I learned the hard way that on long overland trips, having a way to carry trash outside the car is essential. All of the ready-made solutions are designed to hang from a rear-mounted spare tire. But what if you don't have your spare back there?
Here's what I came up with, and to top it off, it was dirt cheap.
This is the bag I bought:
swisslink.com/collections/pac...
(as with any military surplus, the quantities are likely limited)
Other gear I use:

I have been doing pretty much the same thing for about two years I have a US Army backpack that is canvas but it’s still very waterproof and I have it attached to the back of my roof box. It doesn’t hang down below the roof level and I have it attached very securely so it lies flat against the box and it’s been super convenient for dirty clothes dirty shoes trash, wet items, whatever I don’t want to carry in my box or in the car.It doesn’t look too big or unwieldy, but it holds a lot !It is fine for garbage, but honestly I use it mostly for muddy or wet storage

I have to admit, looking for ways to accomplish something inexpensively has become kind of a fun challenge. While part of me would certainly like to be able to just buy the perfect product for every need without regard to cost, in some ways that almost seems a little boring. Of course, every now and then, I have no choice but to bite the bullet and just spend the money on the perfect product, so it's nice to offset those expenses by finding ways to save where I can. :-)

Nice mod! we also have no rear spare but we most often are carrying our kayaks up top so we stuff our garbage bag in one of them while in camp. We long ago learned to not store it inside the vehicle...mouse attractant for sure. We also have one of those spring loaded, pop up camping garbage containers, we use it when in bear country as we can sling it up into the tree tops.

This is so funny, I have been doing something very similar for a couple of years. I wanted a cheap trasharoo system but I don't have a spare tire on the back either. I got an old backpack from Goodwill, cut the shoulder straps, and attached them to my rack with the plastic slides. It hangs below my window, so no visibility issues. I actually bought a large magnet and mounted it inside the pack to secure it to my hatch. I drive on the freeway with it, zero issues. I line it with kitchen bags. It's super important since I use a luggable loo and I would not want that trash inside the truck ;-)

Really nice idea, months ago I even thought about using a tow hitch for the spare wheel and a trasharoo. But I massivly hate those ball-tow-hitches (just is so wobbly), and getting 2 inch hitches in Germany and then registering those is difficult and costly. So I thought I just get a trash-container from laboratory equipment with an airtight lid on top. Not much space, and inside the cabin but no smell and can be used as a chair as well. But this seems like a good solution too, only that my forester doesnt have scratches (yet)
@softroadingthewest
@softroadingthewest 3 года назад
That's not a bad solution! It's especially helpful when an item can serve two purposes like that. I considered doing something along those lines as well, but just could not envision where in the car I could possibly put it...every nook and cranny gets packed, especially on weeklong trips when I most need the trash container. And I agree, I'm not a fan of the hitch-mounted spare tire carriers. I prefer to just wait until I can get a custom swing out fabricated. Thanks Dennis!

My idea for my SH forester: Buy this same bag or similar, and with a little sewing, attach some of those bent flat hooks that are used on trunk mount bike racks. Then you can simply attach the bag directly to the back hatch. I don't have anything on the roof nearly that far back. Bonus: you can open the hatch with the bag fully attached!

I got one of those knockoff trasharoo bags - but then I do have a spare tire to mount it to. Those bags look kinda odd - spare tire or not. Most people you encounter don't even know it's a trash bag. But they do work - and if you ever had a bear or something smaller like raccoons go after your trash, at least it's outside. I've had animals go in there but they always found something to keep them happy and they didn't try to enter the vehicle. So there's a bonus - aside from smell protection - to carry your trash on the outside. Another plus I find is me frequently picking up odd pieces of trash along the trail I go. A bottle or can, a mylar baloon. So much easier to stop, pick it up and toss it in the outside trash. Everyone who takes this even a little serious will be happy to have a bag dangling on their back-end. Ridiculous or not - at least the people who have an outside trash have the intention to pack out what they packed in - and just maybe a little extra (out of course)
@softroadingthewest
@softroadingthewest 3 года назад
Excellent point! What usually happens to me is I end up accumulating cans, bottles, and other trail trash right at my feet in the driver's footwell because I don't have anyplace else to quickly put it when I hop out to grab something. It will be nice to be able to just throw it right in the trash!

Don, if it works for you, brother, do it! With my Jeep Compass with the spare tire inside in the wheel well, I used an old waterproof hunting backpack by Banded. I unhooked the shoulder harness at the bottom, draped them over the open door and used $2 compression straps from Walmart and ran them through the loops at the end of the shoulder straps secured each strap ends with buckles found in Walmart's craft section. The closed hatch keeps the pack flat on the door without it flapping. I positioned it so it wouldn't interfere with my rearview mirror vision; however, the pack negates the use of my rear hatch wiper. It's not a huge issue as I hardly ever use it. I just ensure that both of my side mirrors are always clean and fog free. Unfortunately, the Banded pack is a hunter's camo and my Compass is black so it is very noticeable. To maintain cleanliness inside the pack I keep a contractor bag inside so the garbage never touches the interior of the pack including any fluids. I always carry a roll of contractor bags in my spare tire well along with tools, survival shovel, a collapsible snow shovel ($20 in Walmart's auto section), Trail Boss ax, a short Marble axe, a Silky folding saw, IFAK, a portable battery jumper, chains and a small air compressor. I like that Czech surplus backpack and that it is OD green, too.
@softroadingthewest
@softroadingthewest 3 года назад
Nice! Sounds like you found a great solution. Yeah, it's true I can't use my rear wiper either with that on there. But with everything I have stacked up in the back of my car, I don't have much vision out the back window anyway. :-)

@6:52 time stamp I thought about the metal bits of the bag banging against the glass and causing it to break (shatter as safety glass is wont to) specially as the bag may be full. Maybe a wee bit of duck tape (plastic) to provide deformation the brittle glass cannot provide upon impact. Or maybe I'm being a bit too much of a worry wort. PS I kinda did the same on my XTERRA, but I used a drybag-type backback that I had laying around the house being unused.
@softroadingthewest
@softroadingthewest 3 года назад
I do have rubber pads attached to the metal bits. Still, having seen people try unsuccessfully to break windows with rocks and bats and hammers, even completely full of trash I don't think this would ever have enough weight/mass to break that window.
@arrowheadoverland
@arrowheadoverland 3 года назад
What if you bought long straps and buckles and ran them through the top and bottom gaps in your hatch. Then the trash container would be secure and out of the way when the hatch was open or closed. Instead of the straps running around the entire hatch maybe you could have hooks that grabs the top and lower gaps in the hatch.
@softroadingthewest
@softroadingthewest 3 года назад
In my case, I need the bag to be independent of the rear hatch. At camp, my rear hatch is open all the time, as that is my access to my kitchen, but I need the trash bag to be accessible also when the hatch is open. The slide to the side is a 15-second operation...worth the trouble for me, to have the trash bag handy. :-)

Do you mean the thread-in eye hook thing that screws into the back bumper? I did not think of that as a mounting point. That may be a better solution for some. I admittedly was only able to access that hole I'm using in the framework because my rear bumper cover is chopped.
@zccolby
@zccolby 3 года назад
@@softroadingthewest Yeah, the thread in eye/tow hook location. I only mentioned that because I figured it would be easier to access and would provide just 1 more location to clip things onto. Most of the forest service or BLM roads I drive require no permit, but it's fun to occasionally explore some of the OHV areas as well, especially the various dunes. It's just $10 for a two-year permit, and no test or anything required when it's for a street-legal vehicle, so it's no burden at all.

It's just me and my dog, don't do truck stuff, just camping. I can sleep in the 4runner but as a camper and fly angler, I am having a hard time with the dirty inside of an SUV being a solid choice. I double cab tacoma short bed would be the only configuration I would go for but I couldn't sleep in it unless I got a topper and slept diagonally like you in your new rig. I don't want an access cab because my dog. It's a tough choice but a truck bed is super hard to beat. I wouldn't trade the tundra for a double cab long bed as it's almost just as big as want I have now. It's a tough choice. I most likely will just keep and deal with the full size. I really want to downsize though and go farther down the trail and peace of mind navigating PDX streets. It's a tough decision.

@@tpseeker3367 Yeah, I see that I had this sort of folded out wrong. The sides do tuck underneath the cover nicely, I just wasn't paying attention when I set it up here. :-) I think it's gonna be fine but I'll definitely report back if I'm unable to keep rain out of it.

Sweet @@softroadingthewest I'll surely get one now. The whole time they were sticking out to me & I'm thinkin ahhh yes 4 day old garbage & along comes some rain with 2 days to go. The ripeness would have bears chasing us down the trails during summer. Keep up the great work. With the ideas you are sharing with everyone you are giving us extra funds for more time on the trails. Thanks Again

Maybe it's just cause I live in Alaska and I'm always super bear aware, but I really can't understand the trend of hanging a bag of trash on the outside of your vehicle? If you have that trash for long enough to stink up the inside of your car, it's way more than enough to waft odors to attract wildlife.. be it an annoying fly, to a rabidness raccoon, to a lethal predator like a bear or big cat

That was my initial reaction when I first saw Trasheroos a few years ago. But probably 90% of the rigs I have camped with over the past few years have had Trasheroos or similar spare-tire-mounted trash bags. To my knowledge, none of those friends/acquaintances have ever had animals getting after their trash. It's certainly never happened on any of the many nights I've been camped with a Trasheroo or two in camp. But this is in Oregon, and while we have bear here, it's rare to cross paths with them (I've lived here my entire life and have only seen one bear ever, which was just doing everything it could to get away from me as fast as possible). I can see how in California or Alaska bear country, this approach might not be advisable. But there are thousands upon thousands of rigs roaming the west with trash bags strapped to their spare tires. It seems generally to be non-problematic. Based on other people's general success with this approach, I'm willing to chance it. Guess we'll see what happens! You can be sure that if I have a problematic encounter, I will absolutely let everyone know! :-)

No. If that were the case, you wouldn't be able to put a camper on a pickup truck, or pack the back of your station wagon to the roof (which I've done countless times) or drive a U-Haul truck for that matter. What's required is two rearview mirrors, which I have on the exterior regardless of what is in or on the back of the car. It would only be illegal if I didn't have a passenger side exterior rearview mirror. That aside, I do only use this on the trail. I pack it into the car for the highway driving to and from my exploration area, but that is just for the wind/flapping, not for visibility. I already have obstructions inside my car that block the same area of the rear window anyway.

Umm... bears. Just sayin’. I’m not well versed in Oregon camping, but I tend to be where bears rip into things first and ask questions later... in that guttural grumbly language.

Almost every group camping trip I've ever been on, at least one or two rigs had Trasheroos (or similar exterior garbage bags). Never had any issues with animals. I might approach this differently if I was in heavy duty bear country, but based on the experience of nearly all my 4x4 friends who run Trasheroos (or similar) I'm not feeling too worried. We have bear in Oregon, but after having been here my entire life, I've only ever seen one, and I've not heard stories of bear encounters here like you hear about in California or Alaska. We'll see what happens. If it ends up attracting a bear, I will absolutely positively let you all know. :-)
