I love how you broke down the whole process of you getting your (UX/UI) Product Design role - You basically UX'd your UX job. You were also at a huge advantage of having a coding background - that makes you more competitive since you understand what engineers need. I hope you embrace and recognize your skillset is amazing. What a turnaround time, Congratulations!!!

Thank you so much for the uncut insightful content! This definitely helps a lot since I am applying for interships and jobs without a degree and even tho I have a dedicated portfolio of myself in UX design, I feel like it is literally impossible to get myself an interview or get my portfolio a review without any educational background. But, whatever I will keep on moving foward! Thank you and great talk!

Thank goodness! Just when I was feeling like giving up, you appeared! Thank you, Helen, for sharing all your generous experiences! Your authenticity and inspiration truly resonate with me. I completely align with your mindset in this video. Currently, I am actively seeking an internship in UI/UX, despite having no prior experience in this field. I only have a portfolio in landscape art design, and I've been trying to apply for internships, but it is really challenging to make my resume and portfolio stand out to HR. In your video, I realized the importance of following the job requirements and crafting a tailored CV. PS: As a foreigner, I really hope my English proficiency can be as strong as yours.

You're younger than me (I'm coming to my design realisations a bit late, heh) -- but your feelings and interests are very similar to mine! The whole being good at math, but also needing to be creative -- it's so strange that as a society people often assume that those two things aren't compatible.

Thank you so much for this! I graduated the same year as you lol. Hearing your path is insightful to us out here wondering if we need a bootcamp or generally wondering how to approach UX. I am a graphic designer but by no means a UX expert, but I think I certainly could build off of my skills in a similar way and continue learning via LinkedIn classes…it may not be much but it’s better than no experience and may help inform me of the next steps. I really appreciated you talked about the application process and observing the pathways of established UX designers in the field.

I started Graphic Design in High School and did more self-learning afterwards. After a course, it showed different pathways and that's how I learned about UX/UI design. I know Graphic Design helps greatly with switching into this field, and by now I've taken and finished several UX Courses. I don't have experience in the job field other than a few years ago, I completed a couple client projects in my senior year and a short internship. I don't know what should really be the best way to stand out to internships or what my next move should be. Any advice would be great. Love your video by the way. :)
@helen_melen
@helen_melen Год назад
Thank you! I suggest always having a portfolio ready for your internships and be thorough in explaining your process within your portfolio. If you want to take it a step further, try finding recruiters or design manager on linkedin and sending them a message that you’re interested in an internship or maybe just connecting. If there are positions open up they can possibly contact you. I think it can help having a linkedin and staying connected and networking as well Hope that helps :)

Loved this video!! I was wondering if you have any advice in getting to an agency job as a self taught designer? As a self taught graphic designer, what exactly do you put on your resume to get hired.... Other than listing "proficient in Adobe suite, etc." I have a degree in something completely different than design (in education), so how do I get employers to look at me without formal education in design? I am worried that even before getting to the portfolio, they would just skip you because the resume wouldn't have formal design education on it. Would really appreciate some insight into this, thank you!!❤
@helen_melen
@helen_melen 4 месяца назад
I wasn't a self taught graphic designer, I actually went to school for it but I think what helped me get my first graphic design job was the graphic design internship I've done which demonstrated some minor experience. I would maybe suggest to look for junior graphic design role or try getting an internship. Most jobs require some experience before applying unless it's a junior role.
