Mark, Mark, Mark......Don't use invisible thread in your bobbin. Just use a regular thread that matches your backing. You'll be so glad and not frustrated with the mess you'd get if you tried to have invisible thread in the bobbin. Just practice on a quilt sandwich that you make for a trial. The two different thread types will sew together well. Your boot quilt is going to be wonderful and I love the Eagle, Globe and Anchor applique. YOu are a true inspiration. Thanks for all you're giving.
I agree. I did my first quilt with invisible thread on the back. I have a ton of eyelashing (where the thread makes big loops on the back) plus it feels rough and plastic-y after many, many washes. Maybe a shimmery thread like superior threads...it has a sheen and is lovely, thin and strong. Gold would be gorgeous, but do you and it will be perfection! Thanks for sharing your journey and this beautiful quilt build☺️ (btw, found you through your interview with Karen on Karen's quilt circle and am in love with all you stand for, thank you!)
I'm way new and keep finding reasons not to "just get it done..." (Shout-out to Karen). When you said that the darkness falls away while you're quilting, something shifted for me. I have a lot to learn from you and it's not just about quilting.
Bravo for your quest to learn more, and frankness about the learning journey. Mistakes loom large in the moment, but fade with perseverance to an overall goal....lessons that take time to learn.
Thank you so much I really really enjoyed watching you show us how to do appliqué and I’m really really looking forward to seeing what you do next. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags
Loved your interview with Karen! You were great. I can’t wait to see this finished quilt! My son served in Marine Corps 2009-2013, active duty. Thanks for all you do. I love your idea about a place for those suffering trauma to just come to see.
Your quilt top is coming together nicely! I had no idea it was made of pieces of your uniforms all stitched together. I love the effect it gives. Im a new quilter 😁 i just finished my first one last month and have just started making hexie flowers to applique on my next quilt so I'll be learning with you too! Thank you for the wonderful interview with Karen and sharing your story. I'm so grateful to find your channel 😊 sending love to you and your family x
You can buy white freezer paper on a roll in supermarkets. It is cheaper than those sheets. Saw you on with Karen Brown today. You have come a long way and I wish you continued success.
Have you thought about having your own line of quality quilting fabric for your military themes? We all have family members associated with the military and make quilts for them, not to mention Quilts of Valor and the VA charity projects, etc.. We know there’s lots of patriotic fabric out there, but your themes are unique. Your innovative style appeals to all of us and I would sure buy your line of fabric for my projects. Just sayin…..
Awesome what you are doing. Saw you with Karen . she did the interview. You are so inspiring. You could bring a needy person into your home on a small scale to see how it goes teaching them how to quilt.. If it goes well then go on a grander scale. If you can.Just helping one person makes a difference. Just my thoughts.
Just a heads up about the clear thread. In my experience, it works great to attach patches to shirts or vests. But it's a nightmare to get the tension right when sewing plain fabrics. It really puckers. But I absolutely love that quilt top!
Coffee and watching Mr Mark. Something to brighten this overcast day! Hello to Mrs Yvonne 👋🏻. That quilt is going to be awesome, can’t wait to see it finished. I’ve never done appliqué. Hope y’all have a wonderful week. Take care and God bless y’all. 😀❤️
My husband served in the Army 82nd Airborne 4 yrs, then he was Border Patrol Agent 22yrs retired now thankfully. We moved to San Antonio Tx after he retired
Another fantastic quilt! I cannot wait to see the applique ironed on with the black and gold state's names fabric. That is an added touch that you do so well Mark.
Love your imagination Mark. Every project is a new learning experience. You and I seem to watch the same channels and use bits and pieces of what works for you. You're doing great. Everyone does things differently. Some people find one way easier than another person's way. I used to practice making doll sized quilts. I could practice and still make money!
I use invisible (clear) thread for light colors and smoke for dark colors on the top for all my applique projects, and I use an open toe walking foot. I use regular thread in the bobbin. However, I have a 385 Kenmore (made by Janome) which I have no problem using invisible thread in the bobbin. I use the invisible thread in the bobbin when I sew the binding down so it doesnt show on the back. I recommend you try your machine at least once to see if invisible thread will work in the bobbin. It wont work in the bobbin of my Jazz 2. BTW, Mark, love your videos!!!
Have you thought about using the Brother Scan n Cut to cut out all your appliqué pieces? Becky Thompson, Power Tools with Thread has lots of You Tube Videos she even shows you how to create the files for the sewing machine which will allow the sewing machine to sew the appliqué pieces down so you don’t have to worry about making all the twists and turns while sewing the appliqué pieces.
This is a fantastic project! And it is going to take some time to get that applique completed but so worth it I think. I agree with some of the others that you should reconsider using the clear bobbin thread. Hooray for you!!
Mark you can do it. Karen s show with you was great. You got this - use black thread on top and something to match the bell on the bottom, but not invisible thread. It's hard to work with in the bottom for me. Nice job....
I have a question.. Could you have taped several pieces of tracing paper on to the wall to cover the whole logo?.. cause that is what it looks like on the wall after you have traced it. I LOVE the quilt... and the serviceman/woman will love this quilt.
I was always told that you cannot use the clear thread in bobbin as the tension will be wrong. I love all your ideas and enjoy watching your videos. I have the Bernina 475 and love it.
Reynolds wrap works as well. Same thing... I've used it to trace different sizes of apparel pieces. I used it for applique as well. I used my sliding glass door instead of a white board! Improvise, adapt, and overcome! I used pencil as well. Best and bond light, or even water base Elmer's glue stick. It won't gum up the machine. I used painter's tape. It didn't work well for my painting projects, but worked well with my sewing, go figure right? I had an applique stitch on my $65 floor model machine.
Hi, well done a gorgeous quilt in the making. A suggestion, practice first, on JPC just plain cotton with the clear monofilament in bobbin Before trying on the actual quilt. All layers just as your idea for doing it. However, what made you decide to use it? Have you considered a variegated red, white & blue on bobbin? Well keep,up your brilliant work. Keep em’ coming. Your camera person does a fine job too. Waving to you from Michigan
Hey Mark, excellent work so far!! I’ve heard you are not supposed to put the invisible thread on the bobbin but ok for top loading ….. let me know how well your machine handles that. I also have a Brother PQ1500SL
Gosh. Just catching up on some videos and saw you are making this quilt. I need to make one too. I have all of my son's uniforms. Would you be willing to sell your applique pattern?
