Proof there IS something we can do about a motorist pulling out on us if we think ahead and ride defensively. Imagine Mr. untrained on his Fireblade doing 50mph in a T shirt here! This situation was turned from a potential road death into a minor inconvenience.

I think anticipation should be drummed in to all learners, just because you have priority "right of way" does not say you will get it, drivers do all kinds of crazy things and if you expect the guy to pull out its not so much of a shock when they do,

Rode motorcycles & driving since the early 1970’s. Probably used the horn twice. Never found the need. Hate it when idiots use it due to lack of patience, awareness, skill, inadequacy etc, etc. I always shoulder check even in my car. Keep coming back to this channel for advice & awareness. This man has nearly four decades of experience being an instructor. Easy going. Just take what he says as fact. Probably saved a few lives in his time too. Definitely deserves at least an MBE.

You're so right. My philosophy is, I assume I am invisible and expect the driver to do the wrong thing, I have not been disappointed so many times.

Yes, agreed. And it's a very important point. The horn to show you are there is only useful if done early enough so he can stop pulling out on you, rather than after he's gone past "the point of no return". Once he's past the point of no return you just want him to keep going and not dither - so don't distract him with the horn in this case.....

Very good point about using the horn, as recommended in "Motorcycle Roadcraft"(the police riders handbook). But always remember to give a friendly wave when you get their attention, so as not to inflame the situation.

I liked the drift left on that last shoulder check... then the correction back :) Your correct though. Anticipation and planning helps change that situation from a surprise into an expected therefore allowing the rider some time and thinking space to do something about it. Good little illustration of a Developing hazard...

Just want to say cheers Russ, for all the helpful advice you give out. I've been using your videos as reference while riding my 125 since September. I'm confident your videos have helped me countless times while out on the road. I had an assessment yesterday and the chap said I was ready to upgrade to 600's. I start my training next Sunday. I'm ridiculously excited about learning how to ride bigger bikes. :) Cheers fella!

Apologies if this has already been asked, but why did the rider perform a right lifesaver and then proceed to move over to the left? I would have performed a left lifesaver to check no other vehicles have squeezed in that gap- more likely to happen after braking in situations like this too. Many thanks and safe riding, Lee.

I thought the point of this video is showing how we can avoid others causing us to crash, not going into detail about where we do a shoulder check. There was no danger where he did it and if he wants to and it's safe, why not? Some people always have to pick fault. Good video rider!

These situations wouldnt piss me off so much if it wasnt for the fact that I never seem to ever pull out on motorcyclists or cars (I ride a motorbike). Even with my extremely limited vision due to my helmet taking up my entire peripheral vision, I can still see oncoming vehicles. The bike was easily visible from the vans perspective personally. But yes, agreed, mr 50mph fireblade would be very critically injured, and would be in the wrong.

Here's a good tip, if you watch bike racing and know the flag system, think of urban riding as constant yellow flag moments ie show caution and slow it down in urban environments because you'll have lots an lots of blue van moments 😉👍

@grahamzx9r Agreed, it's an old video AND is aimed at putting basics into new riders more than advanced riders so gets them into a basic "observation" habit. We encourage mirrors more now. Cheers

Very good info. Dominant position is key. Not being seen is quickly becoming a reality for me..

@daveinutopia...There's no harm in sounding your horn at all. Many thanks for your comment.

Perhaps I dont get it, but a life saver to resume, takes your eyes off the road ahead for too long in urban traffic, because there is more chance of something happening ahead than to your rear offside, also the slowing down life saver confuses me, what are you looking for? that would stop you slowing down. Cheers

I had this today ... some tw*t pulling out of his drive decided it would be a good idea to come half way in to my lane but as I knew he was going to be a tw*t I was close to the curb ready to scare him with my horn. Don't even want to know what the idiot who decided it'd be a good idea to enter a round about as I'm coming round was thinking ...

Far too many shoulder checks, there is little point looking over your shoulder when a car is clearly coming in the other direction filling the space of anybody that could possibly be overtaking.

It's an old video. Agreed on the shoulder checks. What about the van anticipation? That's the point of this upload.

Bearing in mind I'd slowed down, no, he wasn't near due to my anticipation and defensive riding. The point is if another rider was speeding up that road without anticipation as many do, that WOULD have been a collision.

So many over educated dicks, over complicating the simple, pleasures & skills of riding a motorcycle on UK roads. Seeking a Doctorate where a few certificates, after the show of practical skills will suffice.

What is your opinion about those helmets (Reevu) that have the rear view mirror incorporated inside of it? Are they improving safety? Thanks

simple yet effective. some people i have spoke to say this sort of things a chor :s. if you always do this sort of thing it only takes it to save you once and it will no longer be a chor and become secend nature.

Everytime I take my bike out,Triumph Trophy 1200,I seem to become invisible to car and van drivers! So tend to ride as if other road users have passed their test with the Stevie Wonder Driving School, most of the time Im proved right. By the way I drive a big white van at work,so am aware of bikes.Keep it shiny side up.
