This was so interesting to watch. I never would have thought of asking other animal trainers for advice as I kind of assumed all animals would be different. Although I would have thought that one of the hardest animals to train would be a cat as they make their own rules lol!

I love your channel and what you do. I pray to see my sweet boys free fly one day. I’m terrified because I lost a sun Conure when he got out. But I agree there’s nothing more beautiful than a flighted bird. I live off a busy highway and I’ve started working on desensitizing. Both of my boys are clipped right now. I purchased my sun Conure as a baby in May. The breeder clipped him. My umbrella cockatoo is adopted. He’s 13 years old and also clipped. I pray to see them both spread their beautiful wings and fly one day. Thanks for all you do

So glad you made this video. really interesting. i have been a long term follower (a good 8 years plus) and started watching your video's whilst I spent 10 years deciding if I should / could take on a parrot (always had cockatiels / budgies and kakarikis before). Once I watched enough of your videos I decided I wanted one but looking into the proper adoption process here in the UK it's a very convaluted process that presented more issues than it would solve, then a friend of a friend contacted me with and African Grey (baby) who he could no longer keep (due toa disability). Long story short. baby is now very happy with me. so thank you for your video's. If your channel didnt exist I probably wouldnt have rehomed a parrot. now my wife wants a galah. lol

I am currently working on training my horse and it's so interesting seeing the perspective of other animal communities coming from a community where R- and P+ is the norm and R+ is seen as very atypical. It continues to motivate me being able to see people who go, "wait, how do you even ask for that without a reinforcer?" that using R+ with ANY animal is a wonderful option. So glad you mention that you explored other communities. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us!

Man, this is so inspiring to me. I've been continually watching so many of your videos, and I'm really getting into this. I really want to take your advice and get into some training...thanks so much for the videos and doing what you do..I've had a really hard life up to a year and a half ago. I overcame a decade-long drug addiction and have ptsd...but animals really help. I've trained dogs and am a groomer, but I've always wanted to connect with birds (and also monkeys & apes, but thats someone else's expertise) so thanks for being an inspiration.

Jamie, I love your training philosophy and the relationship you build with your birds. I've been a big fan of yours. You have natural instincts and the sensitivity that parrots thrive on:) As someone who understands the tragedy of the pet bird trade and the millions of homeless parrots who languish in sanctuaries, I was saddened when you spoke about not adopting and not rescuing. I understand that you had a painful experience with an adoption not fitting into your lifestyle, however, one bad experience does not mean rescues are a bad decision. I hope your viewers will always opt for adoption and rescue. Some of the most amazing parrots are rescues. Please champion for homeless parrots. They need you.

The Parrots Voice it wasn’t just one, it has been many - luckily we didn’t lose any but we came close twice and that was enough for me. I’ll make sure the adoption message is heard loud and clear from this point, didn’t realize how it may have came off. It’s just not suited for my current lifestyle that has been such for 14 + years. Thanks for your comment 👍🏼💗

I have just acquired two Green Cheek Conures from a local bird shop. Their wings were clipped and was planning to keep them clipped. However, after watching a number of RU-vid videos, you have changed my mind. Once their flight feathers grow back, Pine and Turk become flighted birds. I have learned much from your RU-vid videos. Thank you

Thank you so much, I just loved hearing your story and how all this came about. Experiences in life shape each person so much, this is really helpful to know that you guys had difficulties as well as so much success. I know I am only a cockatiel owner with a clipped 6 year old girl. But because of you specifically we have started touch training. It has been a few months, but she is getting it. It is my fault we are not doing more with it. We completely changed her diet and Nemo's whole personality is changing too. Right now I am working on getting her to eat your Summer chop from your book, One day, I would love to free fly, but Nemo probably won't be the bird. I love how Comet is actively listening to you the whole video. Thank you, Maren

Thank you for your videos. My sister had two green wing macaws that were badly socialized and aggressive. She and her husband left them with me for a year and I had a bad experience so in a way it's good for me to see them being happy and loved. My sister's female got mad at me for having to take an egg out of their cage (she had asked me to) and went after my face. I had major plastic surgery and still have a scar that runs from my forehead to my top lip. It's weird, I miss them still, though so it's nice to see your birds. =)

I second this. Force training works on animals who won’t defend themselves against their owners like domestic dogs. Try putting an aversive tool on an animal that can and will kill you if need be and see how smoothly that goes.

I wish that I could free~flight my flock, but we live pretty high up here in the mountains and have very large and very aggressive birds of prey.... we got our first snow fall of three inches yesterday after it being in the 60's the day before. It was like watching a huge pillow fight... with that being said, we are installing a new wood burning stove in our home today, and I was wondering if you could give some advice to bird owners regarding fireplace safety, and winterizing for your flock in general in a future video perhaps? We're so happy that you became a confident and "slow and steady" type of bird trainer, because we have learned so much from your style of training and thus, have really special bonds with our flock because of you. ~*◇*~

I'm so curious now how your husband & brother decided to start their website and the show. Did they have an interest in both, did he want to do shows and that's why he got birds or loved & saw how good he was with birds then the shows. Did you meet him then get in the show, did you develop that idea together since you were so young? So many questions after watching the video, lol. I just think what you guys do is awesome and I'm sure the shared love of what you do, doing it together will show that just because you marry young, doesn't necessarily mean it isn't going to work or a mistake. What you all do is amazing. Lastly, I notice in so many still shots of you free flying birds, after the take off you have a posture like a human that would want to fly. Maybe just the way you let them go or on purpose but remembering you saying how they are the only animals that can do it and how amazing it is, why wouldn't you want them to fly, those photos just look like you don't just say it. You clearly feel that with your total being and it's awesome!!

Mine were only clipped as babies and then they grew out and i never clipped them again bc they know the layout of our home. Two of mine my tiel and conure also got out and thank god i always took them out side and in carriers and harness bc i got them both back. My conure within 15 mjns bc well he was a conure and they are into everyrhing. My tiel flew to my roof and once i called him and flapped my arms while making wind noises then he flew down and around a circle and into my husbands arms. Thats how i get him to come. He couldnt fly at first bc the breeder cut his wings to short and it took months for him i be able to fly. Hes a yr old in nov and he just started flying two months ago. Hes doing amazing.

Wow, Im surprised you struggled moving to macaws. I was so used to my nippy (we did fix that LONG before he passed) love bird, it was a freaking joy to hold a parrot that doesnt bite to say "i just wanted you to know I love you" lol. It is frightening when you see that beak though...I almost screwed up with an amazon at the pet shop that was a rescue (which I didnt know at first lol, just that he hated hands) they hadn't had time to work with. I was using "Step up?" as a way to evaluate our trust level and oops... good thing I pulled my arm away when I saw he was ready to HANG with nobody in the shop that could get him off me! I was just shocked at how much lovebird body language translated over into a larger, smarter parrot, but if the beak freaks you out, the parrots freaked out that your freaked out...crap cycle lol.

I wanted to ask, I’m planning on freeflight training my 14 week old blue and gold macaw, which I’ve never done before. I’ve looked at many courses and videos and articles, some say to use a harness, some say to not use a harness, etc. since mine is still young, should I bother with using a harness or start the recall etc training without one (when I start on the outdoor recall after getting the indoor recall perfect)?

The picture you had on 3:40 is that when you guys were at the crew ship or at sandcastle saipan? I think you guys performed there once a long time ago or maybe I was mistaken. Anyway love your videos

How would I flight train? Would I start trying to encourage the bird to fly from and to perches and other places and then try bringing them outside? I’ve never hand trained a bird before and I am kind of planning to get a green cheek conure, and flight training is something I would like to do with him.

I would like to talk about about an idea that could become a very big project. This involves training birds.
