I put a PopSocket in the middle of my 6x24” ruler to make it easier to lift and move. It also keeps my fingers away from the cutting edge and hanging off the other edge for stabilization. ❤

I print my pattern pieces from freezer paper, (You can get them that goes through your printer). Then you can iron the pattern pieces to your material, then it just peel the freezer paper off and it can be reused multiple times. I use this so the pattern pieces doesn’t move on the fabric when your cutting.

Random scraps of interfacing at my house get fused crazy quilt fashion to the backs of favorite patterns that I use over and over … seriously it’s the best! It makes paper more durable and is especially sweet with tissue patterns. After fusing, the tissue behaves more like a fabric and folds up nice and tight to store, it isn’t damaged by pin holes, it grips to the fabric you are cutting out nicely and you may not even need pins❤

So yesterday I walked into our local quilt shop & was given an $80 credit...to my amazement they had the Quilters Select rulers. I got the 6 x12 & used it today for cutting out my Amber Crossbody, which has about a hundred pieces (seems like) AND OMG I would have given up with alllll my other rulers I have. THIS WAS AMAZING!!!! Now I need to replace the other rulers, because the difference is just too phenomenal. THANK YOU THANK YOU for this video Jess!!!

Great video. One thing I learned years ago when rotory cutting large or long pieces was to use the grid lines on the mat. If you start by lining up your first cut with the grid on the mat you don't have to make so many marks on the fabric and it is still fast and accurate. As for making it more enjoyable. I asked myself two questions. Do I have the best tools and environment for the task, then I made changes that were needed. Who doesn't like new sewing toys? I also started thinking of it as its own fun task. I try to include my favorite beverage and a good audiobook, and make sure I give myself plenty of time.(Fused pieces are best left to set over night.) I love KAI products, their rotory blades stay sharp so much longer then the cheap ones.

I really enjoy watching your videos. I have learned some things from you. In fact, you are the reason I got into bag making. I stumbled on one of your videos one day and I was hooked. I just thought I would give you a few tips that I use. I hope they will help you. The first thing I do after I print a pattern is I laminate each page then cut out my pattern. The pattern lasts a long time and it's easy to trace around. As for interfacing, I cut my pieces from my interfacing and then iron that to my fabric. That way I don't get goo everywhere. I do a lot of my work from my ironing board because I can't stand very long so I sit at my ironing board. I have my ironing board beside my sewing machine adjusted low for sitting. I have had to change several covers before I figured out to cut out the interfacing first. I hope this has been helpful to you.

Since I usually make more than one bag and have found when I cut around a paper pattern (sometimes I trace, sometimes not), it gets smaller each time (operator head space problem), I purchased the flexible cutting mats at the dollar tree and use them to make the pattern pieces. You get 2 mats for $1.25 and that is less expensive than some of the other stencil/mats used for cutting patterns. I also labeled my paper scissors at the grip so there is no mistaking them when someone wants to cut something.

I really enjoyed this video, lots of really useful tips! I have been cutting out patterns with a 28mm rotary cutter. Game changer!! It's small size makes cutting so easy. Also, I am using my Cricut Easy Press (12x10) for fusing interfacing. I am making little gift pouches and am able to add the SF101 and Fusible Fleece 9 pieces at a time. I also have been using the Ball jar glass canning weights for pattern weights. They are awesome!! Heavy yet slide easily to glide around the edges and hold it down.

I saw this on another RU-vidr. She cut out her fabric pieces. With the interfacing glue up, she laid the fabric pieces wrong side down onto the interfacing( wrong side up). She used parchment paper to lay on top of all pieces and ironed/ pressed. No glue on iron nor ironing surface. I started doing that. 🤗

I was taking a break from cutting my pieces for the Making Backpack and was FREAKING out when the pieces weren't EXACTLY as the pattern called for! I watched this video while I was taking my break and it was perfect timing! It brought down my anxiety as I am OCD (self-diagnosed, of course) and stress out about minor things being off. Once I went back to cutting having just watched this video, my stress level was a lot lower! I appreciate your insight! It really resonated about how quilters need things to be exact, but bag making is more forgiving! I am new to bag making and have been more in the quilting world prior to this attempt I am currently working on.

For some reason I have been attracted to those old heavy iron irons at estate sales & find them really useful for making bags now. Thanks Jess! It was somehow reassuring that you have the same issues with the less than pleasant side of bag making - the prep work! I have days where there's just not enough time for prepping a whole bag and sewing it. So I like to take a few patterns I want to make and break the work up. One night I will cut out all of the pieces from the 2 or 3 patterns while watching a Christmas movie. The next night I will cut all of the fabrics, stabilizers, etc., another time I'll do all the fusing and in between I watch your videos or familiarize myself with the instructions. Then when I have the time, I can get right to the fun stuff and make the bags! I always have 2-4 projects ready to go at any given time. Merry Christmas!

For cutting on the fold I print out two pattern pieces, cut them out except for a half inch where it says 'cut on fold' match up those 'cut on fold' lines and tape them together. I can then outline the entire piece without having to move it. (I put one pattern piece upside down.)

I think that I'm going to start doing this. Every time (or nearly every time) I cut a panel piece on the fold, my pattern seems wonky after cutting it. One half is not exactly the same as the other... No matter how hard I try. I do pin the paper pieces to the material.

Thank you so much for this video. I love your teaching videos where you discuss the basic "how to" almost more than watching the ones where you create a bag. You are such a great teacher! I struggle with cutting pattern pieces out on fabric. I pin the paper to the fabric and cut around it with my scissors. But the fabric pieces seem to have stretched or isn't the exact same as the paper. And anything cut on the fold, one side looks good, and the finished cut seems to be larger or sometimes smaller on one side or a bit wonky. Maybe I should use weights instead of pinning them to my woven fabric? It's so frustrating! That’s why I haven’t even tried fussy cutting my materials since I have issues cutting it regularly. Do bag pattern pieces need to be cut on the grainline and you need to true up the straight edges first - like garments need to be? And in bag-making, does it matter if you lift the material up when cutting it? I was recently told that my scissor’s blade needs to stay on the table and not lift it up to cut or lift up the fabric as it won't produce a proper cut..

I took Jess’s recommendation on the Kai scissors and I’m in love. I thought my Gingher scissors were amazing but those Kai scissors beat them hands down. If you feel like your cuts with scissors don’t look as good, try Kai scissors. I found them on Wawak. As for a rules, if you are on a budget shopping at JoAnns, I would recommend Omnigrip (green rulers not the yellow Omnigrid) rules. Do not be tempted by cheap Fiskar rulers. You will be so much happier with Omnigrip. You can use 50%/60% off coupons on these rulers to make them more affordable and slowly build your collection.

Honestly, I know 2 rulers work but if you are going to work quickly and accurately go and buy a large square ruler and be able to measure 13 x 15 easily. I have a large 18 x 18 square and it's so much easier to cut those larger pieces more accurately. Another thing to do which is safer and easier when cutting through multiple layers making a straight edge you should put the ruler and fabric where you are going to cut on the left or right from bottom to top, not above going left to right. Much safer and easier to keep the pressure on the ruler if it's parallel to you. I have been a quilter for 25 years and l am OCD about cutting. Thanks for the info.

Question, why don’t you just use the grid on your cutting mat and connecting the lines on each side of whatever you’re measuring?
@ChristineKrannich
@ChristineKrannich Год назад
Sadly, not all of the mats are accurately marked. Mats can warp depending on how/where they are stored as well so the grid lines can distort. Once I build a 4x8 table, I am buying an unmarked self-healing mat so I don’t have to deal with the trying to ignore the lines. It can be difficult!

I put on outside what category is in the folder and then on tabs inside I'll put the names of the patterns/ what size they are ... they store great, and sit on the shelf for easy access when I need them.... adult clothing patterns I clip them together and have them on display strips with s-hooks in the closet (keeps them nice and flat)

I have a Fiskars ruler that has thick black lines with a white outline around them. I CANNOT use it! I need a ruler that has thin, clear lines!! The ones I use the most are the 6x24, 3x12, 6x12 and 1x6 of course. I put them all together if I need to cut anything bigger. I added tiny strips of the clear but textured medical tape to the back of all of my rulers to make them non slip. I bought a small rotary cutter from the Dollar Tree that I use ONLY for paper pattern cutting. I cut all straight lines with my small rotary cutter and a ruler. Then scissors for the curves. I've yet to get an air erasing marker. That's next on my list. Have you tried the sewline trio marking pen? Curious as to how others feel about them. So glad you made this video! I will add one more thing. When cutting my pattern pieces initially, depending on the pattern lines... I stay consistent. If they're thick lines, I cut in the middle of them, but do that for every piece. I find that as long as you're consistent, it works out fine. I do get ocd about my fabric pattern pieces matching the paper pattern perfectly. I'm trying to break myself from that. I use pins on ALL of my projects. I use them inside the seam allowance. Clips move, makes my fabric shift, and they're bulky. So I use my pins and have no issues. Thanks again. I know this was a much requested video!!! One other thing... I HAVE to cut both pages of the patterns that are on the fold. I find that if I use the pattern piece with my fabric folded, the fabric is too big.

I cut exclusively on vinyl banner material and would love to discover a better way to make a template that is more exact than cardboard templates. Would you have any solution that would work so that I can get a more exact cut? Thank you, love the videos.

The rulers I use (creative grid) have the grit lasered into the back of the ruler. So it’s not something they added into the ruler that will wear down.

I'm not one who likes to cut horizontally in front of me. I will rotate my mat to cut vertically similar to a smaller rotating mat, which I will use on smaller cuts.

Once I have my paper pattern cut out I glue it to cardboard and for all the cut on fold pieces I print an extra piece and add it to the other piece making a full size piece

I feel the same way about cutting out pattern pieces as you! My least favorite step and then it def ties with ironing the interfacing. I think it's exhausting! Am I a baby?😁👶

Thanks so much for this video, every single thing I think when cutting fabric and interfacing was mentioned, in video and the comments (so it's not only me then)! I love the non slippy rulers, I'm in the UK so trying to source these rulers isn't so easy, may have to hit up an American friend to source and send to me. But I have a question as you are the ruler queen, if you or your amazing viewers can tell me where I can locate a clear ruler with the fractions marked, as this would be just perfect. I cannot find one in UK, I've been through every page on Amazon. I have loads with the little line marks - but I'm visually impaired, so I'd love the actual numbers 1/4 1/8 etc marked on the rulers. Any help with that greatly appreciated. I learn so much from your videos. Thanks so much.

When cutting the zipper do you use your good Kai scissors or a cheaper pair. I know the zipper tape is nylon coil but I’m scared to use my good scissors. I cut with my good scissors on the tape part and then use my cheap scissors to cut the coil part. I swear I see bag makers use their good scissors for cutting over the coil.

My conclusion from this is that my rulers are too slidy. None of mine have the magic backing and slip all over the place. I was admiring your ability to cut under the ruler and thinking that when I try that it ends in disaster. I’m sure you have amazing skills developed over hours of bag making, but I think that I’m not helped by my slidy rulers! Thanks for the interesting video

Before even getting to cutting pattern pieces, I have a problem ensuring that a straight edge of the pattern piece is in line with the weft or warp of the fabric. This is particularly troublesome when the fabric has certain patterns. I usually try to start with lining up the straight edge of a pattern piece with the selvage, but that doesn't guarantee a straight edge for some reason (maybe fabric shifting when I'm cutting with a rotary cutter?) and for subsequent pieces. So my question is, how does one ensure that the straight edge of a pattern piece is in parallel/perpendicular to the fabric? Any advice/tips are appreciated.

I wish there were acrylic templates for popular bag patterns. My fine motor skills suck, partly due to age, and partly due to a spinal cord injury. I struggle with curves terribly.

I don't have your ruler make, but I'm wondering if it is etched into the surface which is why it doesn't scrape off? Yes, I'm the same I trace and then cut. Although, I do use my ruler and rotary cutter on the straight bits. I have some vintage 1lb weights I use as weights, but in a pinch, I use my scissors as a pattern weight lol I know with the thick lines on sewsweetness patterns are designed to cut on the outside of the line.
