How I BACK my WALL RUGS | 3 Ways to Finish Your Tufted Wall Hanging

I love making rugs and wall rugs are my favorite. Here are three of my favorite ways to finish a wall rug - soft-backed, hard-backed and framed!
Soft-backed wall rugs are probably the first way most people learn to finish a rug. This technique simply uses a felt or fabric backing to cover the back of the rug with a d-ring or loop to hang it from. Because this is soft and can lay flat it can also double as a cute table mat!
Hard-backing is my personal favorite way to finish a wall rug. A slightly more advanced version of a softbacking this involves wrapping a piece of hardboard with felt and then stapling your finished peice to it. A sawtooth hanger is nailed into the back for hanging. This technique is great for keeping your tufting piece from sagging or folding against the wall.
Frame finishing is an option if you run out of glue! For smaller wall rugs you can display them in a picture frame. The trick is to get a frame with a matteboard and use this as the template for your wall rug. After tufting you can use a piece of double sided tape to help hold it in place in the frame and voila!

Can you put a wooden dowel along the top and bottom border for larger scale pieces with heavy weight, like rectangular panels, in order to keep it from waffling when hanging on a wall? Then technically it could be rolled like a thick scroll for easy transport.. maybe? Thoughts??

thank you! I really had no materials for any of this, and as the list of requirements grew I became disheartened. I was afraid I didn't have the tools or workspace to tuft, let alone create backings and mounts to put them all walls. my grandmother had a HUGE collection of yarn. I wish I had saved it after she died. I had no idea how expensive it all was! but to be honest I have nowhere to store it in my little apartment so I can't regret too much. I'll have to get quite savvy with space saving if I'm going to start tufting!
@ghost-fs7th
@ghost-fs7th 2 года назад
You talk about "texture on the walls... art that you can touch..." this is specifically why I want to start tufting. I used to be very creative, I drew everyday in middle school and highschool, and for a couple years after graduating. But after I started working full time, it was just dead in the water. All I could do was come home, walk my dog, eat and sleep. But I've realized this is no way to live. I want to LIVE. I finally opened my eyes and looked around, and noticed my room was so stale, like a hospital. I'd never had the time or energy to decorate. I'd be embarrassed to have anyone over. I needed color. I was just going to buy other people's works on Etsy, but I definitely couldn't afford more than a few, and I wanted all 4 walls of my room COVERED. Back to the original point of this comment (sorry, sidetracked) I'm autistic, and the thought of having 3D textured art on my walls I could just admire and touch to my heart's content seemed absolutely perfect. I understand creating the rugs isn't much cheaper than buying them, but I'm hoping it will get me back into making art again. Thanks to people like you I feel it might actually be achievable, and not just a nice thought.

Ahhhhhh yea I was thinking that may be possible but I was concerned it may bow over the dowel. I also thought you could attach it with loops from the top going directly through the piece but I’ve heard that it can pull the piece apart if it’s too heavy.

Hi!! Thank you so much for this amazing informative video! I was wondering, I know you joked about it but IS cardboard an option to use as backing? I have a medium-size rug that I want to back with something with a little more structure than felt, but I don't want to commit to hardboard because I don't have any tools to cut it down to the exact size I need:( (unless this is something they can cut it for you at home depot... this is my first time making a rug and I know nothing) Thank you Sam!!
@SamMadeThat
@SamMadeThat 2 года назад
You probably could but what I would do is still back your piece with felt, then cover your cardboard with felt and then just staple your piece to the covered cardboard. I wouldn’t do this to sell but just something for yourself it would be nice enough and then if for some reason the cardboard got damaged or bent or wet somehow you could easily replace it. I hope that helps!

Sam, I’m a beginner and just used Elmer’s glue on the back of some wall hangings for the first time. Even after using lots of glue, my Elmers pieces are nowhere near as stiff as yours. How much Elmers or how many layers did you use? I’d like to achieve a bit more stiffness with my glue so the pieces don’t curl on the edges too much. Thank you!
@SamMadeThat
@SamMadeThat 2 года назад
Hey! I’m not sure how to describe how much I use but I only use one layer and try to really work it in an even layer. I make sure every strand of yarn and backing I can see is coated. Curling edges can be caused by over tufting and/or cutting it off the frame before it’s fully dry! 💕
@jordansangmeister
