How I Decluttered 80% Of Our Home & What I WOULDN’T Do Again | Mega March Motivation Collaboration
Over the past year and a half I’ve decluttered approximately 80% of the belongings in our home….and two storage units. The first two questions I usually get are “where do you even start?” And “when do you find time to declutter?” I’ll answer both of those questions today, along with how my “why” kept me motivated to keep going and what I WOULDN'T do again as I decluttered my whole house! Next week I'll share what I WOULD do again and what has kept our house in pretty good shape.
Share this video with a friend: • How I Decluttered 80% ...

How funny! I literally just this afternoon boxed up most of the decorative items in my living room and bedroom, because I'm tired of dusting them! It will be so much quicker to just dust flat surfaces. I'm not ready to get rid of them completely, they are things I enjoy seeing on the shelves, but I don't dust nearly as often as I should because I dread picking everything up and dusting it too. I'm going to put the box away for a while and see if I actually miss them or not.

@@sunflowers730 In Japan they take one ornament out of a cupboard to stand on the surface. When they've had enough of really looking at that one, they put it away, and bring out another. A good way to really focus on each ornament, and the others don't get dusty in the cupboard :)

New to your channel and love it! I'm 71 yrs old and have lived in this apartment for 23 yrs now. My place has needed decluttering for many yrs but I was still working my way out of "life trauma's", and couldn't get focused for anything. I also couldn't afford a caregiver. So here I am now, really ready to trim things down and in just a matter of a few months I've lost the ability to walk. I'm trying to declutter from my scooter but it is hard to do. So, for what it's worth... people, watch her video and declutter before life moves so fast that something takes away your ability to sort your own belongings. You really don't want someone else doing it for you. God bless this lovely woman who's name I don't know.

We moved to a smaller house in retirement that had no basement and a much smaller garage. I made up my mind that I just flat out didn't want to store anything. In my last house I spent so much time cleaning storage areas, so I used a spare bedroom as a staging area and I actually sold every tote on Facebook (in 10 minutes...guess we all have stuff). As I decorated the house I shopped the room and every day I picked through stuff in there and made a donation run every friday. Once the house was decorated I gave away everything left in the room. Everything I own you can see or open a cupboard and closet to see. Nothing in storage was a weight off my mind, it was just a bunch of delayed decisions. Having a big house just causes you to have excuses for not dealing with stuff.

Brilliant! I’m actually upsizing to a much bigger house - but that doesn’t mean more stuff. I actually plan to have nothing stored away bar a few diy things, paint tins and that sort of thing that you need but don’t want to see! Everything will be visible in a cupboard or shelf. Why have things that are hidden away.
@poodlegirl55
@poodlegirl55 3 года назад
@@1588chrissy when I got done painting a room I poured the leftover paint in a jar and put in the back of the closet. Great for touch ups and I threw the cans away, they only rust and let the paint go bad anyway. The very last room...the previous junk room...I mixed all the half cans together and painted. It came out gray. No paint cans left....I was pretty freaking serious about no storage haha.

@@poodlegirl55 that is hilarious! I also pour all into jars - very handy for touch-ups and all uniform in shape and size so easy to store. I don’t mind having a small cupboard with these types of things (like brushes, rollers, tools) but I refuse to use my home as a warehouse for shops!

I started looking at what I called just junk, extra linen, books, furniture, televisions, you name it, I had it and most to none being used, stored in some of those bins. I offered what ever the grown kids wanted to keep and donated the rest to anyone needing it, the neighbors, friends. I took a month to get uncluttered, still living the same, and I wouldn't go back to that again. For myself, I am mid-seventies age, I don't ever want my kids to deal with anything like this after I'm gone. A little encourage to anyone of age, really, I had to take care of my Mom's and it makes it very hard on your heart trying to decide what to keep, I ended with a lot and she wouldn't have wanted me to struggle over making those decision. I’ve been stuck for a long time and it’s been so discouraging cause even though my desire to do it is there, I become intimidated by the mess, the boxes of junk I’ll put aside and basics my bedroom became the room I stuffed everything in in order to have the rest of the house look decent. I always feel no peace and I know it’s the house, It literally had stopped me from being successful at homeschooling my kids, having Bible studies in my home that I feel God is leading me to do cause I’m always waiting to get it together but it’s like a battle in my mind and I decided that I’m not letting satan do this to me no longer! He’s under my feet snd I’m taking authority over my household. It’s overwhelming and often I start going through stuff and especially papers takes awhile and it tedious and I don’t end up finishing and I end up not following through to complete it and get an entire room finished. So I’m thinking I have to approach it differently like the onion method that Minimalist Mom channel talks about cause I started watching her now snd I’m inspired. I love how you talk about your goal being to grow in relationship with God having that time for him cause that’s exactly why I want to do this! I want to do Gods will and he’s calling me and I know he’s been dealing with me on the house awhile now in order to move forward and serve him snd my family better( I’m a mom of 5 with 2 step kids) I was a minimalist when I got married and had peace. But I had no idea my husband was I’ll say boarder line horder, we always stored his stuff for when we get a bigger house, It became a nightmare having so much that he didn’t want me to touch. So this is what makes it a bit harder. He’s trying and I’m being more consistent to pray for him to fully surrender to God as I have now, cause All this messy life actually cause much craziness and eventually I fell from the faith and into sin after awhile but God showed me I could do nothing apart from him! I repented of all the years I didn’t trust him and committed to praying and reading the Bible and I found the true Jesus of the gospels and have experienced so much deliverance and healing for me and my family! It’s been amazing the power of God. Anyone reading this please pray I overcome this stronghold and constantly persevere so get rid of 80 % of our stuff and my husband jump on board so we can have the peace, joy and freedom to serve God to the fullest, focusing on the things that really matter. I’m done allowing this to torment me, I believe I can do it with Gods helping me to not give up. Thank you so much.❤️🙌🏼📖🙌🏼❤️

The Clutter Clarity channel is great, as are The Minimalists, Minimal Mom, ClutterBug, and Dana K. White. The most important thing to realize is that we’re all different, and what we do with our stuff is a reflection of how our brains work. Clutter Clarity points out that true hoarders aren’t as common as one would think by how often the term is thrown around; it’s more likely that your husband either grew up poor and wants to always be prepared by having the things he may need on hand, or he’s an excessive accumulator who loves possibilities. If the former is the case, try looking up the Minimalists’ 20/20 rule. If the latter is true, Dana K. White is amazing because that’s how her brain works and she found a practical way to work past that. ClutterBug is great for helping people to see that what you may think is clutter is simply your husband’s preferred organizing style. Organizing styles are a combination of either micro or macro organizing preferences (e.g., do you like to throw all the office supplies in one container or have them sorted into smaller categories) and either visual or hidden storage. I hope some of these concepts will help you better understand both yourself and your husband!

I found your video just a few minutes ago and I must say I find your tone incredibly refreshing. I can tell that you're here to help without an interior motive. The way you're speaking is calming and inspiring. I am heading over to subscribe as I finish writing and watching. Thank you for inspiring me ❣️Also, I love the fact that you weave in time for Bible study and family time.

One thing that helped me was a set of safety pins for each child, when they take their socks off they would pin them together, put them in the hamper, then in the wash, and then off to the dresser. all ready matched fast and easy!!! BIG TIME SAVER!!!

ok, on 3/23 got rid of 3 engines (none worked, "oh they can be saved") yea, they can also be recycled. Today, two new tie rod parts for a car I let go 3 years ago.... and I also asked my uncle for a title to a wrecked car he has had since 1965 whcih he gave me in 2010 !! I have done very little to fix it but accumulated parts for the next owner to restore ! I can't wait for it to be gone, so tired of looking at it....the 80% of stuff going was on my mind this morning....

These points really hit home with me. As a teacher, I am too exhausted during the school year to care about messes when I get home, esp. during this pandemic. So, I was looking at summer as my time to purge. I created a to-do list which I thought would help but just overwhelmed me. Now that summer is near over, I'm battling frustration and disappointment in myself over what did NOT get accomplished. I know I need to embrace the "leave no mess behind" style and give myself grace and time. I love how you ended with the motivation aspect. Both of my parents died within a year of each other. The clutter that was left behind for my sisters and me to deal with hasn't been all fun (we did find some wonderful treasures among the clutter). I determined to NOT do that to my children. I also want to have more time for people in my life, not bogged down with managing my stuff. I love the added aspect of time with the Lord. That sounds so peaceful and necessary for my mental and spiritual health. Thank you so much for your words of experience and wisdom!

First time viewer and now new subscriber. I really enjoyed the time with you. TFS. I’ve been decluttering since 2013 after retirement. It’s truly been like peeling away layers. It’s as though I need to adjust to seeing the next layer - previously hidden from me - and then it feels natural to peel another layer. I followed FlyLady’s routines and decluttered in the weekly zones each month. I still do that. I did most of the Marie Kondo method. Seeing all the items of one category together - helped shift my thinking from “but, it’s still usable” to “yes, but how much is enough?”. I like to keep an inventory. About once a year I do a count of the items in our home. I simply go down my list from last year and update it. Now, I’m off to watch the other videos in the playlist. 👍🏻

I am just finishing up the whole house declutter - it wasn't a get rid of a lot, I had done that a few years ago. And, as for family time -- don't you have more time now that you have decluttered? I would explain my LR being full of containers to everyone who came. I find that the system is ongoing. I am very old and so I really do not need chaos - when I grew up a Master BR closet was about 2' wide. We did not own so much and we were much more life oriented. Sharing meals was far more common. Also, what they call tiny homes today and they cost so much were about the size of a family home in 1800 and 1900s. I do not like the term minimalism - I prefer simple, peaceful, or contented to describe the uncluttered life. Stuff can get in the way of spending time with the Lord all the time. Great job if what I can see in this video. It looks like a space that one can live in and think in.

Enjoyed your video. I just cleaned out my home office. Got rid of 3 hefty bags. My rule: only touch each item once. No shuffling...file get rid of. I worked from left to right. Took me 2 weekends. I also use fly lady method for my kitchen. Run dishes in dishwasher at night. No dirty dishes. It helps me stay centered and positive.

My husband and I moved after 7 years in our previous house and I seriously purged a ton of stuff BUT a lot of our clothes ended up in a spare bedroom upstairs. Yesterday I set a timer for 15 minutes and filled 3 garbage bags with clothes that either I didn’t like or didn’t fit. 15 minutes! Now the key is getting that stuff to Goodwill...

I used the time during part of 2020 to de-clutter a few rooms, but the goodwill center was closed .. I had MORE clutter in my livingrm than when I started ! it was piles of items lined up to the door ! of course the other rooms were better off but it stopped me from continuing because I wanted the piles gone before I endeavored further .. eventually they opened and I donated .. watched this vid to help get me going on the last roommmm ..

Hi Mary Beth, Thank you for this video. I related to so much of what you said. A few years ago, I noticed that when I’d sit down in the early morning to do my devotions in my lounge, that I would get so stressed out and distracted by the mess around me. I decided to start a quick night routine which included a quick reset of my lounge and kitchen area before I went to bed. That way, when I came in to have my quiet time, that I felt more relaxed and able to focus on my time with the Lord. Just subscribed! Blessings from Australia ❤️

Detachment from the material, the worldly "things" is the key to growing closer to Christ. It's also incredibly hard to do & so many of us struggle with it. How ridiculous is that when you think of the unimaginable glory of our God we are missing out on because we can't take our eye off of our "stuff!" My main issue is that my brain kicks in while trying to declutter. I literally argue with myself... What if I need it? You haven't worn it in 3 yrs... I know but what if... What if... What if... I need a "whatifectomey!"

Decluttering is one of the best therapies you can go through. It feels so freeing and it clears the negative energy in your house. Magical. Reminder i need to start doing that again now that spring is here. Good time to do this. 👍 I just hate to throw stuff out that can be donated. During the pandemic it was hard to do that because the donation boxes were locked up and Salvation Army was closed.
