Hey friends! Today's video is on 2 different ways to control the power going to your printer. The first is the BIGTREETECH Relay V1.2 and the second is a tp_link smart plug. They both have their drawbacks but, they complement each other well.

Thanks Man just tested the smart plug hook up and it all worked first time. Been looking all over to do this without using an external relay. True you don't get the additional features from the relay. I have one of those coming but this works awesome. Thanks for the good work and the Git page!

I’m glad to hear it helped you out! I’m about to post another video that briefly mentions another “issue” with using the relay. But it’s kinda specific to my setup

Hello, I commented on your CanBus videos and am Happy to report printer is up and running again. Smart power on is such a cool use of the Klipper interface, and I was rofl when you started the printer with Alexa xD. I like the selection of topics you are going over in your videos, Keep it up👍:3

Yo! So humbled that you're keeping up with my videos. Glad to hear you got it back up and running! I'll be making a video dedicated to the EBB42/IO2CAN in the next few weeks! Funny story about that Alexa clip... I was editing this video and played that clip. Unfortunately, Alexa heard it and decided to shut my printer off halfway through a print lol! Thank you for your kind words. I'm so happy to have you as a viewer!

If you want to play safer, you could put the BTT Relay on the 24V line (or whatever voltage your MCU uses) instead of the mains side. This would isolate the MCU, but would leave the 3D printer PSU running. This could allow you to use the printer PSU to also power the Pi, saving a power outlet and also allowing you to do a full shutdown using your smart outlet in an emergency.

There are so many ways to set it up! I think it makes more sense the way you describe as in this video I’ve got a Smart Plug -> Mechanical Switch -> Relay -> PSU -> MCU. 3 ways to cut power on the same line rather than putting it at different steps. I did however want to avoid leaving the PSU on all the time

That's awesome. I had no idea moonraker could talk to other ip devices like that.

Honestly, I'm starting to believe that moonraker is underrated. It has so many cool features that I don't see anyone talk about...

I did something similar by using arduino and a relay so I can set delay between power on/off so my pi can fully boot up/shutdown. This way I can fully shut everything off (even the pi) with small auxiliary power supply running.

Would you mind going a little more in depth on your methods? A lot of people would probably like to know! (Myself included) Or better yet you could make a video on it if you’re interested!

When ever mains voltage is involved I use an extension cord with switch so I can be as far away as possible to switch it back on for the first time 😂

Haha! Even after double and triple checking I still feel like I’m going to be in an electroboom video!

I have a setup just like this!! So alike in fact that using the phrase "Alexa, turn off my 3D printer" tripped my system. 😵‍💫 Lucky I wasn't printing anything! 😅 I've also recently started using Klipper after having a Marlin/Octoprint setup for a while, let's hope it gets a little easier with time!

Haha! I guess I should've named it something a little more obscure for that reason! Glad I didn't cancel your print! Klipper is definitely super cool. I'm starting to learn how to write macros in preparation for some more advanced things I plan to add! Thanks for your comment!

Would having the smart plug and wiring the outlet to an arc fault interupt breaker back at the box archive the same thing?
@SpencersDesk
@SpencersDesk 6 месяцев назад
I think you’re asking about wiring something that would detect a power issue on the AC side of things, past the outlet in your wall. I’m not an electrician or anything, but my intuition is that if you had a short on your motherboard, that would be isolated from the arc fault interrupt because of the power supply being between the two. I imagine the interrupt would only detect an issue if it was with the power supply?

I have my 2 printers connected to a single dell 3050 micro. Is it still possible to use the relay with that since no GPIO pins?
@SpencersDesk
@SpencersDesk 5 месяцев назад
I don't think so. What you can do is connect a USB cable from the dell to a Raspberry Pi Pico and use that as a microcontroller. You'll just need to set that up as a second MCU in your Klipper config
