Do you need a graphic design degree in order to be a successful freelance designer? After a lot of research into this subject of getting a graphic design degree or any kind of art degree, and after attending art school on my path to an illustration and graphic design degree and then stopping mid the process to go work in an apprenticeship under a very talented designer at an in-house publishing company, I was able to find out that it is not just about the graphic design degree to get hired. After talking to some big designers at Pixar and being in this industry for over 12 years, I have come to the conclusion that getting a graphic design degree is not at all necessary to be successful. I've been a graphic designer for over 20 years. Started out as a church secretary laying out bulletins and newsletters using a word processor. Begged them to get me a computer (this was in the 90's and internet was new and scary haha!). I taught myself by using Microsoft Publisher. Later got a job as an ad creator at a fairly large newspaper - I was the only one who did not have a design degree. I had a notebook and any time I asked someone a question, I wrote down my answer. I looked online for tutorials and bought books to learn as much as I could. Within 6 months of working at the newspaper, I applied for a job in the marketing department and was up against the best designer in advertising for the job. I got the job! Now I was designing all the marketing materials for the newspaper (billboards, signage, glossy programs, etc). When I left the newspaper, I had a great portfolio and got a job at our chamber of commerce as the Creative Services Manager. I have had a great career in corporate environments but finally decided to step out on my own (whole different world). I am 56 years old and feel like you're never too old to stop learning...which is why I'm here! Thanks for your inspiring videos!

Thank you for sharing your story very inspiring. I am as well learning as much as I can graphic design . I went to a fast course graphic Desing for a year , that somewhat help me to understanding the software better ( I still learning ) . Later ,I didn’t see the point in going for a 4 years degree of something that could be done literally in 2 years maximum.

Great video! I absolutely agree a degree isn’t necessary, but being educated definitely is, but there are so many ways to get that knowledge, and not just by going to school. Even once you start your career you have to continue learning and growing your knowledge. Especially as a graphic designer knowing the design part is only half the battle you also have to put the effort into learning about whatever industry you’re designing in.
@4TheCreatives
@4TheCreatives 2 года назад
This is very well said! I am a huge advocate for in depth research into the industry you are working in, whether that be freelance or in-house. You will do so much better when you can talk the terms of the business owners in that niche. And that is time much better spent than on subjects that have no relevance to anything you want to learn.

Thank you. I’ve been trying to seriously think about what I want to do with my life and so far graphic design is what has appealed to me the most. I don’t know if I’ll stick with it but there’s a good chance I will. There’s no harm in trying so I’ll start this journey even if in 2 months I decide to do something else. This video really inspired me. Thank you. I just realized that I wrote thank you twice(thrice now), oh well.

I am a parent of kids myself. We all see tuition costs at universities skyrocket, saddling kids with huge debt that takes years to dig out from, and the insane curriculums, including indoctrination into perverse ideas designed to tear apart the country. My best advice is to start discussing with your child early on what their goals and passions are. Help them nurture and develop the skills needed to grow into the best they can be in the related field. Encourage and help them take classes offered in the community that will get the exposure to information and skills they'll need to succeed. Falling into the trap of following the crowd and going for a degree puts too many obstacles and diversions in the way of pursuing your goals and following your passion. This is most especially related to the arts, but can also be applied to many other fields. Thanks Lauren for helping others see the light.

I am an artist since as long as I can remember. As a kid, I loved to draw. When I became an adult, there was all the expectations of getting a job and having a family. Unfortunately, my art became my hobby. Although I found success in landing in some amazing juried art shows across Canada and selling my work, it never became a full time job for me since I was working at other jobs to provide that regular pay cheque to support my family and make ends meet. Then two years ago, COVID arrived, and I found myself out of work temporarily. Since many colleges and other training institutes went to online learning, I found a program for graphic design that could be done entirely online. It wasn't a 4 year degree program ( I already have one of those in an unrelated field) but it provided enough to give knowledge and training in the basics of graphic design as well as introduction into the software that most graphic designers use. I completed the program with honours and have since been working to re-jig my style while working my way into the industry full time. I really appreciate other creatives as yourself that continue to encourage those to never give up. I am definitely my worst enemy and at times struggle with imposter syndrome and lack of confidence. I hear it is common among creatives. But it gives me courage to continue when I see other creatives with your same passion and drive. Thank you so much for posting this.

Thanks so much for sharing your incredible creative story! And I’m so glad you have decided to go for design as a full time career. Yes imposter syndrome gets even the best of designers and creatives. Just keep taking action moving forward and don’t listen to the voices in your head. They are nonsense and the more you listen, the more real they become. Keep your own goals firmly in mind and you will get where you want to go ❤️😊

I do just have to say for a long time I was lost because I was at school but didn't like all the extras. All I want to do is learn what I need to learn I am the type of person that learns better hands on and school was not it. I was lost because I thought that I had to have a degree to be successful and I was wrong. I found graphic design and couldn't believe why I never thought of it I was thinking just doing marketing or advertising management. I am so glad I found something in the business world that also includes art which is one other thing that I love. You are the reason that I ended up deciding this is what I want to do. Now just got to make it happen, so thank you for your videos!

I have a 25 year photography and prepress background. I always wanted to be a graphic designer but never thought I was good enough. Started taking online classes this past year for a 2 yr graphic design degree. I’m finding I already know a lot about the programs and design basics already. Classes are easy. I’ve been wondering if I should just go for it before finishing the degree. This video is definitely pushing me towards it.

Having that background in prepress and photography is I'm sure helping you immensely as these skills are hard to come by in the design world and will allow you to work really well with clients who have physical packaging and such that they need designed. I would say focus on the skills, that is great the classes are easy for you! Have you figured out the type of design you like to do specifically? Web, print, layout?

I took throughout school. But my father discouraged me from Art school unless I wanted to be a commercial designer, a person that created ads, logos, fliers. I ended up with a degree in broadcasting (4 year school). I studied video production, learned the skills of writing, editing, producing, informative visuals. This experience has helped me in photography as a hobby.

Depends. My brother went to the #1 rated art college in the states. He took two years off after HS saving money to fund the first year of college, worked after classes and the summers, with loans and a partial scholarship, no trust fund. He received an education focused on graphic design starting the 2nd year. His professor had a well established Corporate/Branding agency in Massachusetts, that also had Apple as a client. That’s the advantage of the better schools, they have well-paid and experienced faculty, and offer visiting critics from your profession. After graduation he discovered his resume (college recognition) was an advantage. There were established alumni and non alumni willing to look at his portfolio and he started working after 3 months, where his professional education began. He’s now at a consultancy with global reach based in NYC, flying all over the planet again after Covid. Most of his connections have a degree, at the corporate level a degree is necessary.

Thanks so much for sharing your brother’s story. And his path sounds very exciting and productive with great results. Some businesses do require degrees but not all. The point I wanted to make is it’s not 💯 necessary for every person to be successful.

Hello! I do have a degree in Graphic Design. However, I 100% agree with you. Having said that, you mentioned something that I think is very important to highlight. You mentioned: Self-taught designers. So it's true. It doesn't matter if you went to design school or not, but either way, you have to learn. You have to be curious, go to the library, read and try new things. So I would say a Design school will just give you the resources to guide you in the right direction, but ultimately it's up to the student to take those resources and move forward. Also, many people believe that Design schools will teach you how to use computer software. This is not the case. Yes, there are workshops here and there on how to use a tool, but that's not the point. You won't get that in a Graphic Design university program. A Design school will push you to try new things, give you an open book of resources and push your own creativity but that's it. So in the end, whether or not you have a degree, it all depends on who is open to learning. Now, I think that's true not just for Design, but any profession. If something interest you, go get it. Now, many think that Design it's about how to use computer software. It is not. Design is thinking, it's learning, it's understanding, it's connecting, it's trying.
@4TheCreatives
@4TheCreatives Год назад
Thank you so so much for sharing your story Guillermo!! This is very inspiring for those curious from someone who did get a degree. I’m sorry universities don’t teach the software all the time. And I totally agree on the path. It always comes down to the individual in anything in life. Thanks again 😊
@guillermoc.1467
@guillermoc.1467 Год назад
@@4TheCreatives Hello, it is important to highlight that computer software are just tools. Powerful tools, but just tools. These tools won't do the Design. I remember when I started. At just the very first week, there was this challenging project. Well, at least for me! So, I went to see the teacher and said. "I don't know how to use computer software." He said: "It doesn't matter. Get a pencil." So there you go! This project was about understanding abstract forms, the atmosphere it creates, and the emotions you can get from it. And that was just the introduction. So again, regardless a degree or the tools out-there, I would say that someone who truly wants to be become a good designer needs to read, be curious and try new things. Here a tip. Just draw whatever! Also, for those who would like a good start point. There’s a very nice documentary called : Helvetica by Gary Hustwit. I recommend it. Also, there’s tons of books. Here is one that I would recommend : The Art of Looking Sideways by Alan Fletcher. Well! There you go. Cheers from Canada.
@4TheCreatives
@4TheCreatives Год назад
@@guillermoc.1467 I totally agree!! In my introductory course I have the students just sketch concepts to really understand the fundamentals. I don't let them near the programs until they understand the fundamentals. Too often someone will get Photoshop and then assume they can design, when that is completely backwards. Great recommendations. Thankss o much Guillermo from Canada :)

I definitely understand this. The biggest thing is setting targets and rewarding yourself for meeting them. There were some times when that happened, but that is why having a structured course for design is helpful because it requires you to meet targets and learn in a more disciplined way. But that does not mean getting a degree.

Hi Everyone , My daughter (19) has just started her journey to become a Graphic Designer, my question is ; should we get her Adobe suite now or is it better for her to start on the Free software options / more affordable versions?
@4TheCreatives

So great about your daughter! I’d say to have her learn the Adobe programs from the start. If she wants to become a professional graphic designer it’s best to learn them and get used to them as they are the industry standard.

Unless you want to work somewhere that requires a degree, an online course will do just as well. The main goal is to have the skills not the diploma.

don't know if you'll see this or respond. I'm trying to figure out what to do with my life and I'm in my 30s. Super stressed. I love photoshop, love making animation gifs but I'm not a professional. I've came across sources that teach basics of AI, Photoshop, In Design and Color Theory basics but I'm so worried if I do this all on my own, I won't know how to even get started in this career field. I LOVE graphic design, I just don't know if I have the time, money or energy to pursue a degree and I've seen vids like yours that say you don't need a degree but part of me wonders if it's to keep the market from being saturated for those with degrees? I could really use the feedback and help, TY.
@4TheCreatives
@4TheCreatives Год назад
I am also in my 30s and I definitely understand the stress. I created this video from a sincere communication that I really think it unnecessary to get a degree. I have been a professional designer for 13 years and have made a living from it without a degree. That does not replace the need to get properly trained and I feel that while you could go at it on your own, it is best to have a step-by-step program to help you. If you want to work in-house some jobs will require a degree, but not all. If you want to go freelance, it is purely up to your design skills. One thing you could do is to join a lower-ticket course on the fundamentals of graphic design and give it your all. Put in all the work in the practice projects, go through it with the mindset of application as opposed to just getting it done quickly and you will see how much better you can be with just focusing on the skill side. Now I do have a course I just released to answer all of the requests I get on RU-vid and Instagram to help teach design on How to Graphic Design at a very low cost which is all about the fundamentals and takes you through composition and layout, typography, color theory, Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop with tons of practice projects and to help you understand the whole design process from start to finish. If you are interested in that, you can look into it here: www.4thecreatives.com/design Otherwise, please let me know if you have any other questions around the degree situation.

@@dennisopoku3271 What type of design do you like to do? Logo, Brand Identity? Packaging? Web? Print? Digital? UI/UX? Animation? I would suggest first taking a basic design course that goes over the basics of typography, layout, composition, color theory and then deciding which type of design you like best. For freelancing, clients don't care about a degree. They care if you can get them a good design product that forwards their own business goals. Degrees are more important for job placement as often HR requires degrees.
