Hey everyone! A lot of people have been asking me to show them how I clean my rat cage so I decided to make a video.
I plan on making many more rat related videos on feeding, behavior and possibly a Q&A, let me know in the comments if you would like to see any.

It really depends, but I will do a full clean of it once a week which includes taking the bedding out, but spot clean it daily so wipe up any pee etc 😂

Once when I was cleaning, I sneezed just as I had taken out the litter tray and dropped it all over my floor...let’s just say between my litter being tiny balls and my floor being carpet, clean up took a little while 😅

You can add drain blockers so you can remove it easily, though it normally will clog without one and will need to be removed by hand

It depends whether later on you will still want to look after them because if you decide you don't want to look after them any more it's unfair to your parents if they have to look after them.

Hi I'm not Emilogy but yes if the floors are wire then yes they can get something called bumble foot which is very painful and they can also break the toes and little feet :( so if you have wire levels just put some thick cardboard and fleece if you want :)))

For one you can’t just have one rat. So you need to tell that to mum and dad or whoever. And for your cage it should be in a safe place if you have other animals like a dog or cat. If you do you are going. To have to keep the cage in a spot they can’t get to or keep your room door shut. Find a place where they won’t get freezing. Like right by a air conditioner is bad. Or a heater if they can some how get burned or over heated. Just find a free place that is safe. Anything else??

For gods sake don’t put the cage by a window or directly in front of a window ! That’s a huge Change in temperature for any animal and can kill them ! My friend fried her hamster from having it in a bin cage whilst having it in-front of a window

I don't know which video to ask this but my girl must have been weaned to early. She will NOT chew on anything hard and I am sick of taking her into the vet every month or so to get her teeth clipped. I have tried different blocks (I think pine is too soft for her), I have a wooden bird toy, not one chew mark. I have banana chips, larger food items and flavored horse treats. Nothing. Any ideas or am I stuck with her not chewing. She loves to chew soft things of course. Thank you!

Rats should keep their teeth down naturally on just their main food diet alone. If she’s needing her teeth trimmed every month it’s probably because they’re misaligned and causing issues unfortunately if this is the case it will be something you’ll have to manage for life

I believe they can have onions in small moderations, wouldn't recommend giving them it all the time, and make sure you definitely don't give them raw onion at all as this can cause them stomach upset and other problems, I think spring onions would come under this. I just avoid this by not giving mine any onion at all as theres plenty of other things they can eat :)

how often do you clean? ive heard people do a simple cleaning once or twice a week and one deep clean once a month. what do you recommend?? and sorry if you already said it in the video i may have not heard but hopefully i did not. btw your little ratties are adorable!!

I fully clean my cage about every 1.5 weeks. This includes emptying out the bedding and completely washing the whole contents like in this video. It honestly all depends on the smell, and how many rats you have etc, but over cleaning can sometimes be a bad thing in terms of odour as they immediately want to scent mark everything to make it smell like their own. Many people will spot clean their cage a couple times a week, which is a good idea to keep on top of things before you can get around to doing a full clean! Usually for me this just includes wiping down a few surfaces that may be getting a bit gross throughout the week :)

i recently got two boys at 3 months old and they're still getting use to me so this video was a great help ! Also i've noticed you have like no real shelves in your cage and i've been wanting to take my single shelf as there'd just so much more room for toys etc , just worried my boys will get hurt jumping, obviously i'll create layers with lots of hammocks and other hangy things and maybe get some ladders in places, i just wanted to ask any tips of not having shelves, sorry if this is a silly question! ps. our cages are very similar, you'rs is a bit taller than mine xo

What kind of spray are u using to disinfect the cage? I couldn’t find any on the internet.

You should be able to find some by searching "pet safe disinfectant". The spray in the video looked like the same as the one I use - "Johnson's Clean And Safe" which I buy from Pets At Home. Any pet shop will stock cage disinfectant, either in store or online.

I would recommend a 1:20 bleach to water ratio or 50/50 vinegar to water, though I think that the vinegar cleaner smells kinda bad.... make sure you whipe it all off with a paper towel afterwards to make sure there isn’t any bleach or vinegar left. My local vet recommended the bleach one to me, and I’ve been using it for my hamster. Works great! The bleach works really well if your rats get sick, if they get sick I would recommend 1:10 ratio, the same 1:10 ratio works great if you get mites as well!

Hi Imee. Can you recommend any good ways of cleaning my rats cage whilst they are still skittish? I want to clean their cage out this weekend and they have been with me since last Saturday. Me and my bf have tried luring them with baby food on our hands which seems to work for the most part but they are so skittish that we can't pick them up. Last thing I want to do is force it as I feel that it won't gain their trust and will scare them even more. I have a playpen that is big enough for me or my bf to sit in and I'm hoping if we get all 3 boys out one of us can sit in there and offer food in hopes that it will help them bond with us better. A few people have suggested luring them out with food or into a carrier so we can transport them into the playpen but I'm really stumped on whats the best approach for my little guys. You know your stuff so I thought I'd ask you :)

I know this was a while ago but if someone reads this and has the same issue, when they run into their home, just pick that up with them in it and put it into wherever you put them when you clean. My rats weren't handled before we bought them and were very skittish at the start. I got them to crawl on me within two days, but I still can't pick them up so I still use the house method.

I actually got the cage second hand! You can find it in shops like Pets at home (The ferplast Furat cage) but I got it for less than half the price from someone who had only used it for a few weeks, it was in perfect condition and saved me lots of money!

Also a great place to get cheap cages is eBay just search up cage I would recommend getting a bird cage and then buying your own platforms and hammocks

My rats sister just died 3 days ago and next Sunday I’m getting two more for her :) 2 years ago my sisters rat died and we still have the cage so that’s what I want to use to keep them for the quarantine, she died from respiratory infection so what should I clean that cage with and How long until I can put the 2 girls into the cage after them being ok with each other because I’ve never done this before..

Deep clean (like in the video) at least once a week, and spot clean as necessary! I usually scoop out any soiled bedding when I feed them in the evening.

They don't smell so long as you keep the cage clean! Give the cage a thorough clean at least once a week, and spot clean the areas they use at toilets daily - it's also possible to litter train them to make that job easier! Supposedly females are less smelly than males, although I haven't found that in my experience. There are plenty types of deodorising bedding, you just have to make sure it's dust free as dust can irritate their breathing.

Actually the cleaning depends on the size of the cage if you have a bigger cage spot clean it at least once a week and a deep cleaning it once a month but if you have a smaller cage spot clean it everyday deep cleaning once a week

Can rats climb up from just one rope hanging? Or they need more tools? I hang my diy hammock but it seems like they don’t know how to go there. I’ve just got my rats 2 days ago tho.

I know this reply is quite late, but hopefully it might help someone in the same situation! Rats are incredible climbers, so unless they're very old or otherwise infirm they should manage to get just about anywhere in their cage just by climbing the bars. Rats that you've only had for a couple of days are adjusting to their new surroundings and might take a little time to be brave enough to explore. You can always put a treat in their hammock to lure them up too, they'll be able to smell it.

+terry dot org Hi! A tank isn't great for rats because they enjoy having height and climbing, tanks can also cause ammonia to build up which can make them very ill. Rats will need a much bigger cage than dwarf hamsters do too 😊

I will always recommend getting rats from a reputable breeder! That way you know the genetics of your rats and any health issues they may have and they will be tamed beforehand by the breeder, which is something you most likely won't get from a pet shop so they will take a lot more work and can also have a lot of health issues. Rehoming from a rescue is another option which is rewarding but if you are a first time owner I would recommend getting them from a breeder if you can find one in your area, as they can help you and give you advice along the way. Three female rats is a good number as they like to live in groups, plus if something should happen to one of the females you will not be left alone with a single rat 😊

Ugh pet stores are horrible. My friend got a feeder rat from petsmart cause she felt bad. It was sick and killed her other rat. I told her not to put the pet store rat with her main rats. Absolutely not from a pet store no matter how bad you feel. I feel horrible but there’s nothing you can really do.

Sadly this is a mistake a lot of people make when buying from pet stores. They do it to get that particular rat / animal out of a bad situation, but it will only be replaced by another rat by the store, which will then be in the same situation and the cycle continues :(

Imee's World and what you said is something everyone should know before getting ratties. But I think people get too anxious knowing they could get a rat from a pet store faster than a breeder. But that’s not the case if some people are patient. But waiting for a healthy rat is way better in the long run.

Sooo, you left all of the accessories unwashed..ladders - wood - bacteria says yummy, ropes cotton/acrylic - same, unless it's an antibacterial acrylic which costs a fortune ;)

Sooo you assumed from this super old video that because I didn’t show something that must mean it never gets done. a weekly cage clean won’t consists of cleaning every single item. Wooden items and ropes get soaked and washed once a month, but I failed to mention that, because it was my first video and I didn’t know what I was doing 👍🏼

Imee's World yeah ! She does ! I was looking in pets at home for a cage and the biggest cage in there was like 300 sq inches ! So I ordered a rat cage. Unfortunately though I can’t get a dwarf because of the bar spacing

The minimum cage size for a hamster is 450 square inches if floorspace also, they prefer width and length more than height, so i recommend bin cages just make sure its at least 70 quarts!
