🚨 disclaimer. It was mentioned in the comments that having an outlet in a high moisture environment like a cabinet can cause rust and component issues. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK and be sure to do your own research. I don't plan on having my cabinet in super high humidity. Articles that I've read mentioned anything between 40 to 70% humidity will be okay for electrical outlets. I'll be honest and can't believe I overlooked this issue... I got too excited about showing this product and how cool it is to overlook the humidity issue. 😂 If it ends up not working out then I can easily swap it out for the grommet style cord system. Thanks for watching and thanks for leaving feedback. That is one thing that I love about reading. All the comments is I learn from you as well!

We have two milsbo tall ikea cabinets and they set at high 80s in humidity and we haven't had electrical problems in over a year. We have the cords out of the bottom.But now I won't grow another way I love them! 😊

Hi Jeff! I used to run a small humidifier inside the cabinet, but after weather stripping the gaps and putting in a bunch of plants I find that just the normal cycle of the plants being watered and drying out is enough to keep the humidity at 50-65%.

I think I'll just keep it as is.....the humidity is maintaining at these levels

This is fantastic. I've been REALLY wanting a closing cabinet like this. Especially because Iv been an outdoor gardener for the most part and only recently getting into house plants. The few houseplants I've had in the past, I've been fine letting them go a bit dormant in growth through the winter. Now that have many more plants (not too many.....yet lol) I've been trying to figure out what to do for the winter. This would be perfect. Unfortunately I don't have the space for it (or the $) at the moment so I'm planning on setting up my laundry room with a bunch of grow lights, space heater, humidity, etc. The biggest problem though is that I can't see them through the day! This would be SO perfect. I can't wait to see updates on changes you make over time. I've seen some beautiful cabinets set up with lots of moss and plants that turn out looking like a tiny piece of rain forest.

Loved this! I love the magnetic shelves, I feel like it gives you more range to display your beautiful plants! I’ve heard mixed reviews on the weather strips, some people say it’s good to leave it for natural airflow as it helps with root rot but then others say it’s better so it helps with humidity Looks great! Really enjoyed seeing how you put it all together

🎉🎉🎉Great Job!!!! I love the solid metal back and magnetic shelves😍🤩😍🤩!!! My gf has the peg board back and during a huge pest outbreak, I found mealies and mites in the holes😠. I drilled a hole in the top back panel. Figured out the largest hole I needed to feed through cables and used a grommet so the wires didn’t rub on the sharp metal edges. Took it to my drill press and put wood under it for stability. Jeff, your drilling of your 2”? Hole seemed to go very well but have seen other struggle. I run my electrics down the back out of sight because of the solid back. I use those shelves too. They work well!
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants Год назад
That's a good method as well... To run the cords out the top. That's the nice thing about seeing everyone's project is how differently they set it up. I've already taken some heat in the comments about my outlets being inside the cabinet. Now I definitely understand the concerns for this, but I don't plan on mine being extremely humid so the point where there's condensation on the glass. I think I might have to make a short follow-up video explaining the importance of not using electrical outlets in high humidity lol

I like the way you do videos, simple & direct. I've used hole saws on wood but never on metal, so appreciate that, too. I've wanted the "fabrik" (I think that's how it's spelled, not sure) to make a greenhouse from, I really like the retro look of them. They're not a big as the rudsta but I just want it more as a display than a serious greenhouse, probably for ferns.

A great looking cabinet Jeff and a nice job setting it up. One issue I would foresee is that electrical components that aren't enclosed will rust and arc very quickly in the high humidity of a grow cabinet. Also you will have open ports that are not in use, have you thought about the danger of potentially dripping water into those, not just from your watering but also Transpiration?
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants Год назад
Hello. I won't be keeping the green house super high and it's looks like as long as it's 70% or lower then it should be okay. I will have to try and find a cover to place over top of it for the transpiration like you mentioned. Another thing I read online about outlets is that as long as there isn't condensation on the glass then there shouldn't be an issue. I'll be honest... I think I got too excited about the convenience of this type of plug to not realize that moisture might be an issue. If it doesn't work out like I expect then I can easily switch it to the grommet style.

The cabinet looks great and a really good video for hints and tips. I am curious to know why you bought it (what you hope the benefits to the plants will be or was it aesthetics to frame the plants), either way would be useful to know the aims and then as the updates come along, to see where it meets expectations or changes as time goes by.
@EverythingPlants

Very interesting question.... I have wanted a cabinet for a long time and now that I have one I am not 100% sure of its purpose yet. One angle I'm leaning to is using it for my anthuriums. As I continue to gain more of these plants, I would like them to be a little bit more protected from the rest of my collection.... Not that they are inferior to the anthurium, but maybe to see if I can keep a more consistent humidity specifically through our dry winters. As of right now that is the direction that I am leaning towards. What are your thoughts?

@aurka_arens
@aurka_arens Год назад
Maybe it will be better to use safety plugs on the open outlet parts to keep them from high humidity at least a bit? And i think you don`t need pebbles or perlite in the water tray to raise humidity, they are used only to keep a pot with plant out of sitting in water, just water will be fine and will still evaporate
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants Год назад
Thanks for watching. I don't know how I overlooked the humidity issue with electrical outlets.... But I don't plan on keeping my cabinet in super high humidity. I made a disclaimer comment that addresses this issue. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I also should have mentioned that I do plan on placing a plant on pebble tray.... But you are correct. You technically don't need pebbles for humidity lol
@shellym79
@shellym79 Год назад
There's a gap at the top of the Rudsta that you can feed wires thru if you feed them thru before you put the screws in and top on. That's what I did with mine because I didn't want to put a hole in it. I didn't need a humidifier. Mine stays above 80 in summer in winter it was 50 ish. I have my fans set to go off for 10 minutes every 5 hours. So far so good.v
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants Год назад
What??? I did not know about this hole. Do you have to take off the top to remove them?
@shellym79
@shellym79 Год назад
@@EverythingPlants yes. It's not a hole really, there's just a gap between the top of the glass and the bar that runs width wise. Just big enough for the cords to fit but not the plug part so you have to set up the wires first. If you remove the lid then unscrew the bar the runs from front to back on either side lift it place the wires thru and close it up. No holes needed. The wires have to run up to the top tho and out the side. Some may not like that look. I have 1 of the magnet spice racks on the back to hold the extension cords up high. I watched someone here on RU-vid do it unfortunately it was a year ago and I can't remember who it was. Maybe good growing. Not sure.

I have a milsbo wide. I have two barrinas t5 at top. At back of milsbo there’s a hole but it’s not large enough for the light cord so a few options, widen that hole or cut and rewire the light cable (this is what hubby did for me). No need to drill hole at base. Also, you don’t really need fans or other power pieces. My cabinet is not weather sealed and in terms of ventilation, I open up cabinet a few hours a week and have not had any issues. At beginning I did have two small fans that I run cord through gaps of doors but at the end I just took out.

@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants Год назад
Yes, I hear you're concerned..... But I don't plan on letting the humidity get very high. Outlets, I believe our certified for humidity ranging between 40 to 70% before you start to see any rust concerns. I most likely won't be watering in the cabinet. I like to remove plants from their spot and spray them down to clean the leaves. I'll let them dry and place them back in the cabinet. I'm not worried about any water getting into the outlet itself, but I may find a cover for the outlet just to be on the safe side
