I have been building a pipe organ in my house since 2014, and I would like to document the project for your viewing pleasure. Before I can post videos about what I am working on now, I need to give context. That’s what this video series is about; it is an overview of the project’s history. This video is part two of the series, which covers progress on the organ in 2020. Be sure to check out part one if you haven’t already.

I have had my 5 ranks of theatre pipes playing for more than 20 years. My instrument includes samples in a virtual organ. If I could do it again, it would all be real. Love what you are doing .

Wow it's a daunting task just doing a normal house move. Throwing a pipe organ into the mix takes it to a whole 'nother level. Thanks for showing us how you erected your organ. Oops that didn't sound right.

I found a 1970 11 stop Reuter with 90s updating in Wichita that I am moving to my home on the rio grande. Adding a 32' Estes bourdon I found in Dallas. Yeah I think not being digital extension is important. It's not the most pipes in nm but I do have the only 32' octave in nm. Also Adding a 61 note toy chest as I morph this into a theatre organ. It took me awhile just find a existing house that was adequate construction to put an organ in. I have 8' ceiling but the upstairs and 👇 rooms are 30x30. I took ugly cheap spiral stairs out and shoved the bigger pipes and stopped 16' flutes in the stairs cove. Organ people are weird . The swell takes up one of the living room. I have 5 octaves of Reuter trumpet in my living room. Will finish the install summer of 23.

You should be able to disassemble and reassemble the Moller Artiste blindfolded and with one hand behind your back! 🤣😎. I’m an organ builder in Canada, and you should be proud of your accomplishments with this instrument. It is no easy task! Make sure you put this on your resume. The skills you learned to do this, are just as valuable as college education. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you need any advice or help.

I very much enjoyed your video. I have a 3 rank Moller also and a 8 rank Moller from 1972 in my 1818 home here in North West Tn. Love what you are doing.

I have enjoyed following your wonderful project with the organ...Look forward to more videos of the progress....Best wishes to you! (have you considered adding VPO to your set up, since you have abi;ity of midi)

I have certainly played around with VPO software, and I connect a virtual instrument to headphones when I want to practice quietly. Some of the background music in the history videos was recorded on GrandOrgue.

Sounds pathetic. Out of tune, sounds like a box of whistles.

What is the point of this comment? I have seen you comment before, and while it is true you do not sugar coat matters, this comment is coated with gall and wormwood; a surefire way to make someone spit your advice out. If your point is for him to tune it better or for him to hire a tuner- say so. If you want to denigrate him or discourage him... well, that speaks for itself.

Well, Jim, that wasn’t helpful. An organ IS a box of whistles. Let’s talk about living with a pipe organ in a small room. I have 36 ranks in a two-car garage. I’m a retired professional musician. It takes a good ear to be able to hear the nuances needed to tune an organ. First, it’s not totally easy to set the temperament. You can use a strobe tuner, get as close as you can visually, and you still won’t have accurate equal temperament in all keys. It has to be done iteratively by ear until the “wolves” are gone. Second, when tuning the remaining octaves you have to be able to tune the beats out of the overtones, not just the fundamentals. Most musicians are not proficient at aurally isolating a single overtone. Third, some timbres are difficult to tune against the reference pitch. They just don’t work together to produce clear beats. The “woolier” the organ’s voicing, the more difficult this is. Fourth, consistent temperature is essential. A degree or two of change is enough to foul up a tuning. Fifth, the tiny pipes of high-pitched ranks and mixtures are extremely touchy. With a speaking length as short as a half inch, it’s very difficult to physically manipulate the pipe into tune. It’s been said that ”the room” is the most important stop on the organ. I can certify that a tiny, acoustically dry space makes tolerable tonal results very difficult to achieve. Finally, any recording made in such a room will always sound worse than the instrument sounds live. Perhaps you know these things already. If so, a helpful comment would be more useful.

... thus the "in progress temperament" comment he made in the first part, no?

Perhaps you would be willing to share the videos you’ve made of the instrument you’ve created as a labor for your home? That way we would all be able to learn from your expertise and be inspired by your accomplishments.
