It's nice and refreshing to see someone doing well for themselves who prioritises sleep instead for encouraging people to sacrifice sleep for the "hustle".

I'm 60 years old now and worked most of my life for employers who just took from me, but I let them do it, so shame on me. About 10 years ago, I reorganized my life, became a minimalist and starting working for myself. My advice to young people is to do this EARLY in your life. Shun all that is mainstream society. You have the INTERNET !!! My generation did not. We did not have the opportunities that exist today.

Also, during your youth there were little things like not being able to have our own bank accounts, credit cards, loans and so forth without the co-sign or 'authorisation' of a male family member or husband. There's literal little things we all (as women) take for granted every day that just weren't a thing even in the 80s and early 90s.

I work a 2nd job as a lifeguard. Both my kids also work as lifeguards. 1st shift is 5:15 am-9 am. My son and I are totally fine to do this. Not my daughter. I realized fairly quickly that it doesn't just affect her work performance, but it impacts that entire day and at least 2 days after. She is a complete wreck. Now, she works a 5-9 pm shift and is much more productive and happy.

Say hallelujah! I've been a night owl literally since childhood. I'm now 70. I've tried periodically to become a morning person, but never with lasting success. I always found myself drifting back to my midnight, 1AM, 2AM bedtimes. I now have a great job in my chosen craft which allows me to roll in to work around noon. It's perfect! I awaken without an alarm, walk the dog, and have a leisurely breakfast. Sleep is a priority. To facilitate it, no evening alcohol, no late night web surfing. I fall asleep easily with a book or the gentle light of my kindle. I'm fortunate to have the power and circumstances to choose what works for my daily life.

I am a natural night person as is my mother and I even hate the bright morning sunlight and the bird sounds can be annoying because they signal to me that I have to wake up and try to function somehow. When you are sleep deprived, you're miserable, and it will ruin your health in most cases. I have always put a good night sleep as one of my main priorities. fatigue is a major issue that makes people miserable and causes car accidents. Schools in the recent years even started opening later in the morning just so students could get more sleep. Yes, very good point. We've created a system that society has forced everyone to conform to. I have made the mistake to judge people as lazy for sleeping late since I'm a morning person. Your video has taught me a lot; I will view this issue much differently.

I worked remotely from my Dad's house during that period, starting at 11:00 AM East Coast Time and monitoring the systems, providing Tech support to staff until 9:00 PM EST. That schedule really worked for me. I am retired Military and I had a lifetime of getting up between 3:30 AM and 6:00 AM and I never really adapted to that. Like you, I could force myself up, but I was never really on my best game. I think you are onto something here Nicole! Great Video!

They work around people with kids and a spouse, but if they know you are single w/o kids you work late, holidays, cover their call ins, etc. etc. I was a night owl and turned it around and was surprised how much I loved it. I did end up falling back into old habits, but wish I could get back. What I did was stay up all night until the next evening. I was dead tired at 7/8pm and was up bright and early at 4/5 am. I felt like I got way more accomplished and had more natural energy.

I overcame my night-owl-syndrome once I realized that it is not that CANNOT come out of bed early, but that I do not WANT to come out of bed early. That it is me who makes that decision, not some part deep inside my brain. Since then I actually take pride in being in control. I decide at what time I come out of bed, sometimes at 06:00, sometimes at 10:00, but mostly around 07:30. Taking control was for me the essential part and it feels good.

Found this video affirming. I’m a 63 yr old classical musician, frequent symphony rehearsals until 10:00 pm, evening and/or matinee performances, always been a night owl. Get home around 10:45 pm, takes 1-2 hours to wind down. Sleep is fairly consistent from ~1:00-7:30 am, dogs get me up before I’m ready. I always take a nap, sometimes 2 short ones ~4 hours apart. Have had 3 careers, currently board small dogs in my home when I feel like it! 😉 I can block out weeks when I need to. Have had to be at early jobs or work overnight shifts in “day job.” Huge struggle. My body sleeps 9.5 hours when I have the luxury of no alarms. Sleep hygiene is a huge big deal, and requires awareness throughout the day, in addition to a bedtime routine. What time are the naps, how long, how much caffeine after 6, or 3, or 1 pm? Spicy food earlier in the day, no violent tv, how much activity at what time of day, & on & on. This book has made an immeasurable difference in my life: Matthew Walker’s “Why We Sleep.” He also has some interviews on RU-vid. Thank you for what you share - you have a lot of common sense, which actually isn’t common anymore, and your explanations are wonderful. When I know the why behind something, it’s easier to incorporate into my life. You provide the why on a broad range of topics.

Tips for better sleep: get a sleep study ordered by your doctor to see if you have sleep apnea. That will definitely mess you up. Amazon has special pillows if you think you snore. Just make sure you get the right one depending on if you are side, back or stomach sleeper. Keep a routine. Do NOT eat more than 2 hrs before bedtime, unless very light snack. Taking magnesium and drinking milk before bed creates relaxation. Magnesium glycinate is best, no more than 250 mg per night. If you do a lot of computer, you either have to stop hours before bedtime or order cheap blue light blockers. Also, computer settings allow you to block that light that keeps you wired. Don't drink too much coffee, and stop by 4 pm if you go to bed around 11 pm. If you want a quick fix to stay awake a few more hours, drink icy water, splash cold water on your face, open the freezer and stick your face in it. Heat lulls you to sleep. Right before bed, find something boring to read or do. Avoid negative and scary stuff hours before bedtime. If it is not solved, put it in a journal for the next day and let it go. I am like Princess and the Pea, and it sounds like you are, too. No wrinkled covers. Make sure your sleep clothing is soft and comfy. Maybe spray some lavender spray on your bed. If you are on meds, talk to your pharmacist to see if there is a reaction or side effect that messes up sleep. Protein takes way too long to digest at night, so that is when carbs are king if you have to have a light snack. Bananas have potassium, which I think help with any hurting muscles. Try one thing. If it helps, but not completely, keep adding to the routine. Good luck!

I think it is a human evolution thing in many cases that is actually meant to serve a useful purpose. Imagine in the old days if everyone in the tribe was sleepy at night. Who would be awake in the night to look out for predators? And a lot of nature's most dangerous predators are only active at night.

I agree sleep is totally underrated. I'm more of a night owl than a morning person. I go to bed around 11:30pm on weeknights and get up at 7 or 8am depending on my first client appt. I notice a big difference though when I'm able to get that extra hour of sleep. On the other hand, I have wacky parents who wake up at 3:30am NATURALLY. They used to wake up around 5 or 5:30am, but then they have evolved to turn into this monstrosity. It's weird, unnatural, and I don't understand it. 🙃

I find it so great that you talk so candidly about sleep and how it is just as important as other things. I am a morning person convert but I don’t think it will be forever. When I had children I had to learn to get up early and as before I used to stay up until 2am most nights. I reckon when the kids grow older my sleep pattern will revert back and as I also work for myself I will relish that natural wake up call. Right now though I get woken by my youngest son every morning at 6am. I have a lot of get up and go in the morning but I find I have two dips in energy later in the day.

We now car camp on road trips and make the back of suv into a bed, I only need a few things, air, to be able to stretch my legs out and hip cushion, if my hips hurt then ita a nightmare! Take care of yourselves and listen to your body and mind. Rest when needed and sometimes things are mind over matter.

When I went back to a more normal 9 to 5 type routine, I still tended to get up early. Now I've been retired for some time now and, guess what, I've discovered that I am absolutely not a morning person, I get up at about 08.30 to 09.00 and take some time (breakfast, shower etc) to get ready to face the world. When I need to make an appointment for whatever reason I now always say "nothing before 11.00 am please, preferably later." I sleep better than I have ever done - I am late to bed late to rise. I agree there should be more flexibility in setting your work hours.

I recommend you read "Why We Sleep" by Matthew Walker. It's all about the mental and physical benefits of sleep and criticizes how our current society, especially grade school and university systems, interferes with healthy sleep schedules. Most children need to sleep more in the early morning, but are expected to wake up early to go to school. By interfering with their sleep, school is actually setting them up to fail.

I taught for 32 years. I knew I was a night owl, because even though I had to awake at 5, I couldn't get myself to bed before midnight. I never felt right until my summers away from the classes allowed me to sleep my natural sleep schedule during which time I slept 10 hours a night. Now that I am retired, I am able to awaken between 9 and 10 am every morning and i feel AMAZING. I always thought i would go back into the classroom, but i will NEVER AGAIN subject myself to trying to fit into the early bird school culture. Instead, i use my retirement to participate in late night open mics, play a few solo acoustic gigs, take care of my 89 year old mom, who is also a night owl, and live my BEST life. If I were to do it over again, I would have become a 2nd shift nurse like my mom, instead of a teacher. But I honestly feel that the education system needs to include a 2nd shift for all those students like me and you, who hated waking up early for school. I bet a school that started at noon and ran until 5 or 6, would be a perfect solution. Btw, I also feel like the conventional American school day is far too long. We waste so much time in schools. But these issues are for another video. Thanks for your refreshing insights.

Former night owl here 👋 I used to work in media and would have to stay at work until late at night. Then at 30 something I took a public service job which meant I had to be at work at 7:30 AM. I almost cried in the first few months. Each morning I'd sit on the side of my bed and wonder if I really need this job. And then I got used to getting up early. I am now 40 and I get up at 7:30 even on the weekends. Every night I lose sleep feels like a hangover the next day. I would never go back to being a night owl. Days are so much longer now. I guess it's all about the force of habit. You do something long enough, it becomes who you are.

Yep......agree 100%. I retired early, at 35. So for the last 45 years I sleep when I want, and since I'm a night owl I go to bed between 2-3 AM and up around 9-11 AM. The rest of the day I pretty much do whatever I want. Life is good.

Yeah I fully agree, I used to start at 8am, and was always tired (it was a fairly unfulfilling job too), then became self employed at mainly start at 9am, but will allow myself to start later if I've had to work late or know I'm out the night before.

I’m a morning person. Since I retired I don’t schedule anything before 9 am, unless I can’t avoid it. I’m in bed by 10 or 19:30 and up around 6ish. I don’t push myself either, I take my time to get my day going.

I am 50 years old and i have always been an early riser. Growing up as a child my father always said the sun should not catch us in bed and so i believe this is where it comes from. To go to my 8-5 job, on weekend's and when im on vacation i love to get up early at 6 am. I go to bed between 9 and 10 usually. I really love this and wouldn't want it any other way. You are correct about what you share with your manager. They are always taking notes🤔

I grew up with that mentality, but after my mom's death, multiple births, and many health issues including diabetes, I no longer can bounce out of the bed super early. I actually am dizzy for an hour or so after I am able to walk. Some of it may be age, but some people are not early birdie happy sunshines, nor should try to be. You do you. I wish I could do that, but I am seriously rethinking my own sleep schedule to start around 2 pm at night. The only thing is I have neighbors who are equally as old as me who want to party in the AM. I wish I had the new soundproof windows, but too expensive.

That is very interesting and relatable. I try to only make appointments in the afternoon because I find myself much more able to function later in the day. I feel very fortunate be able to get all my needed rest and choose my own schedule.

I'm a natural night owl, I feel the best at midnight/3 am/etc. So, I stopped fighting it & chose a 3rd shift job - night audit at a hotel. I'm pretty solid here, it works for me. It's a go to job. Is it something I wanna do forever? Idk. But it pays the bills, and I don't feel overstressed. That gives me the whole day if I schedule myself correctly. I've always been this way. As a kid, I'd wake up at 4 am & plug in a movie on my own and my mom just accepted this bc it's who I was. As a teen, my therapy was taking the dog out at 4 am and going for a walk. Back then, it was the early 2000's in small town, nowhere & there wasn't really anything to worry about. I don't think my folks knew how much I actually did go out on my own, just to walk. Or I'd take my notebook and draw something out in nature. I was just different. Still am. I never fit in to a society norm, so why on earth in my 30's should I start now? Anyway, I like my role. You know what they say about night owls being the watchmen of their people. I really like that thought. Plus, I don't have to socialize w/ too many people. & quite frankly, I like that even better. Anyway, thanks for reading!

Firstly, yes you've accomplish so much at a young age and congrats on that! Your new home is bright and lovely. Secondly, please start thinking highly of yourself because you're intelligent, focused and really interesting. Clearly you give everything much thought. Thirdly, WOW. I've been retired for years but still set my alarm for 6:00 each day because I thought I should. HA! I'll be stopping that tomorrow morning and see what my circadian rhythm is. I love the early morning, seeing the sun come up and the world wake up. But feel sleep deprived so can't wait to find MY rhythm. Great topic today.

Night owl turned morning person here. Part of it was getting older and patterns shifted naturally but the biggest part was short naps in the afternoon between 1pm and 4pm. The nap does not need to be long and shouldn't be but even just loosing consciousness for 10 minutes helps a great deal. Everyone is different, your millage may vary.

And about your old boss, you know that 2 percent of the population are psychopaths and their mission in life is to make someone miserable and unhappy every day! Your old boss was one of them! Avoid them like a plague! Another great video Nicole! And you are very special to me!

I'm a night owl as well. I always have been. In my family of 8 people, the only early riser was my brother, who constantly annoyed the rest of us making noise. 2 am until 10 am is about right for me. I worked shift work for many years. The shifts started at 6 am and 6 pm. Fortunately, we were able to trade shifts and many others that hated night shifts were eager to trade with me. The big bonus was that on night shifts there were few management people around to annoy me 😊 I appreciate your videos of common sense. Thank you

Night owl with a day job that starts at 9am. I have tried in vain to become an early bird. The schedule I’m on is most definitely only to fit in but has always been foreign to my nature. Being stuck inside during the C time helped me to go to bed earlier because there was not much else to do. Unfortunately, this means I wake up after sleeping a couple of hours. I appreciate your perspective on this issue. It’s refreshing to hear you refuse to go along with the BS

I’m an early bird and my night owl friends don’t understand when I say I won’t talk on the phone or take visitors after 7pm. I like to be in bed by 9pm. Part of my sleep hygiene is to avoid upsetting conversations that might include politics, personal problems, and gossip or complaining several hours before bed. I too take a hot shower and appreciate crisp sheets and a dark room along with calming sounds.

Hiya from Quebec, Nicole. I love your no BS channel. Answering your question I’m more productive now in my 40s in the morning and I think it’s bit hormone related (I just wake up) and then the world is calm, no noise and I can wake up slowly and even produce intellectual stuff. My bet is that people who sleep very late can create the same vibe, except that you risk being tired from your day. In any case, I’ve discovered I’m pretty adaptable on schedules but as I get older I simply need to sleep more. And I’m respecting that. Like you I like routines to go to bed at proper time and waking up early means… sleeping early. For example, to wake up at 5:30 am I have no choice but to go to bed at 8,30pm. I cant do what those gurus can of sleeping at midnight and getting up early!!,

Finally someone who gets the importance of sleep/rest😊. If sleeping was a job I’d be in line to apply. As I’ve aged, have loved not having to set an alarm and allow myself to go to bed later and sleep later, waking naturally. FTR, I don’t believe it’s possible to change when your body naturally wants to sleep. It never worked for me to rise early. I did it for 40+ years, but it was anything by natural.

The only video I ever saw on the internet re to sleep. Staying healthy & getting rest is the most important thing in life. They say once U hit 40; U should be in bed @ the latest maybe about 12:30 & back up by about 10 or earlier. It's great for your heart to do this or so I read. Great video. This is 1 of the major reasons that I got out of the dance club scene @ 21 & got out of the bar scene @ 25. It's very unhealthy to stay up really late all the time.

Thank you for your video, I think it is a very important lesson for everyone. It took me a very long time, to realize how much it matters WHEN I sleep. In high school I had to wake up at 5:30, bachelor's 6:30, and for my first job, 7:30. No matter how early I went to bed, it either did not help, or I couldn't even fall asleep. I also had stomach ache, nausea and tremendous amount of anxiety in the morning. Then it all changed in 2020: Most of my master's education was online due to covid, so all lectures were recorded, and my schedule just opened up completely, it was all up to me. Without consciously planning it, I started to go to bed around 2 am and wake up at 9 every morning. Then I had a very chill morning, every day, I have allowed my body to wake up slowly, naturally, so I could start my day at 12.00, and stay active until the evening. Later, my part time job was also between 13pm and 20pm 3 days a week, so I was thriving, I felt so much more energy and therefore I just had more free time on my hand. I haven't used an alarm clock for years, and it completely terrifies me if I have to on some VERY IMPORTANT occasions. I try to avoid it as much as possible, as it comes with so much anxiety (somehow my heartrate jumps up to the sound and I cannot calm down for hours) and tiredness all day. Now I am searching for a job, and my number one priority is to chose a company that only has a "core work-time", when you must be available (e.g. 11am to 15pm, for meetings, communication etc.), but you can choose the rest of your working hours. Being able to work from home could be also a huge help in this. #teamantialarmclock

Thank you so much Nichole. I work on the road and by 3pm I desperately need a short nap otherwise I can not make it through the day and I literally fall asleep on the way home. Stupidly meetings back in the office are always scheduled around 3pm when we are the most tired and submissive to our tyrant boss. Any way I have bought a Hammock which I use in good weather or I have a 15min nap in the car. You really encourage me Nicole I am not alone in this journey. One day I will be free. God bless you

Going to bed whenever I feel like it & getting up whenever I feel like it !!! I am also a night owl !! I never make any appointments in the morning…my day starts late like you too….🪐 (I am an artist & poet ) But my whole life I lived unnaturally….by the clock…a slave…. I’m so happy for you …that you figured this out early & are not wasting your life doing what you hate…🙏 I’m a very late bloomer & boomer haha You are a wonderful inspiration ♥️ Sometimes my schedule gets off kilter…and I will go to bed early & get up early… for various reasons…. But I am just naturally a nite owl …

i get up at 3 am for work because i work in a kitchen and i hate everyone that much. i also really value having my afternoons free, so it's worth the sacrifice. honestly i just go to bed early (which can be really challenging in the summer) and if i got enough sleep, it really feels no different than waking up to an alarm at any other time. plus getting up so early makes you tired early, so you just sort of get in that groove. bonus tip- sunrises are almost always gorgeous! way more often than sunsets. and enjoying them while the world is quiet is really magical.

I was cursed with a mother who was a morning person, and a father who was a night owl. This means I can 'function' if forced to get up early (like I have been for decades, thanks work), but that I'd FAR RATHER got to bed at 0200 as you said. Waking up naturally at 10 seems like a dream I won't be able to achieve until I'm retired. Just 20 years to go... I'd give anything to be an entrepreneur. I don't need millions, just enough to be able to buy a house on cursed Vancouver Island. If I could get a business going where I could make that much, you better believe I'd be going to be at 0200 and waking up whenever the hell I want to! I have always loved what I call late evenings. My friend and I were 911 dispatchers together, and she always loved staying up until 0700. She'd go home, make breakfast, and read for 2 hours before even starting to yawn. Multiple times, I didn't remember driving home at that hour, because I was so tired. I always thrived on the 1400-0200 schedule. Absolutely perfect for one such as me!!

I have been working 2nd shift for over 12 years exactly for the reason of sleep. I work 3-11 pm and go to bed by 2am and get up at 10am on my own without an alarm. That's what works best for me and if I get up say at 7am I feel sick and I'm tired all day. I prioritize my sleep also because I'm getting older. On the weekends I also take a short nap in the afternoon..no apologies for that either. It's important to follow a rythm that's right for ourselves provided that it's possible.

I sleep from 10 pm to 6 am every weekday and as a 40-something professional woman I never like to "admit" that because people act like 8 hrs is a crazy amount. Even though it's literally the recommended amount of sleep! On weekends I usually sleep 10 hrs. My husband sleeps a bit less at night but takes an hour plus nap every day (he works from home). We are both VERY energetic and in excellent health for our age. I think sleep and nutrition are the 2 biggest reasons for this.

Hey love, awesome video! Im an example of someone who hated the early morning school days and slept through the first few classes however I now love early mornings and prefer them. Not sure if I can say exactly why, but I did go through a big transition with my health at one piont. I eat totally different than I once did, which improved my sleep, and I also just love love that early morning stillness these days. I now live by the saying, rise and fall with the sun. So it is possible if thats something you want! Thanks for the reminder as well - that we are all different and there is no right nor wrong. I know this, but not always great at implementing it.
