How I defeated Amphidinium Dinoflagellates

The recipe that worked for me:
1. Push nitrates to at least 5, phosphates to at least 0.04 by feeding fish multiple times a day
2. Cut lights to 50 or 60% of what they were
3. Increase temperature to 82.6F
4. Try to reduce sand bed height bit-by-bit
5. Sit back, relax, and wait

It works for the strain of dinos I have. - Heat turned up from 80 degrees to 82 degrees over a few hours - Scrub/siphon during mid day full bloom, then a second one right around 9pm - NeoPhos + NeoNitro to boost nutrients: NO3 10ppm PO4 0.15 (previously I had 0 NO3; 0 PO4) - Dosed different beneficial bacteria alternating each night after the cleaning (removed the socks and turn off skimmer overnight) -- Dr. Tim's Wate Away -- MicroBacter Clean -- Vibrant -- Dr. Tim's One & Only -- MicroBacter7 What changed after I implemented this third strategy? - After 24 hours it was clear I had weakened the population, the bloom that day was there but slightly darker brown and seemed to look less snotty less strong - Since then there are no more day blooms - I have mostly observed, but did do a quick vacuum that first night - On day three I did see a little come back so I scrubbed and siphoned - On day four it's visible in some small hard to reach spots in the tank but nothing like before I'm now on day 4 after implementing this strategy and it's clear my battle with dinos is coming to a close.

Sorry to say, but what you are showing at the microscope is not an Amphidinium at all, indeed it is not even a dinoflagellate 😅 (and I know well about this topic 😉) So, please, to reach the right conclusions, first be sure that you have indeed dinos.

Since I made the video, I have found out that you may be right. I believe that the video I took was of ciliates. However, ciliates would not have produced the brown in the light that I eradicated. It was more likely dinoflagellates. Not likely cyanobacteria based on the appearance.

@@thecomicsarereal The one organism you focused in on in the microscope was not a dinoflagellate but those smaller circular organisms zooming around in the background sure look like small cell Amph. dinos. Especially the one in the top left zooming in a tight circle. Very dino-like behavior. I have what I think are large cell right now but may be small cell and they do the same circle dance.

Mark Taber it worked good, I also blacked out my tank for a week. Wasn’t the best for my corals of course. but I don’t have a lot and my fish were fine I have a Dwarf lion and 2 clown fish and couple of hardy corals zoas and torch corals.

Didn’t work for me, dinos still multiplied. I even went to 84 degrees For about a week. I’ve started dosing nitrates and phosphate and it seems to have knocked them back some. They’re not on my rock and corals anymore. Just on sand. My corals fully opened back up too.

@@adrhdz93 Did were you nitrates and phosphates? If they were zero I'm not sure if it should work. He said to push nitrates to at least 5, phosphates to at least 0.04 by feeding fish multiple times a day . So just checking if you did this also. I'm battling this also.

Boss yes, I used tropic Marin plus NP , to raise my phosphate and nitrate to some crazy high levels, after a few days I got a massive cyano bloom and after a few water changes the cyano went away . Now my tank is completely clear of Dino and cyano

Oh I pray you've solved this nightmare! How long have you been plague free and have you returned to normal temps yet?

I've been doing this for over 3 weeks and nothing has returned. I haven't lowered temp back yet. It's still at 82.6 and everything is happy. I've been researching more about reasons to take it back down. Evaporation top-off seems to be steady at almost the same rate. Someone mentioned that longevity of my heater might go down so that's something I'm considering as well.

@@thecomicsarereal may I ask how it's going for you now? I'm 4 days in, but I haven't reduced the lights yet. The dinos are almost 100% gone and I'm battling ostreopsis. Thanks for any update.

@@19801emmanuel Yep! It slowed the growth for sure but didn't solve the issue. Bought a UV sterilizer...hoping that does the trick.

I’ve always ran uv in my tank but still ended up with it since it’s not free floating and sticks to the sand , glass , rocks etc

Has anybody else tried raising their tank temperature and had it work. I've tried everything hydrogen peroxide ,vibrant different bacterias, dr. Tims with 3 day blackout. Microbacter7, bubble scrubbing and UV sterilizer. If this works let us know.

Here in nyc it was very hot about 4 days ago and my dinos bloomed after a month of not getting it. There are so many atuff that contradict eachother when it comes to dinos.

As it's been stated, the organism under your scope is NOT amphidinium, nor any other kind of Dino.

Just for others info. He did have dinos but at 100x magnification that was not what he was looking at. You can see the dinos as the small dots flying around quickly. Seemed like he had 2 types. The one spinning most likely ostreopsis. The ones darting across most likely amphidinium.
