwi way. And loved hearing the cows in the background. Took me right back to my childhood.
❤ Thanks for the link here Stacey. I have enjoyed writing my list for my shop on Thursday. My freezer is clean & ready for some yummy food. Binge watching you over our long weekend was satisfying until it made me hungry, which I haven't been since falling ill with covid. So thank you so much. Much love & *Virtual hugs* 💜💋💜
I shall be enjoying all of your yummy recipes. You get sick of your own at times. Though my meatloaf recipe (never the same twice) is an absolute must. Thanks again for all the effort you put into your channel, I am engrossed. 💜💋💜
Made four meals yesterday of salmon fish cakes which were uber delish. Had them with home made coleslaw. I am beginning my freezer adventure. Thanks for inspiring me. Much love & *Virtual hugs* 💜💋💜
Usa here. We don’t have sausage rolls here so I made yours except I used regular breakfast sausage, sage, caramelized onions, sautéed mushrooms, and mashed potatoes. Would love your tomato relish recipe. My family loved them. I made them for a church brunch. 75 of them. They were gone in a flash. Everyone wanted my recipe. Thank you for sharing and teaching me.
You're the best home cook in the Southern Hemisphere. Just came across your channel and watched a number of your uploads. Your home cooking is amazing ! No piss farting around. You know your way around the home kitchen and cook from scratch accordingly. Almost a lost art these days with young ones living on takeaway and not knowing how to boil a potato ! Well done - just subscribed, keep your channel going !!! You're the BEST !!!!! 👍👍👍
Hi Stacey just a wee suggestion can you let us viewers know the size of you cup and your tablespoon as I have noticed that in America a cup is only 237ml and a tablespoon is 15ml its mucked up some of my recipes here when I bought mine they were 250ml and 20ml respectively and I didn’t realise they were not the same worldwide. Love this recipe 👍🏼
Our tablespoons (NZ) are 15ml.... Australia's are 20ml. We use a metric cup in NZ of 250ml. I can't comment on what Stacey is using but I am guessing that it is the same. 😊
I thought the mash potato was a weird concept but sure is better than adding bread crumbs. I had heard of Mrs Balls Chutney being added into a sausage roll (S.A. recipe).I am going to give these a bash and thank you for sharing they look absolutely delicious. Yes I would like to see hoe you make the tomato relish. Have a lovely day.
I've lived in NZ for almost 30 years and have never made homemade sausage rolls ... until I watched your video and made them over the weekend. :) Yum yum! The entire whānau loved them! Thanks Stacey!
Indeed this is a quick & easy snack l do these for my husband & kids when they do lawns while lm inside cleaning & baking we add anything & everything but mostly cheese & chives but l make my own flaky pastry. They look absolutely delicious 😋 😋😋
I finally made these today! Sooooo good. I managed to fit half the recipe in my airfryer and save the other half for later. Id never used mashed potatoe in it before.Game changer! Kids wanted to know why it was so soft and smooth. I didn't gave leftover mash potatoes but i always have potato flakes just incase. Worked well. Thankyou!!!❤❤❤
Yes I do also make this recipe the only difference is that I put some frozen peas in as well they sure are tasty and great to have on hand for when visitors pop in.
I can’t wait to make these. The price of sausage rolls at the bakery is crazy. Curried salmon pastries in those little shells are so nice. Nothing better than a bite sized delicious pastry
Thx Stacey from Oz 🇦🇺💞 Loving this recipe, using leftover mash as an extender, pure genius I put in grated apple and 1/2 tspn of curry powder in mine Would love to see your tomato relish recipe too See how it stacks up to my Nans 😉
I make sausage rolls with sausage meat and make up some stuffing mix blend if together with extra herbs and spices everyone loves them cooked in flakey pastry very nice
Hi Stacey, I make mine the same, with the addition of grated granny smith, carrot and zucchini, plus some crushed garlic. One of my favourite snacks and I have less guilt with the vegies😂😂😂
Mmmm sausage rolls! Sooooo delicious. Never had them with relish and mashed potatoes! Great idea. 👏 👏 👏 As well as pizza rolls I ❤ sour cream and mushroom pinwheels.
Yes, tomato relish recipe, please! Along w a video on your skin care regimen - you have such a beautiful complexion! 😊 I look forward to making this for my family. Please give us a peek at your cattle, I hear them bawling outside, it must be feeding time! 😅
I make a huge batch of tomato relish every couple of years. It’s great with so many things. I often pour a jar into stew. Recipe has been passed on through a few generations in my family
That did indeed come together quick & easy! And looks tasty as well! A couple of these would make a great "side" to a light soup, such as tomato, or even a broth, to make a complete meal. Or even with a salad. So many ideas! As always, another great recipe Stace, and always a joy to see a new video from you!
Sausages Rolls are my favorite. Never maked them with mash patatoes or tomato railis. New recepy for me. I am from the Netherlands and I not we because the recepy is in fact English. I use to take a tabllespoon of mustard, unions, garlic, 3 tablespoons of dry breathcrums salt pepper and a bith of notmec. The meat I use is Rind, or lamm. It taste delicious when the dough is made with butter. Gone try your combination, don,t know if I can find that Tomatoreaslih. Do you have a recepy? Thank you Stacy.
Your sausage rolls look great Stacy I make mine with 2 slices of bread soaked in. Water squeezed out and mixed in the meat and parsley little mixed herbs love your videos in Australia xx
I made them once long ago, and used breadcrumbs. But I must say the mashed potato sounds great too. 🙂 going to try again with these because they're too expensive from the local bakery.
Those look yummy. Definitely going to have to try these. My grandson loves sausage. I would love to have your tomato relish recipe. ( I've never had sausage rolls before)
I've always heard about these, and wanted to try them, but we don't have them here in the US. Again thank you for posting this recipe. Can't wait to try it. ❤ Also can we PLEASE have the Tomato Relish recipe???
I cannot wait to make these, they look so delicious! My favorite go-to appetizer is just sausage cheese balls. But I think those sausage rolls might replace mine 😂 Thanks doll 😊
Here in Louisiana I’ve not heard of Sausage Rolls. More typical are ‘Hand Pies’ that are fried & commonly known as Natchitoches Meat Pies(pronounced nack-eh-tesh). Imagine they could easily be adapted to Your method. Yes please, I’d enjoy seeing the tomato relish video. I’ve made & canned green tomato relish & it’s most divine on a hot dog!
The tip about the mash is brilliant. Where we live at the moment where we are I cant get sausage meat , so use butchers chicken burgers and add sage and onion stuffing(hydrated) and some extra sage , a nod to my Lincolnshire heritage
Those are going to be the best football snack, I am going to add shredded cheese with mustard honey dip… yumm! I wish you would have shown your cows mooing in the back ground, I would have loved it! Ty for the recipe, can’t wait to try
Great idea!! Yes cheese is very nice in them as well. I tried to show the cows but my camera didn't pick them up very well. I will definitely be getting you some footage soon.
I've never used Mash potatoes in sausage rolls before but i have sweated off fine chopped celery carrot and onion mixture and added that, strangely enough you can't detect them in the finished product, a good way to hide veggies from kids.
They look great! My mum lives in Cambridge, batch in Raglan. Last year I got to volunteer my time in a shop in Kihikihi and one in Levin. Total of three months. I've been making sausage rolls and pies in the commercial kitchen at the bakey I work at in the states. (They are nice enough to let me do test batches in their facility) Plan is to open up a meat pie shop on the Oregon coast here in the States. Wish I could attatch a few photos! My chicken sausage rolls with cream cheese and jalapenos seem a big hit. Steak and cheese, steak and mushroom pies, creamy chicken with capsicum or chicken bacon and mushroom also pretty popular for the pies. I've watched a few of your videos and everything always looks so good!
I make mine using fresh breadcrumbs instead of the mashed potato. That also makes them nice and light, and I think the breadcrumbs absorb any fat from the sausage meat.
Thank you for another awesome video. My only question which may make me look silly his how do you freeze them. Free flow on tray then put in a zip lock bag with the air let out . Just checking thanks Stacey
Love your recipies! Would love to try these.since I don't have any of your tomato relish, what options do you recommend for a substitute? Hearing the cows (?) In the background makes me curious what your farm looks like.
Hi Stacey. Ive never made sausage rolls before and can see what a great idea to make in advance and freeze. Can you tell me is there a silicone baking sheet placed in your baking tray for your large rolls? In other words, u didnt need to grease the liner or the tray?
Where did you buy sausage meat from as the supermarket mix is terrible. Otorohanga 😊 DO you buy from the butcher in Raglan as they have lovely sausages ❤
