I figure i will get to my backlog when i retire. My plan is to be an old man in a recliner playing games that are 30, 40, or 50 years old. Then i will tell my grand kids that my games are older than they are lol

That’s been me for 10 years already. Weight training kept me away from games for 5 years. It’s been a daunting game of catch-up since coming back. Super Derek was right about when you have kids. Most of your free waking minutes do go to them. When they go to sleep, your time goes to your other half. It’s not easy, but nothing good in life ever comes easy.

I had a similar experience. I grew up in the 80s and 90s and fell in love with RPGs after playing Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy on the NES in 1990. RPGs were and still are my favorite genre and I played all of them I could through the 90s and into the 2000s. In 2002 I dropped out of college and started a small business with my two best friends. I had a serious girlfriend at the time and the business so I didn't have time for gaming and felt like the time I spent playing games was time that could be better spent working to grow the business or with my loved ones. So I quit and didn't play any video games whatsoever for 13 years. In 2015 after my business had failed, my longtime girlfriend and I were broken up, I had my driver's license revoked, and I was fresh out of rehab, I was depressed and looking for something to do with my time. I heard Final Fantasy 14 was a good game and thinking about the series it reminded me of the good times I'd had as a kid playing 1-10. I didn't have anything else positive going on in my life so I thought what the heck and bought it for PC. I played the heck out that game on my cheap laptop on low settings, but had a blast and met several cool people along the way. That experience spring boarded me back into the gaming world and I haven't looked back since. I get what you are saying about it being daunting to play the games you missed as I've tackled a bunch of games that came out between 2002 and 2015, but it's impossible to play them all. I just had to come to peace with the idea that it'll never happen, which is hard for a completionist like myself who feels compelled to play every game they would like and do everything in those games. Just focus on series you really like, or find ones that have a good reputation so you don't end up wasting your time and money on the chaff when there are so many wonderful games to be played. Sorry for going on like this, but your comment really struck home with me. Good luck with your backlog and happy playing!

I use a guide and play on easy sometimes. I do enjoy exploration, but if i know it's a 60 or 70 hour game, I gotta get everything out of it in one go, cause I'm probably never going to play it again. And my wife is addicted to kdramas, so we each take a couple of nights a week for her to binge those and me to play rpgs. It really helps, although my backlog is still a beast.

A few years ago I found myself starting new jrpgs and falling off of them at around the same point, which was usually around the start of the second half. I just felt like I didn’t have the time. Recently I’ve been really taking my time with them and while that means I don’t get to play every new jrpg that comes out on release, I’m not rushing through potentially good ones. And like you I used to feel like I had to play every single one but I just don’t feel that way anymore. There are some franchises/sub genres that just aren’t for me.

I emulate games and use exp and gold multiplier codes. I reach the recommended level for the boss and turn them off. Rinse and repeat. This saves a lot of mindless grinding time. That was fine when I was a teenager, but I have very limited gaming time now. This way, I still get to enjoy the challenge of story of the games.

@@JDphones17 I understand a younger gamer not wanting to sit and do the grinding you need to do in the original Dragon Warrior or original version of Final Fantasy 1, where the games could be beat in one sitting if you didn't have to to excessive grinding. Back in those days, the grinding was part of what made the games engrossing and artificially made them seem longer than they really were. But most of the later games kind of solved that and you usually level up at the pace you need to without much mindless grinding. It's funny, though, that I don't have a problem with grinding in some of these earlier games, but I can't stand going thru hours long tutorials you get in modern games.

I LOVE this! My backlog is ever growing and most of my gaming time tends to get eaten up by Dead by Daylight. And I think it's the daunting task of deciding which game to settle down with that keeps me from actually doing so. I already keep notebooks listing my games by genre in hopes that will help but I will definitely be implementing this method and hopefully start chipping away at that backlog. Thanks so much for this! 😁

It's pretty cool that Derek's video inspired you, and I really like the list-making and categorization idea! Like I mentioned on his video, I've been keeping a journal with similar notes (having to write by hand helps me a bit more than using a document, personally) and I also use the list to keep a note of where I was and what to do next when I play a game, so if I end up away from it for a long time, I'm not totally lost xD

I absolutely love your word document. I need to do something like this myself with over 1000+ games in my backlog. At 45 years of age I feel you about life, job and other things taking up my time. I am saddened though that you and I had such different experiences with Radiata Stories and Rogue Galaxy on the PS2. Those are among some of my favorite games. Radiata was so neat with all the characters. Reminded me very loosely of Suikoden. And I Loved Rogue Galaxy due to the battle system and quirky characters. You almost broke my heart though on Shadow of the Collosus. I though it was a brilliant game at the time and so different. But that is what is so wonderful about RPG's is everyone's tastes can be so different and there is no right experience. BTW thank you to you and SuperDerek for doing such insightful videos. It's gotten me to get more organized and focused driven to completing or at least widdling down my collection. You guys are great and would love to see another collab soon. Also just noticed, you and I are maybe one of only a few that think Tales of Graces F is a wonderful game. I absolutely loved the story and think it's one of the more overlooked Tales of games when others make lists. Great VIDEO as always.

lol. I replay Gemfire all the time. if you want to burn through it super quickly and get it off your list, do the following: Pick the last section option for a story, Gemfire. Choose Lyle. Defect Pender (Might take a couple tries but he flips super easily). These options are the red buttons. Save. Are prices high or low? If low, reload. prices are high, sell ALL of your food. Have all the front line provinces buy massive amounts of soldiers. The AI never checks how much food you have, just troop numbers. Then start buying low and selling high, jacking troop numbers and filling up resources as needed. AI will never even attack you. Jack up cultivation, loyalty and protection in between trading. No big if you ave to skip a month during buy or sell season. Reject all alliances. When you have 999 of troops across most your front line areas, could take 1 or 2 years, start attacking the enemy rapidly (when you have enough food/gold). You can use a blue option to transport food from your back line areas, or a brown option to send troops to reposition both food and soldiers they have. Turn off animations each time you enter a battle, yeah it sucks it doesn't stay off on its own. Don't be afraid to send in your entire force when attacking. Don't bother with 5th units at all, crush smaller countries like Terian's and steal their summon gems instead, which have a repeat use every few months. If it gets to be too much of a headache as you're taking over the world, AI entrust areas. These options are the green buttons, You can beat the game in under a couple hours this way. The genesis version is a lot more difficult though and doesn't look as nice anyway. If it sounds complicated, it's really not. I love this game, but the AI is dumb as hell.

Your document is a lot like the site Backloggery. I've been using that for years to keep track of game progress and all the games I impulse purchased on sales. I don't think I'll ever catch up to the end of my collection but every year I get a bit closer and discover a lot of delightful games along the way, so I'd say the effort is well spent. RPGs are obviously a challenging prospect for game clearing, since by the time you've finished one of them you could have beat two, three, maybe five games of other genres. One way I've gotten a lot of them done is playing alongside yours or HCBailly's Let's Plays. I've got no issues using a walkthrough guide to keep on the right track, and I really appreciate the explanation of game mechanics. I decided to do a quick count of how many rpgs I've beaten and it comes out to 103! Though I have strict standards for what counts as an RPG. It's not enough to have experience points. Zelda-likes and Metroidvanias don't count under any circumstance. Fire Emblem counts but not Advance Wars. Parasite Eve 1 counts, but not 2. Some kingdom hearts games I could make a case for, but I decided on a blanket No for all of them to keep it simple. Going backward through my play history it looks like #100 was Shining Force, and I never noticed.

I am a big anime buff and in the last year since getting back into it I have been keeping an extensive list just like this. I have two separate lists, one of anime shows, series, movies I have watched along with the month and year. Then another list of ones that I would like to see and when I finish an anime I switch it from the "to watch" list, to the "watched" list. It helps me keep on top of my hobby and I change up genres so I don't get bored of seeing the same type of thing over and over. I watch one at a time from beginning to completion, then move on to the next one. This method can easily be transferred to your gaming backlog. I just wish I did this years ago because I've seen several hundreds of anime and there's no way I can remember all of them. Some I only remember the name, but not what happened in it and others the opposite is true. David has a good idea that I'm going to incorporate and that is a sentence or two synopsis to remind me what it was about or my feelings toward it so I can reference it years from now and so I can remain engaged with past experiences. I'm more casual about my RPG playing, and just play whatever for fun when I have time. Thanks to David for making this video and thanks to you for reading this.

I've loved RPG games since probably around middle school when I watched a friend playing FF legend on his Gameboy during an extracurricular class where we played video games (yes, my school actually did this). RPGs quickly became my favorite genre and I aspired to complete as many as I could before I shead my mortal coil. back around the year 2000 I started keeping track on notepad on my PC as well. I listed every game I beat and on which systems. I also created a separate notepad that kept track of how many RPG games I beat each year. Some years I do pretty well and some not so good depending on how my life is doing. So far I've completed 182 RPG games, not a huge number but like you I also have a life outside gaming. A while back I created a blog where I briefly wrote about each game after I beat as well and it helped motivate me to play more as well. great video!

Yes I love this! I'm in a similar position at 34 years old with a family, very demanding job, and always putting powerlifting & cooking above gaming. We have similar gaming backgrounds, basically covered the entirety of NES, SNES, and PS1 libraries, etc. There is 1 other big factor I personally build my gaming plans around though that I never hear people talk about. Probably 2/3 of my gaming time is in that hour before bed roughly, which means overly stimulating games really don't jive well. So I like to always be playing 2 games, 1 relaxing (strategy RPGs are the king here, or turn-based RPGs really) and then the other is usually a current-gen modern game like a resident evil or dark souls, etc. I track most games via trophies/achievements, or by manually uploading save states to a PC folder with a .txt file noting the highlights of each playthrough. I like seeing how responsible adults manage gaming, it's usually just assumed people who play RPGs and games have abundant free time, but some of us fight to make time since it's such a big factor in mental health and happiness.

Right now slow and steady gaming works for me since im not young anymore playing around 2 to 3 hrs a day and focusing on finishing 1 to 2 games on different systems mainly my ps4 and switch seems to work out for me. It keeps me hook on the game and makes it so that i dont get bored that easily with it

I think this is great even beyond just gaming. I could use this for any list of activities or studies I have planned to help make better use of my time. Certainly makes me realize just how valuable watching let's plays could be in the background while working on other projects, I often watch speedruns in the background. I think I may do a list like this myself as I have plenty of my own games I have yet to finish. I mean I have still haven't completed the first Dot Hack game, or dragon quest 8 on my ps2. Not to mention my ps1 games I haven't finished. I also like how a list like this can help collect your ideas and brief notes so that when you look back you can remember how you felt about what games.

Great organized document. I made same thing when I got PS3 in 2006 keep track of all digital and disc games. Then it was convoluted and moved into Excel which made it easier. You can make sheets per console and use columns for title, yr release, console, price, dlc, complete date or in progress, or even color code each cell. Now I updated it every few weeks when buying or PS+ game. Lunar next on list after I finish Tactics orgre.

Sometimes I will have someone else help with getting through my backlog. I too do not have a ton of time to play as real life is a lot. I have amassed a good size backlog over the years so I'll give my friend the choice between a couple of letters. They pick then I'll let choose either between 1-5 (where only I know which game is which number) or once they picked "H" and I had them pick between "Ha" or "Ho". That was between Hades and Horizon 1. That is how I finally beat Horizon years after buying it.

Thanks for the fascinating & relatable video. You know you're a busy adult when you have an organized & prioritized to-do list for hobbies, since free time is so limited. I have to make lists to make the most out of any spare time I get after work & parenting & dealing with chronic illness. My husband can stick to playing 1 game until he finishes or abandons it forever, which seems like a simpler way to knock stuff off a list (or not even need a list), but I get too bored with that and always have a few games in progress. I am slow to progress in games because I'm rarely in the mood to play the same game for more than a few days in a row. I try not to take long breaks from rpgs because after a long break I just want to start over. I don't know why 'cause it's crazy to erase a good amount of progress. But I just don't like continuing from where I left off if it's been a while since I touched an rpg.

I appreciate that you prioritize working out. I know for a fact that if I allowed myself, I would lock myself up in my home and play games all day and never stop. Not healthy at all! I have a system in place where I have to workout first, either weights at the gym or a hike before I game. I have to earn my game time. Otherwise I can easily lose myself.

Hey, thanks for sharing the method! I definitely have simple lists here and there but it really becomes unmanageable after a bit, and I'm really going to steal your idea of separating by categories to not have multiple similar games parallel to each other. Definitely have insipred me to add a bit more planning to my madness xD

Hey David, I really appreciate this video, it's nice to see how other people handle playing so many games. Does the management aspect ever make it feel like a job? Also, what is your opinion on roguelikes? I know there are a few turn based ones like slay the spire, star renegades, and crown trick. Do you have any interest in the genre? How would you think about tackling a game like this (when do you consider the game to be done if it's designed to be beaten over and over).
@davidvinc
@davidvinc 2 года назад
I'm not the biggest fan of rogue likes, however I will say this, a game is done when you think it is done. For example, undertale was designed to be played multiple times with different playthroughs but I played it once - the way that I wanted to play it - and I personally consider it done. It's your gaming life, and you dont have to prove anything to anyone.

@@davidvinc Oh man that's a perfect example! I felt the same way about Undertale, 1 playthrough is good enough for me. That makes a lot of sense, 'beating the game' is the most obvious goal, but some people like 100%ing games or challenge runs and so that allows for self directed goals. Thanks for your reply!

Thanks for sharing. I usually just play a single game at a time, 100%ing and getting the platinum if possible. After I get bored of gaming, I watch an anime series until I get bored of that and then I switch back to another game. The cycle repeats! haha Since January 2021 I have played through Dragon Quest XI (for the first time), Trials of Mana (for the first time), Final Fantasy X HD Remaster (for I don't know, the 25th time, but it was the first time I got the platinum! haha), Super Mario World, which I actually did a Let's Play of on my YT channel, and I'm currently playing through Tales of Arise right now.
