I appreciate the lessons taught, here is my question that no one has been able to answer in regards to cash stuffing and budgeting. How do I start? I get the concept of setting up a budget. However, if I have some money in savings already do I use it to pay as much debt as I have and then build up the one month ahead. Option 2, leave the savings alone as a one month ahead and then use every penny left to start paying back debt, before even starting sinking funds? I’m so confused on how to start? I’ve been cash stuffing since July, but not sure what I should do with the money I had already saved!

You can do it either way but it all depends on what makes sense for you right now. In the beginning, I was paying so much money in interest, it made more sense for me to pay off as much debt as possible and then start building up my one month ahead savings. I didn’t have the money to pay anything off outright so I used our tax refund to start with and used the debt snowball method to pay off the remaining debt. I wanted to pay off as much debt as I can, but I was still setting aside $100 a paycheck (in the beginning) towards my sinking funds so I had a little cushion in case something popped up that needed the money. I also have a “worst case scenario” mindset so I want to make sure I have an emergency fund set aside so if something happens, we’ll have some funds to keep us afloat. Once I had that down, every penny remaining after I budgeted my paycheck would go towards an extra debt payment because I want to payoff all of my debt asap so I don’t have to pay as much interest. Thank you so much for explaining everything so well. I'm desperately wanting to get my finances under control. One question, when you are doing the cash system, do you have your bills on auto pay or do you manually pay the bills each month? I worry about taking everything out as cash, then having the account overdrafted when something is auto paid. Thank you so much for sharing these tips.

I only use the cash system for my variable expenses. The total amount due from my bills will be in a checking account awaiting the bill due date. All of my bills are automatically withdrawn from my checking account on the date they are due. I also worry about possibly overdrafting my account so let’s say all of my bills this pay period comes to $500, I will keep $550 in my checking account so I have a buffer, just in case.
